Use padding for space inside an element’s border, margin for space outside an individual element, and gap for gutters owned by a grid, flex, or multi-column container. These properties occupy different places in the layout, so the right choice depends on what owns the space.
The box model: where each kind of space goes
Read an element’s box from the inside out: content, padding, border, then margin. Padding separates content from the border; margin separates the border box from surrounding content. A background on an element extends through its padding area, but not through its margin.
box-sizing determines what a declared width or height measures. With content-box, the declared dimensions apply to the content, and padding and border are added outside those dimensions. With border-box, the declared dimensions include the padding and border. Margin remains outside the border in either model.

When to use padding, margin, or gap
Use padding for internal breathing room
Choose padding when content needs separation from its component’s edge—for example, text inside a card. Because the background extends through padding, this is also the way to create colored space inside the border.

Use margin for space belonging to one element
Choose margin when an individual element needs room outside its border. It is useful when the spacing behavior belongs to that element rather than to a group of siblings. Remember that vertical margins in block flow can collapse, so two margins may not add together as expected.
Use gap for a layout’s gutters
Choose gap when a grid, flex, or multi-column container should set spacing between its items. A single value sets both row and column gaps; two values set row gap first and column gap second:

}Gap sets spacing between items without adding that gutter at the container’s outer edges. It can coexist with padding on the container and padding or margin on its children: each property serves a different spacing relationship.
Why vertical margins sometimes do not add up
In block layout, adjoining vertical margins can collapse into one margin rather than combine arithmetically. When both adjoining margins are positive, the resulting margin is generally the larger one, not their sum. Collapse can occur between adjacent siblings and between certain parent and descendant margins.

Margins do not collapse inside flex or grid containers. Floated and absolutely positioned elements are among the exceptions to the general collapsing behavior, so it is not accurate to assume that all margins collapse. When you need a deliberate gutter between flex or grid items, container-level gap avoids block-margin collapsing.
Why the visible space can exceed the gap value
The declared gap is only one contributor to visible separation. Margins on the items, padding, and distributed alignment can add distance; grid alignment can also create extra separation between tracks. If a layout looks wider-spaced than expected, inspect those values as well as the gap itself.

Debug spacing in browser developer tools
- Select the element that appears misplaced in your browser’s developer tools and inspect its box model. The diagram can show its content size, padding, border, and margin.
- Check the parent’s layout mode—block, flex, grid, or multi-column—and its alignment settings. Confirm whether a gap is contributing to the space.
- Inspect the child’s margins and the parent’s and child’s padding. Look for multiple spacing rules contributing to the visible distance.
- Check
box-sizingbefore changing a width or height. Padding and border affect measured dimensions differently undercontent-boxandborder-box. - Change the property that owns the unwanted space, then recheck the result. Avoid adjusting several spacing values at once; that makes the source of the difference harder to identify.
