Crypto Market Cap: Definition, Formula, and What It Does—and Doesn’t—Measure

Crypto market cap multiplies a coin’s price by its estimated circulating supply. The figure compares relative size, but it does not measure invested cash, liquidity, or safety.

Crypto market cap is the current price of a cryptocurrency multiplied by its estimated circulating supply. It is a way to compare the relative size of cryptoassets—not a measure of how much cash has been invested in a project.

How is crypto market cap calculated?

Market cap = price per coin or token × circulating supply. For example, if 10 million tokens are counted as circulating and each trades at $2, the indicated market cap is $20 million. This is an illustrative calculation, not a live asset statistic.

The result can change when the price changes, when the circulating-supply estimate changes, or when both change. The price reference and supply estimate depend on the data provider’s inputs and methodology. CoinMarketCap describes its aggregate crypto market capitalization as the sum of the market caps of cryptoassets that meet its stated requirements; a site-wide total is an aggregate measure, not the value of a separate coin or token. CoinMarketCap’s methodology explains its calculation and aggregate.

What does circulating supply mean?

Circulating supply is an estimate of the coins or tokens considered to be circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands. CoinMarketCap calls it “the best approximation” of that amount, while cautioning that the network cannot reliably know exactly how much supply is actively circulating. It is therefore not necessarily a directly observable count of units that can be traded at any moment. See CoinMarketCap Academy’s circulating supply definition.

Providers can apply different criteria to locked or otherwise inaccessible balances, and supply estimates can be revised. Issuance, burns, and token unlocks may also change the figures. When comparing market caps, check which provider supplied the price and circulating-supply data and how that provider treats supply.

Circulating, total, and maximum supply

  • Circulating supply: the provider’s estimate of units considered to be circulating.
  • Total supply: units already created, minus verifiably burned units. This may include units that are locked or otherwise unavailable.
  • Maximum supply: the estimated or encoded upper limit on units that may exist, if the asset has a fixed limit. Some assets do not have one.

CoinMarketCap’s glossary defines total supply separately from circulating supply. Supply definitions and estimates are provider-dependent, not guaranteed counts of freely tradable tokens.

How is market cap different from FDV?

Fully diluted valuation (FDV) applies the current price to total or maximum supply, depending on the provider’s definition. Market cap instead uses circulating supply. FDV can highlight how much larger a valuation would be if more of an asset’s potential supply were counted, but it is a hypothetical comparison: it does not mean every unit will be issued or sold at today’s price.

For a comparison to be meaningful, note whether FDV uses total or maximum supply and consider future issuance and unlocks. CoinGecko’s explainer discusses market cap and FDV in crypto.

Does market cap mean that much money was invested?

No. Market cap applies a current marginal or reference price to all units counted in the supply figure. A price move can raise or lower the calculated market cap without an equivalent amount of new money entering or leaving the project. It is not a tally of purchases, cash reserves, or capital invested.

Does a larger market cap mean an asset is easier to trade or safer?

No. Market cap does not directly show how easily a large position can be bought or sold without moving the price; that depends on liquidity and trading conditions. Nor does market cap alone establish a project’s quality, adoption, holder concentration, or safety.

When comparing assets, examine the market-cap figure alongside:

  • FDV and the supply assumption used to calculate it;
  • the price source and data-provider conventions; and
  • liquidity and trading conditions.

CoinMarketCap’s FAQ describes market capitalization as a way to rank relative size, calculated by multiplying price by circulating supply. That is a useful shorthand, but the supply estimate and market conditions determine what the figure can tell you. CoinMarketCap’s FAQ provides its explanation.
