Analyze a crypto token by testing five separate claims: what the project does, how the token might capture value, how its network and contract are controlled, who is accountable, and whether real demand and liquidity exist. A project can succeed without its token gaining value, and no checklist can predict a token’s price or make it safe.
If you are comparing tokens, apply the same five checks to each one. Base your notes on the project’s white paper, disclosures, technical documentation, and evidence of activity—not just its ticker, price chart, or promotional summary.

1. What does the token do, and what rights does it give you?
Separate the intended function from what exists today
Identify whether the token is meant to provide access, enable payments, support governance, or serve another stated purpose. Then distinguish features that are live from those that appear only on a roadmap. A specific, understandable plan is easier to assess than a broad promise of future utility.
Read the terms behind the offer
Check what the project says the proceeds will fund, what rights a holder receives, and whether redemption, refunds, or resale are possible. Find out which issuer or other entity stands behind those promises. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin advises investors to ask what the money will be used for, what rights the token provides, and whether and how holders can get money back or resell.

2. How could the project’s activity create demand for the token?
Trace supply, allocations, and incentives
Look for the total and circulating supply, who receives tokens, how new issuance works, and when locked or reserved tokens may be released. Examine the incentives for users, validators, developers, insiders, and other participants. If disclosures do not explain allocations or unlocks, record that as an unknown rather than assuming supply is stable.
Test the project-to-token value connection
Ask whether using the product actually requires the token, creates continuing demand for it, or gives holders a defined claim on anything. A useful product may attract customers without giving its token a durable role or a way to capture that activity. The CFTC identifies adoption, future demand, acceptance for payments, and the connection between token value and the offered product or service as possible value factors. EY’s due-diligence framework also includes tokenomics, financial metrics, and treasury management. Neither source supplies a universal formula for valuing a token.
3. What do the network, contract, and security evidence show?
Verify the asset and its technical controls
Confirm the token’s network and contract address using reliable project documentation. A name or ticker by itself may not uniquely identify the asset. Where information is available, check whether the blockchain and code are public, who can change the contract, and whether privileged keys can pause, upgrade, or otherwise control it.

Read an audit as a record of scope, not a safety certificate
Find out who conducted any independent security review, what code and risks it covered, and whether the deployed contract has changed since. Look for disclosed incidents and subsequent fixes. An audit is evidence about a defined review; it cannot establish that a system will never fail. The SEC’s July 25, 2017 Investor Bulletin puts the technical questions plainly: “Ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether the code has been published, and whether there has been an independent cybersecurity audit.”
4. Who is accountable, and what legal context applies?
Investigate people, entities, and decision-making power
Research identifiable founders, developers, issuers, and affiliated entities. Look for relevant experience, clear responsibilities, conflicts of interest, and a record of delivering on stated commitments. Examine how upgrades, treasury decisions, and governance votes are handled; a public vote does not necessarily mean control is broadly distributed.
Read disclosures in the relevant jurisdiction
Check who issued the token, what risks and rights the offering documents disclose, and which law or jurisdiction they identify. Legal classification depends on the token’s facts and structure; a broad label such as “utility token” does not settle the question. The SEC says some tokens may be securities depending on the circumstances. Its 2026 educational material also explains that tokenized securities can give holders rights that differ materially from those attached to the underlying security.

Requirements also differ by token category and jurisdiction. For example, MiCA Article 51 sets white-paper requirements for e-money tokens in the European Union, including issuer and token details, holder rights and obligations, technology, risks, and environmental impacts of the consensus mechanism. That is a rule for a specific EU category, not a universal checklist for every token.

5. Is demand real, and could you exit under adverse conditions?
Look for users, competition, and fragile assumptions
Separate current users and activity from forecasts of future adoption. Ask what evidence would make those forecasts measurable, who competes for the same users, and whether forks or technology changes could undermine the project’s position. Consider operational risks, including theft, alongside market risks.
Check liquidity rather than relying on a displayed price
Note where the token trades and whether there appears to be enough liquidity for the position you are considering. A quoted price does not guarantee that you can sell at that price, or sell your desired amount, when you need to. The CFTC lists adoption, demand, competition, forks, technology changes, liquidity, and hacking among factors that can affect current or longer-term value. It warns that buying only in the hope of reselling at a higher price is speculation with considerable risk.

How should you use the five checks?
-
Collect the project’s white paper, roadmap, offering disclosures, tokenomics information, technical documentation, and any available security-review details.
-
For each of the five checks above, write down the claim, the evidence supporting it, and the most important unanswered question. Distinguish disclosed facts from forecasts and assumptions.

Compare candidates on the same five dimensions: function and holder rights; supply, incentives, and the link between project activity and token demand; code, upgrade controls, audit scope, and security history; team, governance, disclosures, and jurisdiction; and adoption, competition, liquidity, and downside risks.
-
Do not turn the notes into a pretend-precise score or valuation. The CFTC says there is no single widely accepted formula for determining a particular token’s value. If a key claim cannot be checked, treat it as unresolved rather than filling the gap with a price target or a confident-sounding assumption.
This is general educational information, not individualized investment, legal, tax, or security-audit advice. The CFTC states that its advisory does not provide legal or investment advice to an individual and cautions against claims of guaranteed value or results.
