Counter-Strike 2 uses 64 server snapshots per second. That is the game’s documented server cadence: once every 15.625 milliseconds. Its subtick system records the precise time an input occurs between snapshots, so shots, movement starts and grenade throws are timestamped instead of being rounded to the next fixed tick boundary.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Counter-Strike 2 servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
That design does not turn official matchmaking into a 128-tick service. The server owns simulation speed and snapshot delivery; client commands such as cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate can request or buffer network updates, but they cannot raise the server’s ceiling. When play feels inconsistent, use CS2’s Source 2 telemetry to separate missed ticks, jitter, packet loss and choke from local frame-time problems.

Tickrate is the number of simulation updates a game server performs each second. In CS2, Steam Support documents a rate of 64 ticks per second, with one server tick lasting 15.625 milliseconds (1,000 ÷ 64). At each tick, the server advances the game state and sends a snapshot that clients can use to update their view.
The server’s cadence is different from your monitor’s refresh rate and your computer’s frame rate. FPS describes how often your local machine renders frames. Tickrate describes how often the server simulates the match and produces snapshots. A system rendering at 300 FPS still receives a 64-snapshot-per-second server stream in official matchmaking. Conversely, a 64-Hz monitor does not force a server to run at 64 Hz.

Three rates players often confuse
| Term | What it measures | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| FPS | Local rendered frames per second | Input feel, animation smoothness and frame-time consistency on your PC |
| Server tickrate | Simulation and snapshot updates per second | How frequently the server advances the shared match state |
| Latency (ping) | Round-trip network delay, usually in milliseconds | How long packets take to travel between your client and the server |
Improving one does not automatically improve the others. Higher FPS can reduce local input-to-display delay, but it cannot create extra server snapshots. A low ping does not guarantee clean delivery if packets arrive unevenly, and a fast connection can still suffer from congestion or CPU saturation.
Is CS2 really 64 tick?
Yes, for the server snapshot cadence documented by Steam Support. CS2 sends game-state snapshots once per tick and uses 64 ticks per second. This is the correct answer to “What tickrate is CS2?” when discussing the underlying official server simulation.

The important qualification is that CS2 adds subtick event timing on top of that 64-snapshot cadence. Subtick does not replace the 64-Hz server loop with an unlimited-rate simulation, and it does not mean every part of the game is evaluated 128 or 256 times per second.
How subtick changes event timing
Valve’s published explainer, “Counter-Strike 2: Moving Beyond Tick Rate” (March 22, 2023), calls subtick updates “the heart of Counter-Strike 2.” Under a traditional fixed-tick model, the server evaluates inputs at discrete boundaries. If a shot or movement command arrives between two boundaries, its effective timing can be quantized to the next evaluation point.

CS2 still advances the world on its 64-tick schedule, but it records when an input happened within the interval. The server can therefore know the exact instant that movement starts, a shot is fired or a grenade is thrown. This finer timestamp is used when resolving the event, rather than treating every input in the same 15.625-millisecond window as if it occurred at one identical boundary.
What subtick can improve
- Shot timing: the server preserves the firing moment inside the tick interval for hit evaluation.
- Movement starts and stops: input timing is not reduced solely to the next fixed snapshot boundary.
- Grenade throws: release timing is recorded more precisely, which matters for lineups and jump-throw sequences.
What subtick cannot do
- It cannot make the server produce 128 snapshots every second.
- It cannot compensate for packets that arrive late, are dropped or are delayed by congestion.
- It cannot fix a PC that is stuttering because of unstable frame times.
Think of subtick as precise event timestamps layered onto a 64-Hz simulation and snapshot stream. That description is more accurate than calling CS2 “128 tick” or claiming that tickrate no longer matters.
Can you force 128 tick in official matchmaking?
No. A client console value cannot convert Valve matchmaking into a 128-tick service. The server process determines its simulation cadence and the maximum snapshot rate it can send. Client settings can express what the client would like to send or receive and can influence buffering, but they cannot change the server architecture.
Valve’s networking guidance makes the limit explicit: a server cannot send more than one snapshot per tick. If the server runs at 64 Hz, requesting 128 updates per second does not create the missing 64 server updates. At best, an unsupported request is limited by the server; at worst, unnecessary experimentation can increase bandwidth use or expose connection problems.

Why a “128” command appears to do nothing
- The client submits a desired command or update rate.
- The server checks what its own tick loop can generate.
- The connection delivers no more than the available snapshots, subject to bandwidth, CPU load, packet loss and choke.
- The client renders those updates alongside locally predicted movement and interpolation.
Seeing a console variable set to 128 therefore proves only that the local value was accepted. It does not prove that the remote server is simulating or sending at 128 Hz.
What to do with cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate
cl_cmdrate concerns how frequently the client attempts to send user commands. cl_updaterate concerns how frequently it asks to receive server updates. Neither command can exceed what the server supports. Valve’s Source multiplayer networking guidance says higher client values are useful only when the server supports them and the connection has sufficient bandwidth and CPU headroom.

- Start with current game defaults. Do not import an old CS:GO configuration simply because it contains 128 values or interpolation commands.
- Change one variable at a time. Record the original value so you can restore it immediately if telemetry worsens.
- Check telemetry after each change. Look for downstream and upstream tick misses, packet loss and jitter rather than judging from one duel.
- Undo unsupported increases. If loss, choke, missed ticks or unstable frame times appear, return to defaults while diagnosing the underlying connection or PC issue.
There is no universal “best” number that overrides server capacity. A setting that is harmless on a lightly loaded private server may be counterproductive on a congested connection. CS2’s subtick model also means that older CS:GO interpolation recipes should not be presented as guaranteed fixes.
Diagnosing bad hit registration and jitter
When a hit appears not to register, first determine whether the symptom is caused by local rendering, network delivery or server timing. Steam’s Source 2 Telemetry HUD exposes the most useful indicators.

Telemetry metrics to watch
- Downstream tick-miss rate: indicates that your client is missing expected server updates.
- Upstream tick-miss rate: indicates that commands or client-side updates are not arriving as expected.
- Packet loss: identifies packets that never reach the destination.
- Jitter: shows variation in packet arrival timing. A packet that arrives late can be almost as disruptive to real-time play as a packet that is dropped.
Enable the Source 2 telemetry HUD through CS2’s current telemetry settings, then observe it during the actual problem rather than only in a quiet menu or empty server. Steam’s documentation emphasizes that low average packet loss does not guarantee smooth play: late packets can produce visible corrections, delayed actions or unreliable-feeling fights.
Separate network symptoms from frame-time symptoms
| Symptom | More likely area to investigate | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent micro-stutter while telemetry is clean | Local rendering or frame-time stability | FPS graph, background processes, thermal or driver issues |
| Telemetry shows packet loss or choke | Connection path or local network congestion | Router load, Wi-Fi interference, upload saturation and other traffic |
| High jitter with little packet loss | Variable packet arrival time | Buffering, congestion and route stability rather than only headline bandwidth |
| Tick misses rise only on one server | Server load, route quality or that server’s capacity | Compare another region or server while keeping local settings unchanged |
Do not raise rate commands to hide a problem shown by telemetry. More requested updates cannot recover a packet that was late or lost, and they can add load when the connection or machine is already constrained.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare official, community and third-party servers
“64 tick” alone is not a complete quality description. When comparing servers, evaluate the whole delivery path:
- Snapshot cadence: how many simulation snapshots the server produces each second.
- Subtick implementation: whether the server uses subtick timing consistently for the events that matter.
- Network quality: latency, jitter, packet loss and choke between you and that server.
- Capacity: the administrator’s CPU headroom, bandwidth and workload during busy matches.
Community and third-party operators may advertise different rates, but an exact figure should be treated as current only when the operator documents it. A nominally faster server with unstable jitter can feel worse than a 64-tick server on a clean route. Conversely, a well-provisioned server can deliver consistent play without a client-side “128” switch.
Best Value
If you run a CS2 server
Server administrators control the simulation process and its networking budget; players do not. A dedicated-server operator should use current CS2 server documentation and verify the effective rate in the running environment rather than assuming a legacy configuration applies unchanged.
Rate configuration must be matched to available CPU and bandwidth. Overcommitting either resource can produce missed updates or choke for everyone connected. Test under realistic player counts and watch the same telemetry symptoms players see. Hosting availability, configuration syntax and supported rates can change with server updates, so verify those details against the current documentation for the software you are running.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Check local frame time. Confirm that the problem is not an FPS drop, shader hitch or background process before changing network variables.
- Turn on telemetry. Observe downstream and upstream tick misses, packet loss and jitter while reproducing the issue.
- Stabilize the connection. Pause large downloads and uploads, test wired networking where possible, and remove avoidable congestion.
- Restore defaults. Return
cl_cmdrate,cl_updaterateand related experimental values to the game’s defaults if metrics deteriorate. - Compare a second server. Keep your client unchanged and check whether the issue follows you or remains tied to one route or server.
- Escalate with evidence. Note the server, approximate time, telemetry readings and whether the issue is reproducible. That information is more useful than reporting only that the game feels “off.”
Bottom line for players
CS2 is a 64-tick game at the server snapshot level, with subtick timestamps that preserve when inputs occur inside each 15.625-millisecond interval. Subtick improves event timing; it does not create 128-Hz simulation. Official matchmaking cannot be upgraded by setting a client command to 128, and changing cl_cmdrate or cl_updaterate is worthwhile only when the server and connection can support the request. For hit-registration complaints, use the Source 2 telemetry HUD and diagnose jitter, loss, choke, missed ticks and frame-time instability before touching rate values.
