Crypto Exchanges vs. Self-Custody Wallets: Which Is Right for You?

An exchange provider controls access to its keys; with self-custody, you do. Compare the responsibilities, risks, and practical checks before deciding.

The key difference is who controls access to your crypto: with an exchange account, the provider controls the private keys; with self-custody, you control them and take responsibility for protecting and recovering them. Choose based on whether you prefer provider-managed access or are ready to manage the keys and recovery information yourself. Neither option is risk-free.

What does “custody” mean?

A crypto wallet does not hold coins inside the device. It manages the private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets. A private key authorizes transactions; a public key can be shared to receive assets but does not authorize them.

Custody describes who controls access to those keys. In self-custody, you control the keys. In third-party custody, such as an exchange account, the provider controls access to them. An exchange account is therefore not the same as a self-custody wallet, even if the exchange gives you a screen for viewing balances and making transactions.

How do the two options compare?

Consideration Exchange or other third-party custody Self-custody wallet
Who controls key access? The provider controls access to the private keys. You control access to the private keys.
What you manage Your account access and the provider relationship; the provider manages key access. The keys, recovery information, device or software, and transaction decisions.
Main risks Provider compromise, service shutdown or bankruptcy, and account-security problems. Key loss or theft, device loss or damage, recovery mistakes, and compromise of the keys or recovery information.
Convenience Can simplify account access and trading; features and availability vary by provider. Requires you to set up and maintain the wallet. Convenience depends on wallet type and how often you transact.
Fees and device cost A custodian may charge account or transfer fees; check its terms. Hot wallets may initially be free; physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money. Transactions can also involve fees.
Asset and service fit Supported assets, safeguards, transfer options, and custody terms vary by provider. Supported assets and recovery and transfer features vary by wallet.

When might exchange custody suit you?

Third-party custody may suit someone who prefers a provider to manage access to the keys and values the provider’s account and trading services. That convenience comes with dependence on the provider’s security, operations, and terms. Account access is not a guarantee that assets will always be available.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Before relying on an exchange or other custodian, check:

  • Which assets it supports and whether you can transfer them out.
  • Who controls the private keys and what safeguards the provider describes.
  • What happens to access if service is interrupted, the provider shuts down, or it becomes insolvent.
  • Whether insurance applies to your assets and circumstances, and what exclusions or limits its terms state. Do not assume that all exchanges are insured or that insurance guarantees repayment.
  • What account, trading, and transfer fees apply.
  • The provider’s background and regulatory status in the relevant jurisdiction.

When might self-custody suit you?

Self-custody may suit someone who wants direct control and is prepared to take responsibility for key security and recovery. That responsibility does not transfer to a wallet vendor: if the keys and recovery information are lost or compromised, you may lose access.

What are hot and cold wallets?

“Hot” and “cold” describe a wallet’s connection to the internet, not who has custody. Either kind may be used in a self-custody arrangement or by a third-party custodian.

  • Effortless Asset Management: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our intuitive desktop and mobile app
  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  • Hot wallets are internet-connected and convenient for transactions, but are exposed to cyberthreats. They may initially be free, though transactions can involve fees.
  • Cold wallets are typically physical and kept offline. They are generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but are less convenient and can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Physical devices typically cost money.

A hardware wallet is one optional form of cold storage, not a complete security solution. Offline storage does not protect against physical loss, damage, theft, exposed recovery information, or user error.

What happens if you lose a device or seed phrase?

A seed phrase can restore a wallet if a key or device is lost or its hardware or software is damaged or corrupted. Store it securely and never share it. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet. Do not assume a wallet vendor or customer-support team can reset or recover a lost seed phrase.

Can you use both approaches?

Yes. Someone may use different custody arrangements for different purposes, but each arrangement retains its own responsibilities and risks. For every asset, know who controls key access, how you can move it, and what recovery route applies. A split approach is an option, not a universal recommendation.

How should you make the decision?

  1. Decide who you want controlling access. If you want a provider to manage key access, investigate its terms and failure arrangements. If you want direct control, be ready to protect and recover the keys yourself.
  2. Match the responsibility to your comfort level. Consider whether you can reliably safeguard recovery information and handle wallet setup and transactions, or whether provider-managed access better fits your needs.
  3. Verify the exact service or wallet. Confirm supported assets, transfer options, safeguards, recovery procedures, and fees before depositing or transferring crypto.
  4. Consider connectivity separately. Decide whether the convenience of an internet-connected wallet or the reduced online exposure of offline storage better fits how you plan to use the assets.

What does the SEC guidance establish?

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s “Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors – Investor Bulletin,” dated December 12, 2025, explains wallet keys, self-custody, third-party custody, hot and cold wallets, seed phrases, and custodian diligence. The bulletin says it represents the views of that office’s staff, is not a rule, regulation, or statement of the Commission, and creates no new obligations. It is general investor education, not personalized advice or a guarantee of legal protections. Custody treatment and protections depend on the assets, service, and jurisdiction; U.S. securities-law statements should not be generalized to every crypto asset or country.
