If a Counter-Strike 1.6 (HLDS) server is missing from the LAN tab, the usual cause is blocked discovery or a blocked UDP game port. Put every computer on the same local network, allow UDP 27015 through the host firewall, keep the server on port 27015, and connect directly with the host’s private IP if the browser remains empty. The sv_lan setting is rarely the real fix.

What “not showing in LAN” usually means
The LAN browser is only a convenience list. It must discover the dedicated server and then reach it. Either part can fail independently: the server may be running and playable by address while the list cannot discover it, or the list may show an entry that clients cannot actually join.

Operating-system firewalls, security suites, router access controls and Wi-Fi isolation commonly block that traffic by default. A second common cause is that the players are not really on the same local network—for example, one computer is on a guest SSID or a different VLAN even though both devices appear to use the same internet connection.
The practical recovery path is therefore deterministic: verify the network, identify the host’s private IPv4 address, allow the correct UDP port, test a direct connection, and only then investigate browser-specific behavior.

HLDS ports that matter
Valve Developer Community’s HLDS port reference lists the following services. For a normal LAN game, UDP 27015 is the important rule.

Online port lists sometimes disagree. For a dedicated HLDS server, use the Valve reference above rather than an unverified third-party list. The exact broadcast port or discovery mechanism used by the LAN tab is not clearly established in the available documentation, so opening a large range of ports is not a sound first step.
Fix the problem in the right order
1. Confirm that every player is on the same local network
- Connect the host and each player to the same home router or managed LAN. Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi can be mixed; the connection medium does not matter if the devices share the same local network.
- Do not use a guest Wi-Fi network for one of the machines. Guest networks commonly prevent device-to-device traffic.
- Temporarily disconnect VPN software, virtual-network adapters and hotspot connections while testing. They can change routing or make the game choose the wrong interface.
- Check that the computers have private addresses in the same subnet, such as
192.168.1.xon both machines. The first three numbers are not required to be identical on every network, but the addresses must be routable to one another and use a compatible subnet mask.
If the host is on a corporate, school or apartment network, client-to-client traffic may be deliberately blocked. In that case, a home-router test or a network administrator’s change is required; changing an in-game option cannot bypass that policy.
2. Find the host’s LAN IPv4 address
On the computer running HLDS, open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfigUnder the adapter that is actually connected, note the IPv4 Address. Use that private address—not the router’s public internet address and not an address belonging to a disconnected adapter. For example, if the active adapter shows 192.168.1.42, that is the address other players should test.

Addresses can change when a router renews a DHCP lease. If a connection worked yesterday and fails today, run ipconfig again instead of assuming the old address is still valid.

Start the server on its normal game port while troubleshooting. A server moved to another port may still be reachable by an explicit address, but a Steam community report says the LAN browser checks only a narrow range of ports. That report is anecdotal, so the reliable diagnostic choice is to return to UDP 27015 first.
Do not confuse the game port with RCON, HLTV or VAC ports. Opening TCP 27015 alone does not replace the required UDP rule.
4. Add a Windows inbound firewall rule
On the host, create a narrowly scoped rule for the game port:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection, then Advanced settings.
- Choose Inbound Rules and select New Rule….
- Choose Port, select UDP, and enter
27015as the specific local port. - Select Allow the connection. Apply it to the private network profile used by the host.
- Give the rule a recognizable name such as
HLDS UDP 27015, save it, and restart HLDS.
If the server executable itself is being blocked, add an application rule for hlds.exe (or the Counter-Strike game binary used by your installation) instead of allowing every port. The port rule and application rule can coexist.

TCP 27015 is optional for ordinary play. Add it only when you need RCON, and restrict the rule to trusted networks. Avoid broad “allow all inbound traffic” rules.
5. Check security software without leaving the host exposed
For a short diagnostic test, pause the third-party firewall or antivirus network shield, start HLDS, and ask another player to connect. If the server immediately appears or becomes reachable, the security product—not the game—is blocking it.
Re-enable protection as soon as the test ends. Then create a permanent exception for the HLDS executable or for inbound UDP 27015. Do not use a permanently disabled firewall as the solution.
The Valve guidance for diagnosing this type of failure is to have another person attempt a connection or observe incoming UDP traffic on port 27015 with a network monitor. A packet arriving at the host but being rejected by the application points to a server configuration problem; no packet arriving points to the network or firewall path.

For players inside the same home LAN, ordinary NAT port forwarding to the internet is normally unnecessary. However, router firewall rules, client isolation, VLAN boundaries and guest-network policies can still block one local device from reaching another.

- Disable “AP isolation,” “wireless isolation” or similarly named client-isolation features for the test network.
- Ensure the host and players are not separated into guest and main SSIDs.
- If a managed router has a LAN-to-LAN firewall policy, permit UDP 27015 between the relevant local addresses.
- Do not expose UDP 27015 to the public internet merely to solve a same-LAN browser problem. Internet hosting is a separate security and port-forwarding task.
7. Test the direct console connection
A missing browser entry does not prove that the server is unusable. In CS 1.6, open the developer console and enter:
connect 192.168.1.42:27015Replace 192.168.1.42 with the host’s current LAN IPv4 address. Include the port when testing so there is no ambiguity about which service should answer.

If the command succeeds, the server and game path are working; the remaining fault is discovery or browser filtering. Save the address in Find Servers → Favorites → Add a server if your client build exposes that option. Favorites bypass dependence on the LAN list for future sessions, although the host’s address may need updating after a DHCP change.
If the command reports that the server is unreachable, return to the network and firewall steps. A direct failure is not fixed by refreshing the LAN tab.
8. Verify the server is actually listening
Confirm that HLDS finished loading a map and is still running on the host. A crashed process, a server that exited after an error, or a launch on a different port will produce the same symptom as a discovery failure.
On Windows, you can use the built-in resource or network tools to check whether a process is listening on UDP 27015. The exact display varies by Windows version, so use the port number as the identifying detail. If nothing is listening, inspect the HLDS startup output and configuration before changing firewall rules again.

Why changing sv_lan often does not help
Community reports disagree about whether toggling sv_lan resolves an invisible server. In practice, a blocked UDP port, an isolated Wi-Fi client or an incorrect host address prevents connectivity regardless of that variable. Treat sv_lan as a setting to verify only after the network path works; do not use it as a substitute for opening UDP 27015.
Changing several variables at once also makes diagnosis harder. First prove that another machine can reach the host by IP, then evaluate any gameplay or server-mode setting.
LAN tab versus Internet tab
A server missing from the Internet tab is a different problem. Internet listing depends on master servers and external connectivity, not just local broadcast or LAN reachability. A third-party guide suggests editing masterserver.vdf in the cstrike folder, but that procedure is not verified here and download-site instructions can be outdated or unsafe. Do not edit the file or download replacement files merely because a local server is absent from the LAN tab.
For a same-network game, prove local reachability first with the private IP and UDP 27015. Internet-tab troubleshooting should be handled separately, with attention to public firewall rules, router forwarding and the particular client build.
A repeatable five-minute checklist
- Put the host and players on the same non-guest LAN; temporarily remove VPNs.
- Run
ipconfigon the host and record its active private IPv4 address. - Run HLDS on UDP 27015.
- Allow inbound UDP 27015 in Windows Firewall and any security suite; check router client-isolation settings.
- From a player computer, run
connect HOST-LAN-IP:27015. If it works, use Favorites while you troubleshoot the browser list.
This sequence separates a real connectivity failure from a cosmetic LAN-browser failure and avoids exposing the server unnecessarily or changing settings that do not address the blocked network path.
