Crypto Wallet-Drainer Scams: How They Work and What They Can Access

Wallet drainers rely on deceptive token approvals or signatures—not usually just a wallet connection. Learn what they can access and what to do after a suspicious request.

A wallet-drainer scam tricks you into approving a token transfer or signing a malicious authorization. Simply connecting your wallet to a site usually does not let it move your assets; the danger comes from what you approve or sign. If you suspect a compromise, protect any assets that remain, review and revoke harmful approvals, and treat offers to recover confirmed transfers for a fee as likely scams.

How a wallet-drainer scam works

A drainer is a phishing tool designed for Web3. Scammers impersonate a legitimate project, then steer people to a page or app that asks them to connect a wallet and approve a transaction or sign a message. Common lures include fake airdrops, promotions in Discord, compromised social accounts, and cloned project sites. Chainalysis describes these tactics and notes that total losses are hard to measure because many incidents go unreported (Chainalysis).

A typical attack might begin with a sponsored search result or a link in a community channel. The imitation site presents a request that looks routine. If you approve it, the attacker may use the resulting authorization to transfer assets within its terms. MetaMask describes kits that can batch transfers of tokens, NFTs, and Permit2-authorized assets; that does not mean every drainer can take every asset from every wallet (MetaMask).

What a connection, approval, and signature actually allow

Connecting a wallet

A connection generally shares your public wallet address with a site and may let it read publicly available balances. By itself, connecting does not grant permission to transfer your tokens. MetaMask addresses this distinction in its wallet-connection FAQ.

Approving a token allowance

On Ethereum and other EVM-style networks, a token allowance is an on-chain permission for a specified spender contract to move a particular token, up to the approved amount. A malicious or unlimited allowance can expose all of that token held in the wallet to that spender. The permission can remain active after you leave the site or disconnect your wallet; disconnection does not revoke it (MetaMask approval guidance).

Signing a message or authorization

Some authorizations, including Permit2-style ones, are signed messages rather than on-chain transactions at the moment you sign. A deceptive prompt can make an authorization to transfer tokens look like an ordinary wallet request. Read the requested action, token, spender, amount, and any expiry shown by your wallet; do not treat every signature as harmless simply because it is not presented as a conventional transaction. MetaMask reported a 207% rise in “signature phishing” exploits, citing its February 2026 Crypto Security Report in an article published July 10, 2026. That figure is not a measure of total drainer losses or scam prevalence (MetaMask).

What a drainer may be able to access

The permission you granted determines the scope. A token allowance concerns the relevant token and spender, up to the allowance amount. A malicious signature can permit transfers described by its terms. Some drainer kits target NFTs or combine several transfer methods, but no single approval should be assumed to grant access to every asset or every blockchain.

A seed phrase or private key compromise is different and more serious: someone with those credentials can control the wallet, rather than being limited to a particular token allowance. Ethereum.org says never to enter a seed phrase on a website or share a seed phrase or private key (Ethereum.org security guidance).

What to do after a suspicious wallet interaction

  1. Move remaining assets if the wallet may be compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase on a secure device, then move remaining assets to it. If you exposed your seed phrase or private key, do not continue relying on that wallet. Use a trusted wallet setup process and never enter the new phrase into a website (Ethereum.org).
  2. Review and revoke suspicious approvals. Use an approval checker for the relevant network, such as Revoke.cash or a supported block explorer, and verify the token and spender before revoking. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and costs a network fee. It can stop future transfers under that allowance, but it cannot retrieve assets already transferred (MetaMask; Ethereum.org).
  3. Secure linked accounts and preserve evidence. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts, enable two-factor authentication, and keep transaction hashes, wallet addresses, screenshots, and messages. Report the suspicious site and addresses to relevant services or authorities (Ethereum.org).
  4. Ignore paid recovery promises. Ethereum.org warns that confirmed blockchain transfers cannot be reversed: “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” Be especially cautious of anyone demanding an upfront fee to recover funds; recovery offers can be a follow-up scam (Ethereum.org scam guidance).

How to reduce the risk

  • Check the domain carefully and avoid unsolicited links, fake airdrops, and unexpected wallet prompts.
  • Read each transaction or signature request before approving it. When possible, avoid unlimited allowances and use a smaller spend cap appropriate to the action.
  • Review token approvals periodically. Disconnecting a site is not a substitute for revoking an allowance.
  • Never share or enter a seed phrase or private key on a website.
  • Consider a hardware wallet for offline private-key storage. Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as options, but offline storage does not protect you from signing a malicious transaction or authorization (Ethereum.org).

Approval tools and wallet features vary by network, and the detailed approval mechanisms described here apply to Ethereum and EVM-style tokens; other blockchains may use different authorization models.
