Many centralized exchanges also hold customers’ assets and manage the private keys needed to access them—but trading and custody are distinct functions, and the protections attached to an account depend on the provider, service, asset, and country.
What is a cryptocurrency exchange?
An exchange provides a way to trade crypto assets. Some platforms match buyers and sellers through an order book; others offer a direct purchase or conversion service. One company may combine trading, brokerage, and asset custody, even though those functions carry different risks and may be subject to different rules.

When an exchange account is custodial, the platform generally controls the private keys and manages access to assets held for customers. That can make account access more convenient, but it means the customer relies on the provider’s security, recordkeeping, withdrawal processes, and ability to return assets. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 investor bulletin on crypto custody recommends asking who controls access, how assets are safeguarded, and what happens if a custodian fails.
What is the difference between an exchange and a wallet?
An exchange is a service or venue for transactions. A wallet is a means of managing the keys used to access crypto assets. Wallets do not literally contain the crypto; they store or manage private keys that authorize transactions. An exchange may provide a custodial wallet as part of an account, while a separate wallet can put key control in the user’s hands.

| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | The provider generally manages the keys and account access. | The provider must safeguard assets and provide functioning access and withdrawal processes; the customer must assess the provider and account terms. |
| Self-custody wallet, including a hardware wallet | The user controls the keys or recovery phrase. | The user must protect the keys and recovery information and maintain a way to restore access. |
Self-custody removes reliance on an exchange for routine key control, but it does not remove risk. If keys or a recovery phrase are lost, stolen, damaged, or exposed, access may be permanently lost. A hardware wallet is one physical form of self-custody; it does not take responsibility for recovery away from its owner. The SEC bulletin advises: “Store your seed phrase in a secure place and do not share it with anyone.”
Is my crypto safe on an exchange?
No exchange account can be described as safe solely because the platform is well known or displays a reserve report. In a custodial arrangement, risks include a security incident, account-access problems, withdrawal restrictions, or provider failure. The practical question is how the particular provider handles the assets and what rights the account terms give customers if something goes wrong.
Before depositing, look for clear answers to these questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Which legal entity holds the account and the assets?
- Who can access the private keys, and is custody outsourced?
- Does the provider use hot wallets, cold wallets, or both, and how does it describe its safeguards?
- Can customer assets be lent, pledged, or commingled? What do the terms say?
- What happens to customer claims and withdrawals if the provider becomes insolvent or stops operating?
- What account recovery, complaints, and dispute processes are available?
- What insurance is claimed, what does it cover, and what exclusions apply?
Do not assume crypto held at an exchange has bank-deposit insurance or the protections that apply to a registered securities intermediary. The SEC’s investor bulletin on crypto asset securities explains that U.S. protections depend on specific regulated roles, such as registered broker-dealers, investment advisers, and alternative trading systems. Crypto platforms may combine functions that are divided among different regulated firms; those protections do not automatically extend to every crypto account or asset.

Are proof-of-reserves reports the same as audits?
No. A proof-of-reserves assessment is not the same as a financial-statement audit conducted under applicable standards. It may offer a limited, point-in-time view of selected assets, but it may not show all liabilities or activity between assessment dates. The SEC discusses these limitations in its crypto asset securities investor bulletins.
When a provider publishes a reserve assessment, check what it actually covers: the date, assets and liabilities included, method, third-party assessor, assurance level, and how often it is updated. A reserve report alone does not prove that every customer asset is available for withdrawal or guarantee solvency.
What are maker and taker fees?
On an order book, a maker order adds liquidity—typically a limit order that rests on the book—while a taker order uses available liquidity and executes against existing orders. Exchanges may charge different rates for maker and taker executions. The exact fee can depend on the trading pair, recent trading volume, account tier, and provider.

A direct or “instant” purchase is not necessarily priced like an order-book trade. Its quote may include a spread or other pricing difference, as well as a stated transaction charge. Payment-method, transfer, and withdrawal costs can also apply. Compare the total cost of the same transaction rather than a headline fee in isolation.

For example, Kraken’s published schedule effective October 5, 2026 lists separate charges for its instant-trade product and tiered order-book fees, and notes that payment fees may also apply. Its Kraken Pro fee support article, updated October 1, 2026, says rates depend on 30-day volume, pair, and maker-or-taker status. This is a dated vendor example, not a market-wide benchmark; check the provider’s current terms before trading.

Start with your country and the transaction you actually expect to make. A platform’s available services, supported assets, legal entity, fees, and protections may differ by location. Compare the following before funding an account.
Confirm local availability and the legal entity
Check that the service is available where you live and identify the company named in the account agreement. Review which entity provides trading, custody, and payment services rather than assuming one set of rules covers every function. U.S. securities protections apply to specified regulated roles, not to all crypto services. In the EU, MiCA Article 75 sets custody and administration obligations for covered crypto-asset service providers; it is not a worldwide rule.

Assess account security and recovery
Review multifactor authentication (MFA), withdrawal controls, phishing protections, and account-recovery steps. Check how the provider explains key and asset safeguards, including whether custody is outsourced. Decide whether the provider’s recovery process and your own security practices fit your needs.
Calculate the full cost of your intended transaction
Use the same amount, asset, payment method, order type, and withdrawal plan when comparing providers. Include:
- The quoted purchase price or spread.
- Any instant-purchase or conversion charge.
- Maker or taker trading fees, including account-tier conditions.
- Payment-method charges.
- Withdrawal fees and applicable network fees.
Also check for account setup, annual asset-based, transfer, and account-closure fees. An advanced order-book rate is not a fair comparison with another provider’s direct-purchase quote unless the transactions are equivalent.
Check asset and network support before buying
Confirm that the platform supports the asset and the specific network you intend to use for deposits or withdrawals. A listed token may not be withdrawable over every network. Review withdrawal limits and processing terms in advance so you know whether you can move the asset as planned.

Read custody terms and failure provisions
Find out whether assets may be lent, pledged, or commingled, and what the provider says about customer claims if it fails. Ask how complaints and recovery requests are handled. If the provider claims insurance, read the policy description and exclusions rather than treating the word “insured” as a guarantee for every customer asset or loss.
Examine transparency claims closely
For any reserve assessment, inspect the reporting date, scope, liabilities included, method, assessor, and assurance level. Determine whether it is an independent assessment or a financial-statement audit under relevant standards; those are not interchangeable descriptions.
What to check before making your first deposit
- Identify the provider. Confirm the legal entity serving your location and read the account and custody terms.
- Choose the transaction route. Decide whether you will use a direct purchase or an order book, and compare like with like.
- Price the complete transaction. Add the displayed price or spread, trade and payment charges, and the cost of any planned withdrawal.
- Verify the exit route. Confirm the asset, withdrawal network, limits, processing terms, and destination compatibility.
- Set up account safeguards. Enable available MFA and withdrawal protections, and understand account recovery and phishing defenses.
- Decide who should control the keys. If you choose self-custody, establish a secure recovery plan before transferring assets; if you keep assets with a provider, understand its custody and failure terms.
Fees, supported assets, availability, and rules can change. Verify current provider terms and the legal context that applies in your country before relying on an exchange for trading or custody.
