Cryptocurrency Mining Explained: How Bitcoin Mining Works—and When It Pays

Bitcoin mining uses specialized computers to compete to add transaction blocks and earn rewards. Whether it pays depends on costs, hardware and changing network conditions.

Cryptocurrency mining is the proof-of-work process used by networks such as Bitcoin to compete over who can add the next block of transactions. A successful miner may earn newly issued bitcoin and transaction fees, but those rewards are not the same as profit: electricity, hardware, cooling, fees and other costs can outweigh them. Whether mining pays depends on the equipment, operating costs and changing network conditions.

What cryptocurrency mining means

Mining is not simply using a computer to check transactions, and it is not how every cryptocurrency operates. Bitcoin is the best-documented example: it uses proof of work, in which miners expend computing power to compete to propose the next block. Other networks may use different methods, such as proof of stake; those participants are not mining in the Bitcoin sense.

In Bitcoin, miners assemble candidate blocks and repeatedly calculate hashes while changing data in the candidate. A miner that finds a hash meeting the network’s target earns the opportunity to propose a block. Other network participants can check the proposed block against Bitcoin’s rules. As blocks accumulate, changing older transaction history would require redoing the proof of work and catching up with subsequent blocks, making that history harder to alter. The Bitcoin.org explanation likens the process to a competitive lottery that makes it difficult for one participant to keep adding blocks in succession.

How miners earn rewards

A successfully mined block can earn its miner—or the pool the miner works through—a block reward and the transaction fees included in that block. The block reward includes newly issued bitcoin. These are gross receipts, not a promise of net earnings: operating and equipment costs still have to be paid.

Bitcoin mining generally uses specialized hardware called a Bitcoin ASIC miner, designed to calculate the SHA-256 hashes used in Bitcoin proof of work. It is not equivalent to running ordinary software on a home computer. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) describes a specialized, concentrated hardware market in its 2025 report. That market context does not establish that a particular machine is available, suitable for a household or likely to repay its purchase cost.

Solo mining or joining a pool?

Mining is a competition against the network’s other miners. For one miner, finding a block can be rare, so the choice between mining alone and sharing work through a pool is largely a trade-off between payout variance and shared proceeds.

Approach How payouts work Main trade-off
Solo mining If successful, the miner receives the full block reward and fees. Higher variance and potentially long waits between payments.
Pooled mining Participants contribute hashing work and share proceeds roughly in proportion to their contributed work. Typically smaller, more frequent payouts; pool fees and operating rules apply, and payouts depend on the pool’s operation.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes these payout differences. A pool can smooth the timing of proceeds, but it does not eliminate electricity, hardware or other costs, and it cannot guarantee a profit.

Does cryptocurrency mining pay?

Sometimes, under favorable conditions, but there is no universal answer for an individual miner. Profitability depends on the value of rewards and fees relative to the full cost of producing them. Relevant variables include bitcoin’s market price, network difficulty and competition, block rewards, transaction fees, electricity rates, ASIC efficiency, uptime, cooling, maintenance, pool fees, facility expenses and hardware acquisition or financing costs.

A March 2026 SEC filing identifies bitcoin value, mining difficulty, block rewards and halving, global hashrate, power prices, fleet energy efficiency and data-center efficiency among factors that can affect mining profitability. Its discussion concerns a particular company; it is not a forecast or earnings estimate for a household miner. See the SEC filing.

CCAF’s 2025 report says electricity represented over 80% of surveyed miners’ cash-based operating expenses. It reports median survey costs of $45/MWh for electricity and $55.5/MWh all-in. These are survey findings for the miners covered by the report—not a household electricity quote, a current universal benchmark or a prediction of what a specific operation will pay. Costs and circumstances vary.

What a useful profitability estimate needs

A calculator result is only as useful as its assumptions. Before treating an estimate as a potential return, check that it specifies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact miner model and its energy efficiency;
  • the electricity price and the terms of the supply contract;
  • expected uptime and any cooling, facility or other overhead;
  • pool fees and payout rules, if mining through a pool;
  • the hardware purchase and financing costs;
  • the assumed bitcoin price, network difficulty, block rewards and fees; and
  • the date of the estimate, since price and network conditions change.

Compare estimated mining revenue with all those costs, rather than treating gross rewards as profit. A result that omits hardware, cooling or downtime is incomplete. Because these inputs change, a figure without its model and assumptions cannot establish what a particular person would earn.

What Bitcoin mining’s energy figures show

Bitcoin mining uses electricity, but estimates need to be read with their date, scope and method. CCAF’s 2025 report estimated annual Bitcoin electricity consumption at 138 TWh, about 0.54% of global electricity use. The estimate drew on data representing nearly half of global mining activity at the time of collection; it is not a real-time meter reading.

The same 2025 report estimated annual Bitcoin mining emissions at 39.8 MtCO₂e using its survey-based approach, compared with 69.6 MtCO₂e using an IP-based model. Those differing results illustrate how estimates depend on methodology; neither figure is a direct measurement of every miner’s emissions.

In a 2025 announcement describing the report’s miner survey, CCAF reported that 52.4% of surveyed mining energy use was sustainable energy: 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear. This is a survey result, not a claim that all Bitcoin miners use that energy mix. Alexander Neumueller, CCAF’s Research Lead for Digital Assets Energy and Climate Impact, said the report “directly addresses a persistent data gap by relying on direct practitioner insights rather than abstractions.” The announcement, dated 28 April 2025, describes the survey findings.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration provides further context for energy planning and cautions that the Cambridge Bitcoin estimates it discusses do not include other proof-of-work cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin figures therefore should not be presented as a total for all cryptocurrency mining. See the EIA discussion.
