The easiest place to start is @property, which adds a declared type, inheritance rule, and initial value to a custom property. Paint Worklets can do more, but support varies by API: check the exact browsers and devices you need to serve before relying on any Houdini feature.
What CSS Houdini is—and is not
Houdini is an umbrella name for APIs that let developers extend or interact with parts of the browser’s CSS engine. Some APIs expose configurable behavior to CSS through worklets; others provide structured ways to register or manipulate CSS values. It is not one feature, and it does not let authors add arbitrary CSS syntax in every browser. The MDN overview of Houdini APIs describes the distinct areas and their status.

The practical distinction is between features you can use in ordinary stylesheets today, such as registered custom properties, and APIs that remain limited or experimental in browser support. A proposal or draft describes work in progress; it is not proof that browsers ship an interoperable implementation.

Start with a typed custom property using @property
Unregistered CSS custom properties hold token sequences. Registering one declares how the browser should parse it, whether it inherits, and what value it has initially. This does not create a new built-in CSS property; it defines behavior for an author-named custom property.

@property --progress {
syntax: "<number>";
inherits: false;
initial-value: 0;
}
.progress-ring {
--progress: 0.65;
}
Here, --progress is declared as a number, does not inherit, and defaults to zero. The MDN guide to the Properties and Values API explains registration and its descriptors. MDN marks this API Baseline 2024, newly available across the latest devices and browser versions since July 2024; older browsers and devices may still lack support. See the API reference and verify your own support requirements.
Register from JavaScript when setup belongs in code
The same API provides CSS.registerProperty(). Use it when registration naturally belongs to script initialization rather than a stylesheet:
CSS.registerProperty({
name: "--progress",
syntax: "<number>",
inherits: false,
initialValue: 0
});
The registration describes the same essential fields: name, syntax, inheritance, and initial value. Prefer the stylesheet form when the rule belongs with your CSS; use JavaScript registration when your setup is already script-driven. The MDN API reference documents the JavaScript interface.

Generate CSS images with a Paint Worklet
The CSS Painting API lets a Paint Worklet produce an image value that CSS can use with paint(name), often as a background. A page loads the module with CSS.paintWorklet.addModule(); the module registers a painter whose paint method receives the output dimensions and can read declared CSS properties. See MDN’s CSS Painting API, its paint() reference, and the W3C CSS Painting API Level 1.
Minimal configurable stripe example
Save the following as stripe-painter.js:
class StripePainter {
static get inputProperties() {
return ["--stripe-color"];
}
paint(ctx, size, styleMap) {
const value = styleMap.get("--stripe-color");
const color = value ? value.toString() : "#c44";
ctx.fillStyle = color;
ctx.fillRect(0, 0, size.width, size.height);
ctx.strokeStyle = "rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.65)";
ctx.lineWidth = 4;
for (let x = -size.height; x < size.width; x += 18) {
ctx.beginPath();
ctx.moveTo(x, 0);
ctx.lineTo(x + size.height, size.height);
ctx.stroke();
}
}
}
registerPaint("stripes", StripePainter);
Load it from page JavaScript and apply the generated image in CSS:
if ("paintWorklet" in CSS) {
CSS.paintWorklet.addModule("stripe-painter.js");
}
.card {
--stripe-color: #245a9b;
background-color: #245a9b;
background-image: paint(stripes);
}
@supports (background-image: paint(stripes)) {
.card {
background-image: paint(stripes);
}
}
The solid background-color remains a basic fallback if the generated image is unavailable. The module should be served from an allowed, reachable URL; loading is asynchronous, so a first render can occur before it is ready. Keep essential information and functionality outside the generated effect. This API is not Baseline according to MDN, so consult its compatibility information and test the exact browser set. This example illustrates the API; it is not a performance benchmark or a claim that worklets outperform ordinary CSS.

Use Typed OM for structured CSS values
The CSS Typed Object Model represents CSS values as typed JavaScript objects rather than only strings. Interfaces such as CSSUnitValue keep a number and unit distinct, while style maps provide structured access to declarations or computed styles. This can simplify value manipulation in cases where code would otherwise concatenate or parse strings. Read the MDN Typed OM reference and its guide for the available interfaces and usage.
Typed OM is marked limited availability and not Baseline by MDN. Confirm support for your target browsers before making it a dependency, and retain an alternative such as ordinary style strings where required.
How the Houdini APIs differ
| API area | What it does | Practical status |
|---|---|---|
| Properties and Values | Registers custom property syntax, inheritance, and initial values through @property or CSS.registerProperty(). |
Best first example; MDN marks it Baseline 2024, while older browsers and devices may not support it. |
| CSS Painting | Uses Paint Worklets to create image values available through paint(). |
Limited availability; use only with support checks and a fallback. |
| CSS Typed OM | Exposes CSS values as typed JavaScript objects. | Limited availability; check compatibility before depending on it. |
| CSS Layout API | Describes author-defined layout algorithms. | Work in progress, not a general-purpose production feature. The W3C document says, “It is inappropriate to cite this document as other than work in progress.” |
| CSS Parser API | Would expose CSS parsing concepts. | MDN describes it as a proposal with no browser implementation in its overview. |
| Font Metrics API | Would expose font metrics and layout information. | MDN describes it as a proposal with no browser implementation in its overview. |
Choose an API by the problem, not by the Houdini label
- Use registered custom properties when CSS needs a declared type and explicit inheritance or initial-value behavior.
- Use a Paint Worklet when a generated image needs to respond to element dimensions or CSS inputs, and the effect can degrade gracefully.
- Consider Typed OM when JavaScript needs structured CSS values and the supported-browser set is suitable.
- Do not build a production layout or parser dependency around a draft or proposal without verifying that a usable implementation exists in every target environment.
- Before reaching for any Houdini API, check whether standard CSS already solves the need with lower implementation and fallback costs.
The cited documentation establishes what these APIs are for and their support caveats; it does not establish a universal speed ranking. Performance depends on the specific implementation and page, so profile the actual experience rather than assuming an API is faster.

Check support and plan a fallback
- Identify the exact API you want to use; “Houdini support” is not one browser capability.
- Check that API’s compatibility table in MDN, including the Baseline compatibility glossary where relevant.
- Test the actual browser, version, device, and webview set your project must serve, including older supported environments.
- For optional Paint Worklet effects, provide an ordinary CSS background or static image that remains acceptable without the worklet.
- Keep essential content and controls usable if the enhancement is absent, delayed, or fails to load.
- Recheck support before release because browser compatibility changes over time.
Baseline is a cross-browser availability summary, not a guarantee for every older device or a replacement for testing usability, accessibility, performance, or security in your own implementation.

A registered property does not behave as expected
- Check that the registered name begins with
--, and that the syntax and assigned value match. For example, a property registered as<number>should not be assigned a percentage string. - Confirm that the declaration is being loaded and that
inheritsandinitial-valuereflect the intended behavior. - Check support in the browser where the issue occurs; registration is broadly available in current browsers but not guaranteed on older devices.
The Paint Worklet background is missing
- Confirm that the browser exposes
CSS.paintWorkletand supports the CSSpaint()image value. - Check the browser console and network panel for a failed module load, an incorrect module path, or a script error before
registerPaint()runs. - Ensure the registered painter name in
paint(stripes)exactly matches the name passed toregisterPaint("stripes", ...). - Keep the fallback background in place; do not treat a missing generated image as a reason to hide content.
Typed OM code fails in one browser
Typed OM remains limited availability. Check the relevant interface and method support in the target browser, and provide a conventional CSS string-based path for environments that lack it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does CSS Houdini mean browsers let me invent any CSS property?
No. Houdini APIs expose specific CSS-engine capabilities; registered custom properties add declared behavior to author-named variables, not arbitrary new built-in properties or syntax.
Does a Paint Worklet replace a background image?
It produces an image value for CSS where supported, but it should be treated as an optional enhancement with an ordinary CSS or image fallback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre the CSS Layout and Parser APIs ready for production use?
The Layout API document is work in progress, and MDN describes the Parser API as a proposal without browser implementation. They are not general-purpose production tools.
