Crypto Token Listing Scams: Warning Signs and How to Verify a Listing

A listing claim is not proof that a token is safe or officially approved. Verify it through the exchange’s independently located channels, research the project, and know what to do if you have already sent money or information.

A claim that a crypto token is listed—or about to be listed—on an exchange is not proof that the announcement is genuine, the token is safe, or the platform has regulatory approval. Verify the claim on the exchange’s official channels reached independently, investigate the token and its promoters, and do not send money, credentials, or personal information in response to an unsolicited message.

How to tell whether a token listing announcement is real

Start with the exchange, not the message making the claim. Find the exchange’s official website or customer-support contact independently, then check its own announcements or ask support whether the specific token and listing date are genuine. Do not click links or call numbers in an unexpected message: the FBI warns that scammers impersonate exchange employees, manufacture urgency, and ask for login or identification information. If anyone unexpectedly asks for your account login, do not provide it. FBI guidance on cryptocurrency scams.

Check the exact website address rather than relying on a screenshot, a social-media post, or a link someone sent. Independently look up the token, project, company, promoter, and any claimed affiliates. Search their names with terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” A real listing announcement should be traceable to the exchange’s own channels; a promoter’s claim alone is not confirmation.

Even a genuine listing or platform selection does not establish that the token is safe or that the platform is a national securities exchange. The SEC has cautioned that some digital-asset trading platforms’ claimed selection standards are not reviewed by the SEC and should not be equated with listing standards for national securities exchanges. That caution does not mean every platform or token is unlawful. SEC statement on crypto-asset platforms and selection standards.

Warning signs that deserve a pause

Unexpected contact and pressure to act immediately

An unsolicited call, text, email, or direct message claiming there is an urgent issue with an exchange account—or offering an exclusive listing opportunity—calls for independent verification. Scammers may use urgency to get people to click a link, reveal account details, or send funds. End the conversation and contact the exchange through details you find yourself. The FBI says not to use a number supplied by a caller or links sent by an unexpected contact. FBI guidance on exchange impersonation.

Guaranteed returns, little risk, or demands for cryptocurrency

Promises of high guaranteed gains with little or no risk are red flags, especially when paired with unsolicited promotion or pressure to pay in cryptocurrency. They are reasons to stop and check—not, by themselves, proof of fraud. The SEC and CFTC warn about unsolicited pitches and unlicensed sellers; the FTC also warns about promises of fast money and pressure to pay in crypto. FTC guidance on cryptocurrency scams.

Hype standing in for evidence

A sudden price spike, influencer endorsement, online acquaintance’s tip, or repeated “listing soon” posts do not establish a project’s value or legitimacy. The CFTC advises against buying tokens based on social-media tips or sudden price movements. Look for project documentation and independently check the people behind it instead. Unclear token rights, project, or use of proceeds

Before considering a token, determine what rights it provides, what product or service it is meant to support, and how proceeds will be used. Project materials such as a white paper can help answer those questions, but their existence does not prove their claims are true. The CFTC also identifies liquidity, future demand, competing projects, technological change, and theft as factors that can affect a token’s possible value. CFTC customer advisory on digital tokens.

Fake profits followed by a withdrawal charge

A displayed account balance is not proof that profits exist or can be withdrawn. The FBI describes investment schemes in which criminals show fake profits, then demand purported taxes or fees when a victim tries to withdraw. Do not send more money to release a balance or recover funds; the FBI also warns about recovery services that demand upfront payment. FBI warning on cryptocurrency investment schemes.

  1. Verify the exchange independently. Find its official site and customer-support channel without using the sender’s links or phone number. Check the exchange’s own announcements for the token and the specific claim.
  2. Inspect the exact web address. Look for misspellings or an unfamiliar domain, and do not trust a page simply because it uses an exchange’s name or logo.
  3. Research the token and its promoters. Identify the people, company, project, and claimed affiliates. Search names with “review,” “scam,” and “complaint,” and look for independent, checkable information.
  4. Read the project’s explanation. Find what rights the token confers, what it is intended to support, and how the money raised will be used. Treat missing or vague answers as a reason for caution, not as proof of a particular legal violation.
  5. Assess the evidence and risks. Prefer specific documentation over urgency, hype, or guaranteed-return language. Consider whether the project explains liquidity, future demand, competitors, technology changes, and theft risks.
  6. Stop if the contact asks for secrets or a pressured payment. Do not share exchange credentials or personal information with an unexpected contact, and do not send cryptocurrency because someone says a listing, profit, or account is at risk.

For comparisons between claims, focus on whether the exchange and contact route can be verified, token rights and intended use are clear, promoters are identifiable, documentation supports the claims, and proceeds and project risks are explained. No single item is a substitute for checking the rest.

What to do if you have already sent money or information

  1. Stop sending funds and stop using the suspicious contact channel. Do not pay additional taxes, fees, or supposed recovery costs.
  2. Secure any potentially affected exchange account. Contact the real exchange through a separately verified channel if you shared credentials or suspect account access has been compromised.
  3. Preserve evidence. Save messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, website addresses, app names, payment details, wallet addresses, transaction IDs and dates, and screenshots. Keep information about the person or company, communication methods, bank accounts and crypto wallets, and recipients when available.
  4. Report the incident. In the United States, report suspected internet crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), report crypto scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and report token fraud to the CFTC at CFTC.gov/Complaint where relevant. Outside the United States, contact local law enforcement, your financial regulator, and consumer-protection authority.

Reporting creates a record but does not guarantee that lost cryptocurrency will be recovered. Avoid anyone who promises recovery in exchange for an upfront payment. FBI/IC3 reporting guidance.

What the available fraud figures do—and do not—show

The FBI said victims were defrauded of more than $2 billion in cryptocurrency investment schemes during 2022, in an IC3 release published in 2023. The FTC said that since October 2020 people had reported more than $80 million in losses to bogus cryptocurrency investments, in a 2021 report. These figures cover broader investment schemes, not token-listing scams specifically; they should not be read as a count or estimate of listing fraud. FBI IC3 2022 report FTC 2021 report.

The cited U.S. federal guidance describes neighboring frauds—exchange impersonation, fake crypto investment websites, token impersonation, and pump-and-dump promotion. It does not establish a single formal category or incidence estimate for “token listing scams,” nor does it show that every exchange listing process or listing fee is fraudulent. Whether securities laws apply to a particular token or platform depends on the facts and circumstances.
