Choose CT-GenAI v1.1 if you want to use generative AI and large language models to support software testing work. Both require the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL); they address different jobs rather than offering interchangeable credentials.
What is the difference between CT-AI and CT-GenAI?
The distinction is whether AI is the system under test or a tool in your testing process. CT-AI focuses on evaluating AI-based systems; CT-GenAI focuses on applying generative AI to testing activities across the software lifecycle. CT-AI also covers testing generative AI systems, but that does not make it a course on using an LLM to draft or improve ordinary testing work.

Which certification fits your role?
Choose CT-AI if you validate an AI system
CT-AI is the more direct match for an AI/ML product tester, data professional, or test engineer checking an AI system’s behavior. Its scope includes input data, models, machine-learning development testing, AI-specific quality characteristics, and testing generative AI systems. See the CT-AI syllabus for the detailed learning objectives.
#1 Best Overall
Choose CT-GenAI if you want AI to help you test
CT-GenAI suits testers and automation engineers who want to apply LLMs to tasks such as requirements analysis, test design, automation, and reporting. Its syllabus emphasizes prompt engineering, evaluating outputs, risk, integration into testing work, and adoption. Consult the CT-GenAI syllabus to check whether its objectives match your intended use.
If your job involves both
Start with the syllabus whose learning objectives match your immediate project responsibilities. The credentials cover adjacent but distinct work: CT-AI’s coverage of GenAI concerns testing those systems, while CT-GenAI concerns using generative AI in the testing process.
What are the exam requirements?
Both certifications require CTFL. The exams each have 40 questions and last 60 minutes. CT-AI v2.0 requires 29 points out of 44 to pass; CT-GenAI requires 30 out of 46. ISTQB lists 25% extra time for candidates taking the exam in a non-native language. Confirm the applicable arrangements with your exam provider when booking.
Which versions are current?
CT-AI: v2.0
CT-AI v2.0 is the current version and replaces v1.0. ISTQB says v1.0 exams remain available in English through April 21, 2027, and in non-English versions through October 21, 2027. Existing v1.0 certificates remain valid; an upgrade is not mandatory. Check the current CT-AI certification page before booking to confirm which syllabus version your course or exam uses.

CT-GenAI: v1.1
CT-GenAI is currently at syllabus v1.1. ISTQB describes this as a minor update that does not change the syllabus structure, learning objectives, or overall scope. Check the CT-GenAI certification page and your provider’s materials for the version you intend to take.
How should you prepare?
- Confirm your target version. Use the current syllabus for the certification and version you plan to sit.
- Study the syllabus learning objectives. Use them to identify what you need to understand, rather than relying on a course description alone.
- Try the official sample exam. It can help you become familiar with the question style and identify topics to revisit.
- Decide whether you need a course. ISTQB recommends accredited training for CT-AI, and accredited providers offer CT-GenAI courses; both pages also support self-study with the syllabus and sample exam. A course is not stated as compulsory.
Neither course attendance nor practice with a sample exam guarantees a pass. Check local providers for current course and exam availability.

What these certifications do not establish
ISTQB’s certification pages do not establish comparative salary gains, job-placement outcomes, pass rates, or employer recognition that would show one credential has greater labor-market value. Exam prices and provider availability also vary by location. Check local exam options and any requirements set by your employer before choosing.
