Crypto Hard Forks Explained: What Changes and What Can Split

A hard fork changes blockchain consensus rules in a way older software may reject. Learn how that differs from a soft fork, a temporary block fork, and a copied codebase.

A crypto hard fork is a change to a blockchain’s consensus rules that older software does not necessarily accept. Blocks valid under the new rules may be invalid under the old ones, so node operators may need to upgrade to follow the changed network. A hard fork can split a blockchain if groups continue using different rules, but a lasting split—and a second cryptocurrency—is not automatic.

What makes a blockchain change a hard fork?

Blockchain nodes use consensus rules to decide which blocks and transactions are valid. A hard fork changes those rules in a way that is not backward compatible: a block accepted under the new rules may be rejected by software enforcing the old ones. Bitcoin Core describes a hard fork as a consensus-rule change under which blocks invalid under the old rules may become valid under the new rules (Bitcoin Core’s statement, January 7, 2016).

Because old and upgraded software can disagree about validity, operators who want to follow the new rules may need to install compatible client software. Nodes that do not upgrade can reject blocks produced under the new rules and may no longer follow the same chain as upgraded nodes.

How is a hard fork different from a soft fork?

The key difference is how the new rules interact with older validation software. A soft fork is designed so upgraded nodes can still validate blocks produced by non-upgraded nodes, as long as those blocks also satisfy the new rules. A hard fork can make newly valid blocks unacceptable to nodes still enforcing the old rules. See the Ethereum glossary for definitions of both terms.

Change Compatibility with older software Possible effect
Hard fork Not backward compatible in the relevant rule change; old software may reject blocks accepted under the new rules. Operators may need to upgrade. If groups keep validating different rules, separate chains can continue.
Soft fork Designed so upgraded nodes can accept blocks produced by non-upgraded nodes when those blocks comply with the new rules. Participants can adopt the tighter rules without requiring every older node to reject the resulting blocks.

These terms describe compatibility, not whether a change is popular, successful, or valuable. A hard fork alone does not determine what users, developers, miners, validators, or markets will do.

Does every hard fork create two blockchains?

No. A hard fork can be coordinated so participants move to the new rules together. A split becomes possible when different groups continue validating different rule sets. Those groups may follow separate chains for a time, potentially indefinitely, but one chain may also lose participants and disappear. The BIP 99 discussion of consensus-rule changes and NIST’s Blockchain Technology Overview describe these possible outcomes.

It is therefore inaccurate to say that every hard fork creates a new cryptocurrency or that both resulting chains will persist or have market value. Whether a particular chain continues, and whether any asset associated with it is supported or traded, depends on the people and services involved; those are separate, time-sensitive questions.

What does a hard fork look like in practice?

For a planned change, developers can include the new protocol rules in client software and coordinate when nodes begin applying them. In a historical example, the Ethereum Foundation’s October 18, 2016 FAQ described a planned hard fork that would activate at a specified block number. Nodes that did not upgrade could remain with the old rules and be unable to operate on the post-fork network. That FAQ illustrates the coordination mechanism; it is not current Ethereum upgrade guidance (Ethereum Foundation’s 2016 FAQ).

The important practical question for a node operator is which rules their installed client will enforce and which network they intend to follow. A software update or announced activation is not, by itself, proof that a permanent chain split will result.

Three other meanings of “fork” to distinguish

  • Temporary block fork: Two competing blocks can appear at the same height under the same consensus rules. Nodes may temporarily see different versions of the ledger; this is not necessarily a protocol change.
  • Software or Git fork: Someone copies a project’s codebase to develop it separately. That does not by itself change a blockchain’s consensus rules or split its ledger.
  • Consensus hard fork: The protocol’s validity rules change in a way that is incompatible with older validation software.

Bitcoin’s developer glossary distinguishes these uses of “fork.” The word alone does not tell you whether a blockchain’s rules changed.

What to check when you hear about a hard fork

  • Identify the exact rule change and whether old client software will reject blocks that follow it.
  • Check whether node operators are expected to upgrade and when the new rules take effect.
  • Find out whether the change is coordinated across participants or whether groups plan to maintain different rules.
  • Treat claims about a permanent split, a second asset, exchange support, or price as separate claims that need current, chain-specific evidence.
