Choose Miller to transform records by field name, chain operations, or work across CSV, TSV and JSON-family formats. The available documentation does not support a reliable feature-by-feature comparison with the separate xlsx2csv utility, so verify that project’s own documentation before choosing it for a workbook workflow.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best fit | Documented strengths | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| csvkit | Shell pipelines built from focused commands, including documented Excel-to-CSV conversion | CSV selection, filtering, conversion, SQL, database import and summaries | Defaults include format sniffing and type inference; the project warns that larger or speed-sensitive workloads may reach its limits. |
| Miller | Field-name-based record transformations and chained operations | CSV, TSV, JSON, JSON Lines and other formats; most operations are documented as streaming | Some operations, including sorting, need to retain more data. Streaming does not establish that Miller is always faster. |
| xlsx2csv | A possible fit when the specific task is converting workbook data to CSV | Not established by the sources available for this comparison | Check the utility’s own current documentation for supported workbooks, sheet selection, formula and date handling, and workbook-feature behavior. |
When csvkit is the right choice
csvkit is a suite of command-line utilities for input, processing, output and analysis, not merely an Excel converter. Its documentation covers commands for selecting columns, matching rows, converting formats, querying data with SQL, importing into databases and calculating summaries.
Excel-to-CSV conversion
The in2csv documentation explicitly lists XLS and XLSX among its supported input formats. That makes csvkit a documented choice when you need to extract spreadsheet data as CSV and may then want to inspect, filter or analyze it with related commands. Do not assume that the separate xlsx2csv program has the same options or workbook behavior.
Focused commands in shell pipelines
Use csvkit when you prefer a sequence of small commands, each handling one task. For example, csvcut selects or reorders columns, csvgrep matches rows, csvjson converts CSV to JSON, csvstat summarizes data and csvsql supports SQL queries or database import. The suite’s breadth is useful when a workflow moves from conversion to cleanup and analysis.
#1 Best Overall
Watch the defaults
csvkit documents format sniffing based on the first 1,024 bytes and type inference that may interpret text as numbers, dates or booleans. The project acknowledges these defaults can occasionally cause errors. If automatic detection or conversion is changing how your input is read, its documentation shows --snifflimit 0 to disable sniffing and --no-inference to disable type inference. Check the output against the source data when those distinctions matter.
For installation, the official tutorial recommends using a Python virtual environment and documents pip install csvkit. It also lists brew install csvkit; that option is not specific to Linux.
When Miller is the right choice
Miller suits workflows where the field names matter more than a sequence of separate utility names. Its introduction describes a tool for querying, shaping and reformatting data. You can chain verbs such as cut, sort, head and put with then, and use expressions to create computed fields.
One tool across several text formats
Miller documents support for CSV, TSV, JSON, JSON Lines, YAML and DCF. Its CSV handling follows RFC-4180-style quoting, and CSV-lite is available for less-standard delimited data. That makes Miller a natural option when a transformation needs to move among named-field records or multiple text formats, rather than start with workbook conversion.
Streaming, with operation-specific limits
The Miller project README says most operations process one record at a time, but some require deeper retention; sorting is an explicit example. Treat this as a design distinction, not a comparative speed guarantee. Actual runtime and memory use depend on the data and operation, so test the workload you intend to run.
Linux installation options
Miller’s README lists Linux package-manager commands for yum, apt-get and snap, and also documents downloading or compiling a Go binary with no runtime dependencies. Choose the method that fits your distribution and package-management preferences.
Rank #4
What to verify before choosing xlsx2csv
The separate xlsx2csv utility cannot be fairly ranked here: the official documentation needed to establish its specific behavior was not available among the sources for this comparison. csvkit’s documented in2csv support is not evidence for xlsx2csv’s capabilities. Before relying on xlsx2csv, consult its own project or package documentation and confirm:
- Which workbook formats it accepts and how it chooses a worksheet.
- How it handles formulas and stored or formatted dates.
- What happens to workbook features that CSV cannot represent.
- Whether its current version supports your Linux distribution and is maintained.
CSV is a flat tabular format, so a conversion workflow should be checked for the specific sheet and values you need; do not assume that conversion preserves workbook structure or presentation.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Pick by the job, not by an assumed speed ranking
- Choose csvkit if you need documented XLS/XLSX input through
in2csvor want focused tools for CSV cleanup, SQL and summaries. - Choose Miller if you want to address records by field name, chain transformations, or work across delimited and JSON-family text data.
- Evaluate xlsx2csv separately if that exact utility is your preference; confirm its own workbook behavior rather than borrowing claims from csvkit.
- Benchmark your real workflow if file size or runtime is decisive. csvkit warns that larger or speed-sensitive use may reach its limits, while Miller’s streaming description applies to most—not all—operations. Neither statement is an independent comparative benchmark.
