Crypto Maker vs. Taker: What the Terms Mean for Your Trades

Crypto maker and taker describe whether a filled order rested on the order book or matched against existing liquidity. The distinction affects fee classification, but a limit order is not automatically a maker order.

In crypto order-book trading, a maker execution comes from an order that rested on the book before it filled; a taker execution matches against resting orders and removes available liquidity. The terms describe how a trade interacts with the order book—not whether you are buying or selling. They also help determine which fee category an exchange applies.

What are maker and taker fees?

Exchanges use “maker” and “taker” to classify executions in an order-book market. A resting order adds an available bid or ask for other traders to match. When another order trades against it, that resting liquidity is removed. Binance.US describes the taker side this way: “A taker order removes liquidity: it fills immediately against an existing order, so you pay the taker fee.” (Binance.US Help Center, June 3, 2026.)

The classification is about the execution, not the trader’s intention or direction. A buyer can be a maker or taker, as can a seller. What matters is whether the filled quantity rested first or matched available orders immediately. (Coinbase; Kraken.)

How a maker execution works

A limit order that joins the order book without filling immediately can wait for a later match. The quantity that rests and then fills is a maker execution because it supplied liquidity that another order could trade against. For example, a buy limit order below the current available sell prices may remain on the book until a seller trades with it. The exact outcome depends on the live order book and order settings. How a taker execution works

A taker order consumes liquidity already waiting in the book. Market orders are typically takers because they match against available orders immediately. A limit order can be a taker, too: if its price is immediately executable against the opposite side of the book, it can fill at once rather than rest. Kraken notes that a limit order priced on the wrong side of the book can execute as a marketable order. (Kraken.)

Can one order be both maker and taker?

Yes. If an order first fills immediately for some quantity and the remainder rests on the book, the immediate portion is classified as taker and the later resting portion can be classified as maker. Binance.US and Coinbase Advanced describe this split-fill behavior. Fees may therefore differ across fills from the same submitted order, depending on the venue’s schedule. (Binance.US; Coinbase.)

Does a limit order guarantee maker fees?

No. “Limit” describes a price condition; it does not guarantee that the order will rest. A marketable limit order can match immediately and be charged at the taker rate for the filled quantity. Kraken’s post-limit option is intended to ensure an order rests or is canceled rather than immediately taking liquidity. Check the exchange’s order options and preview before submitting. (Kraken.)

How maker and taker fees differ by exchange

There is no universal maker discount. Fee treatment depends on the venue’s current schedule and may vary by product, market, account tier, trading volume, or other criteria. Coinbase says maker and taker rates can be the same or different; it also notes that a negative maker rate can indicate a rebate. The applicable rate is the one shown for your venue, product, and account—not a general rule about crypto trading. (Coinbase; Binance.US.)

Maker versus taker at a glance

Execution What happened Liquidity effect Typical fee category
Maker The filled order rested on the book before matching. Supplies liquidity for another order. Maker rate under the venue’s current schedule.
Taker The order matched against available resting orders. Removes liquidity from the book. Taker rate under the venue’s current schedule.

Why the lowest fee rate may not mean the best execution

A resting order may not fill when you want it to, or at all. An immediately matching order trades against the available book liquidity instead. So the fee rate alone does not establish which approach has the better overall outcome: timing, execution certainty, price, and the exchange’s fee schedule all matter. That is a practical consequence of the mechanics, not a universal cost comparison.
