In Java, use jsoup’s select() method to find HTML elements with a CSS selector string—for example, doc.select("a[href]") returns links that have an href attribute. CSS itself does not define a select() function: in browser JavaScript, the corresponding DOM methods are querySelector() and querySelectorAll().
Use select() in jsoup
jsoup parses HTML into a document tree. Call select() on a Document, an Element, or an Elements collection, passing a CSS selector as a string. The result is an Elements collection, which may contain zero, one, or many matches.
import org.jsoup.Jsoup;
import org.jsoup.nodes.Document;
import org.jsoup.select.Elements;
public class SelectExample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String html = "<article>"
+ "<p class='notice'>Read this</p>"
+ "<a href='/guide'>Guide</a>"
+ "</article>";
Document doc = Jsoup.parse(html);
Elements notices = doc.select("p.notice");
Elements links = doc.select("a[href]");
for (var link : links) {
System.out.println(link.text() + " -> " + link.attr("href"));
}
}
}
This example requires jsoup on the Java classpath. The selector examples below follow the jsoup selector documentation; consult the documentation for the jsoup version used by your project when you need to confirm support for a particular selector.
Select from a narrower scope
Calling select() on the document searches within that document. Calling it on an Element scopes the search to that element’s descendants, which is useful when you have already found a section and want matches inside it. You can also call it on an Elements collection to select within those elements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Element article = doc.select("article").first();
if (article != null) {
Elements articleLinks = article.select("a[href]");
}
first() can return null when there is no match, so check before calling methods on the result.
Choose a selector that describes the target
| What to match | Selector | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Element type | p |
Paragraph elements |
| Class | .notice |
Elements with the notice class |
| ID | #main |
The element with the main ID |
| Attribute present | a[href] |
Anchor elements with an href attribute |
| Attribute value suffix | img[src$=.png] |
Images whose src value ends in .png |
| Descendant | article p |
Paragraph descendants anywhere inside an article |
| Direct child | h3 > div |
div elements that are direct children of an h3 |
| Alternatives | p.warning, p.note |
Paragraphs matching either selector |
Use a space when any descendant depth is acceptable, and > when the relationship must be direct. A selector list separated by commas groups alternatives. These selector forms are also used in stylesheets, but in jsoup they are supplied as a method argument rather than followed by a CSS declaration block.

Read and refine the matches
The selected elements are not just text strings: each match is an element you can inspect, extract attributes from, or use as the starting point for another selection.
Elements resultDivs = doc.select("h3 > div");
Elements resultLinks = resultDivs.select("a[href]");
for (var link : resultLinks) {
System.out.println(link.text());
System.out.println(link.attr("href"));
}
For one expected match, take the first result and handle the possibility that the collection is empty. For multiple expected matches, iterate over the returned collection rather than assuming there is only one.

How this differs from browser JavaScript
In browser code, use DOM methods—not jsoup’s Java select(). MDN documents querySelector() for the first matching descendant and querySelectorAll() for all matching descendants. The latter returns a static NodeList. Both methods search descendants and do not include the node on which the method is called.
const firstWarning = document.querySelector("p.warning");
const allWarnings = document.querySelectorAll("p.warning");
So the practical distinction is the environment and return value: jsoup selection runs on parsed HTML in Java and returns Elements; browser selection runs against the DOM in JavaScript and returns one element or a NodeList. MDN notes that an invalid selector string passed to querySelector() raises a SyntaxError.

Common problems and fixes
- No matches: Check spelling, punctuation, class and ID values, and whether the target is actually present in the parsed HTML. Try a broad selector such as
articlefirst, then narrow it. - Unexpected descendants: A space matches at any descendant depth. Use
>if you specifically need a direct child. - Only the first match is handled: A selection can contain multiple elements. Iterate over it, or deliberately take the first result and account for the no-match case.
- Selector errors: Keep the selector syntactically valid and test it in small pieces. In browser JavaScript, MDN explicitly documents a
SyntaxErrorfor an invalid selector passed toquerySelector(); do not assume error behavior is identical across libraries.

If what you need is a screenshot of a page rather than parsed elements, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a CSS selector library. One GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, the cURL request below saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
