A cursor that flickers while you type in Microsoft Word is more than a cosmetic annoyance. It can make text hard to read, slow you down, and in some cases trigger selection issues or apparent “typing lag.”
In 2024, most flickering reports trace back to display rendering (hardware acceleration/high-DPI scaling), a conflicting add-in, or a Word setting that forces redraws at the wrong time. This guide walks through the fastest fixes first, then deeper isolation steps.

What cursor flickering in MS Word looks like (and why it matters)
Typical symptoms include the caret (text cursor) blinking rapidly or “jumping,” the insertion point disappearing momentarily, or the page repainting as you move the mouse or type. Some users also report flicker that appears only when:

- Tracking changes is enabled
- Comment balloons or field updates are active
- You resize the Word window or switch monitors
- Using high refresh rate displays (120–240 Hz) or a high-DPI scaling setting
Because the caret is redrawn by the rendering pipeline, anything that changes how Word paints the document—graphics acceleration, DPI scaling, or add-ins that hook into the editor—can cause flicker.
Quick checks before changing settings
Start here. These steps often fix flicker without touching deeper settings.
- Restart Word and reboot the PC: A clean restart can clear a stuck GPU/driver state.
- Try a new blank document: If a blank doc is stable, the issue may be file formatting or field content.
- Test with another user profile (Windows): If the flicker disappears, a personalization/accessibility setting is likely involved.
- Disable VPN/remote desktop temporarily: Remote graphics rendering can alter caret redraw timing.
If flicker persists, move on to the targeted fixes below.

Most cursor flicker in Word comes from a small set of causes.
| Likely cause | What you’ll notice | Most effective fix |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics hardware acceleration | Flicker changes with window resize, monitor switch, or GPU driver changes | Turn off hardware graphics acceleration in Word |
| High-DPI scaling mismatch | Flicker appears mainly on 125–200% scaling or external monitors | Adjust Windows scaling to a single value; tweak Word DPI settings |
| Conflicting add-ins | Flicker starts after installing a tool (PDF tools, reference managers, Grammarly-like add-ins) | Disable COM add-ins and restart Word |
| Microsoft Editor / accessibility settings | Cursor flicker correlates with spell-check, proofing, or caret visibility aids | Adjust proofing/accessibility and disable live features |
| Corrupt Word registry settings | Flicker survives reinstalls, only on one machine/account | Reset Word settings and repair Office |
Fixes for Windows (Word for Microsoft 365 / Office 2024)
These are the highest-probability fixes first. The order matters: graphics acceleration and add-ins commonly solve the problem fastest.
1) Turn off hardware graphics acceleration in Word
This is the most common fix when the caret redraws incorrectly due to GPU/driver behavior.
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Scroll to Display.
- Check Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
- Click OK and fully restart Word.
If flicker stops, you’ve confirmed a rendering/GPU interaction. If it returns after updates, re-verify the setting.

- Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)
- Right-click the desktop > Display settings.
- Under Scale & layout, set Scale to a consistent value on both monitors (commonly 100%, 125%, or 150%).
- For external monitors, avoid mixing 100% on one and 175–200% on the other.
- Sign out/in if your system requires a full refresh for scaling changes to apply cleanly.
After changing scaling, restart Word and test in a blank document.
3) Disable “Show animations” (reduces redraw stress)
It’s a small change, but on some systems it reduces UI repaint jitter.
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Go to Visual effects (wording varies by Windows build).
- Turn off Show animations in Windows and similar animation toggles.
- Restart Word.
4) Test with hardware cursor / mouse software disabled (if applicable)
If you use mouse/keyboard utilities, screen overlays, or cursor enhancers, they can interfere with redraw timing.
- Close Word.
- Temporarily exit overlay tools (RGB controllers, cursor/overlay utilities, screen recorders).
- Reopen Word and test.
If flicker stops, re-enable tools one by one to find the culprit.
5) Disable add-ins that hook into the editor
Add-ins can force content refreshes while Word is composing the caret line.
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Uncheck all non-Microsoft add-ins.
- Click OK and restart Word.
If the issue disappears, enable add-ins one at a time to isolate the trigger.
Fixes for macOS (Word on Mac)
Word on macOS has a different settings surface, but the same root issues apply: rendering, accessibility, and add-ins.
1) Update Word and macOS
On Mac, caret flicker often gets fixed via Microsoft’s build updates or system graphics changes.

- Restart the Mac and test.
2) Disable problematic add-ins
- Open Word > Settings/Preferences.
- Find Add-ins (or Manage equivalent).
- Turn off third-party add-ins and restart Word.
If flicker returns when you enable a specific add-in, you’ve found the conflict.
3) Reduce accessibility and live features
Caret-related accessibility options can increase redraw frequency.
- Open System Settings > Accessibility.
- Temporarily disable high-contrast settings, cursor enhancements, or any live cursor/pointer features.
- Restart Word and test typing.
Fixes that target hardware and display issues
If the flicker correlates with monitor changes, refresh rate, or GPU drivers, follow these targeted actions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAdjust GPU driver and refresh rate
On Windows, outdated or newly updated GPU drivers can cause rendering glitches in Office apps.
- Update to the latest stable NVIDIA/AMD/Intel driver from the vendor website, then reboot.
- If the flicker started right after a driver update, consider rolling back one version.
- In Display settings, try lowering refresh rate temporarily (for example from 165/240 Hz to 120 Hz) and test in Word.
Word isn’t the only app affected when drivers are the problem, so check if other Office apps (Excel/PowerPoint) flicker too.
Disable overlays and screen recorders
Overlays (FPS counters, streaming capture, some remote-control tools) can hook into rendering layers.
- Close Word.
- Turn off overlays in apps like GeForce Experience/AMD Adrenalin/OBS overlays (if used).
- Reopen Word and type for 30–60 seconds.
Check printer driver and “hardware graphics” effects
Some printer drivers can cause extra redraws when Word calculates pagination and fields.

- Try printing to Microsoft Print to PDF (temporarily) and see if flicker changes.
- If you’ve recently installed a new printer driver, roll it back or test with another default printer.
Disable add-ins and isolate the trigger
If you only see flicker after installing or enabling a tool, add-ins are the most likely cause.

Disable COM add-ins (Windows)
- Open File > Options.
- Choose Add-ins.
- Next to Manage, select COM Add-ins > Go.
- Uncheck add-ins one batch at a time (start with all third-party ones).
- Restart Word and test typing.
Disable Word add-ins (web/Store style)
Depending on your Word build, you may also have store-based or web add-ins that appear in the add-in manager. Turn them off temporarily, then restart Word.
Isolate by using Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Word with add-ins disabled, which helps confirm whether the flicker is caused by extensions.
- Press Win + R.
- Type
winword /safeand press Enter. - Test cursor behavior in Safe Mode.
If flicker stops in Safe Mode, it’s almost certainly an add-in (or a corrupted Word profile setting).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Resetting can fix corrupt UI state without deleting your documents.
Reset the Word registry settings
On Windows, you can reset Word’s settings via a registry switch Word provides.
- Close Word.
- Press Win + R.
- Run:
winword /r
This repaints/reinitializes certain components. If you need a deeper reset:
- Search the Start menu for Run (or press Win + R).
- Create a new blank Word profile (advanced method) only if you’re comfortable with profile changes, since it can change personalization and templates.
If you want the safest option, use Safe Mode + add-in isolation first, then repair Office.
Repair Office and update Word
When flicker persists across machines, the install or component files can be the problem.

Update Word first
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- Restart Word and test.
Quick Repair vs Online Repair (Windows)
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office (the exact listing varies).

- If it doesn’t help, choose Online Repair and restart again.
Online Repair is heavier (it downloads components), but it’s the one that most reliably fixes deep component corruption.
Troubleshooting flow when the main fix doesn’t work
Use this decision path so you don’t waste time repeating steps.
- Does flicker stop in Safe Mode? If yes, go straight to Add-in isolation.
- After disabling hardware acceleration, does flicker improve? If yes, you can keep it off; then check GPU driver stability.
- Is it only happening on one monitor? If yes, match scaling values and try moving Word to the primary monitor.
- Is it only one document? If yes, try pasting content into a new blank doc to rule out corrupted formatting/fields.
- Does it also affect Excel or PowerPoint? If yes, it’s more likely system graphics/driver related—update/roll back drivers and check overlays.
If none of these change anything, it’s worth capturing your Word version (File > Account) and the OS build, then comparing to Microsoft known-issues for your specific release.

Comparison: what to try first on high-DPI displays
High-DPI setups are a common trigger. Here’s what tends to work fastest depending on your environment.
| Your setup | First try | Second try |
|---|---|---|
| Dual monitors with different scaling (example: 100% + 150%) | Match scaling across monitors | Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Word |
| Single 4K monitor at 200% scaling | Disable hardware graphics acceleration | Lower refresh rate temporarily (120 Hz test) |
| Recent GPU driver update | Disable hardware graphics acceleration | Roll back GPU driver one version |
| Flicker starts after adding a tool/add-in | Disable COM add-ins | Test in Safe Mode |
FAQs
Why does my Word cursor flicker only when I scroll?
Scrolling forces more repaints of the document canvas. This usually points to graphics acceleration or overlay/driver interference. Disable hardware graphics acceleration and test again.
Does turning off hardware acceleration reduce performance?
Usually not in noticeable ways for typical document editing. If you work with very large documents, you may see slightly different rendering behavior, but it’s often still preferable to flicker.
Will add-in fixes affect my templates and macros?
Disabling COM add-ins typically doesn’t remove your templates or macros. It just prevents those extensions from loading until you re-enable them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How can I tell whether it’s my document formatting or Word itself?
Test a blank document and then paste a small block of text from the problematic document into the blank file. If the blank stays stable, the trigger is likely document content (fields, complex formatting, or corrupted sections).
What if I’m on a company-managed PC with limited admin rights?
Start with changes inside Word (hardware acceleration and add-in toggles) because they don’t require admin permissions. If you must update/repair Office, request help from IT.
Bottom Line
For most people, cursor flickering in MS Word in 2024 is fixed by turning off hardware graphics acceleration, then disabling COM add-ins and aligning display scaling (especially on multi-monitor, high-DPI setups). Use Safe Mode to confirm whether an add-in is the culprit.
If the issue still persists after those steps, update Office, then run Quick Repair or Online Repair. Once it stops, keep an eye on GPU driver updates and add-in installs, since both frequently reintroduce the same rendering conflict.
