If your custom or purchased tone was visible under Ringtone but disappeared from Text Tone or another alert list after upgrading to iOS 17, you likely encountered an iOS 17.0–17.0.3 bug. Apple documented a fix in iOS 17.1; it was not a confirmed permanent removal of custom tones. Update to the latest iOS version compatible with your iPhone, then check the sound lists again.
What disappeared in early iOS 17?
“Custom tone” can refer to a GarageBand ringtone, a Tone Store purchase, an imported sound, or a tone assigned to one contact. The affected iOS 17 behavior was usually a visibility or classification problem:
- The sound remained in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.
- The same sound was missing from Text Tone or another alert category.
- A tone already assigned to a contact could continue working even though it could not be selected as the general text tone.
Apple’s iOS 17.1 notes say the release “addresses an issue where custom and purchased ringtones may not appear as options for your text tone.” That wording identifies a software issue, not a policy change removing support. See Apple’s iOS 17 update notes. Contemporary reports in the Apple Support Community and a second community thread describe the same ringtone-versus-text-tone pattern, but those are user reports rather than Apple’s technical explanation.
Which iOS versions were affected?

The problem was not universal: an iPhone running iOS 17 did not necessarily lose its tones. Apple’s consolidated notes are at support.apple.com/en-ie/118723.

Fix the problem in the right order
1. Check the installed iOS version
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Read the iOS Version entry.
2. Install the available update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install iOS 17.1 or later if the phone is still on iOS 17.0–17.0.3. On a current device, install the newest version Apple offers for that model.
- Restart the iPhone if the tone lists do not refresh after the update.
Updating is the primary remedy. Restarting alone does not replace Apple’s documented iOS 17.1 fix.
3. Check each sound category separately
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and inspect Ringtone, Text Tone, and any relevant categories such as New Voicemail, New Mail, Sent Mail, Calendar Alerts, Reminder Alerts, or AirDrop. iOS maintains separate lists, so a sound appearing as a ringtone does not guarantee that it appears for every alert type.

Restore purchased tones
If a Tone Store purchase is still absent after updating, use Apple’s redownload option:
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones.
- Tap Tone Store if necessary.
- Look for Download All Purchased Tones and select it.
The option may not be shown when all purchases are already downloaded or when the account has no tone purchases. Sign in with the Apple Account that made the purchase. Apple also notes that some older purchases may not be available for redownload, and Tone Store availability varies by country or region. Details are in Apple’s tones and ringtones guide.

Create a replacement custom tone with GarageBand
GarageBand is Apple’s documented iPhone workflow for making a ringtone or text tone from an eligible audio file or a recording. Exports are limited to 30 seconds.
- Install GarageBand if it is not on the iPhone.
- Touch and hold the GarageBand icon, then tap Create New Audio Recording.
- Open Tracks, then the Loops Browser.
- Import an audio file through Files, or choose a downloaded, unprotected song from the Apple Music library.
- Trim or arrange the audio to 30 seconds or less.
- Return to My Songs and select the project.
- Tap Share > Ringtone.
- Name the tone and tap Export.
- Choose Use sound as and select Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone, Assign to contact, or Done.
GarageBand offers to shorten an export longer than 30 seconds, or you can trim it yourself. Protected or unavailable Apple Music subscription tracks cannot be used as source audio. Follow Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions and GarageBand sharing guide.

Assign a tone to one contact
To set a ringtone or text tone for an individual:
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone or Text Tone.
- Choose the sound and save the contact.
If a tone works for one contact but is missing from the global Text Tone list, do not overwrite that contact assignment before updating and testing. Check both Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone and Contacts > person > Edit > Text Tone. Reports of contact-specific tones surviving the visibility problem come from users, not an Apple guarantee.
If tones are still missing after the update
- Confirm the category: check Ringtone and Text Tone independently; a ringtone is not automatically valid for every alert.
- Check the Apple Account: purchased tones belong to the account used to buy them.
- Redownload after migration: an iPhone restored from backup or transferred from another device may need the purchased-tone download option.
- Test a new GarageBand export: this separates a system-list problem from an unavailable purchase or incompatible source file.
- Check notification conditions: Silent mode, low volume, Focus, and an app’s own notification settings can suppress sounds even when the tone is correctly selected.
- Check third-party apps separately: many apps use their own notification-sound controls and may not offer iOS system tones.
Do not modify internal iPhone files, plist entries, or system folders. Those unsupported methods are unnecessary once the iOS fix is installed and can make future updates or restores less reliable. If a tone remains absent after updating, verifying the correct account, and attempting a permitted redownload, contact Apple Support with the iPhone model, iOS version, and purchase details.

What this bug did not mean
- It did not prove that Apple permanently removed custom text tones.
- It did not mean every custom tone had been deleted; many remained under Ringtone or continued working for a contact.
- A Tone Store purchase is different from an Apple Music subscription track.
- GarageBand cannot bypass digital-rights restrictions on protected music.
- A tone exported successfully still requires explicit assignment as the standard tone or to a contact.
The Bottom Line
For the iOS 17.0–17.0.3 missing-tone problem, update first: Apple addressed the ringtone-to-text-tone visibility bug in iOS 17.1. Redownload eligible purchases through Tone Store, and use GarageBand when you need to create a new ringtone or text tone.
