Crypto assets are not FDIC-insured, and an exchange is not automatically a bank. The right comparison depends on what you actually hold, which legal entity holds it, and what happens if that entity fails.
This is a U.S.-focused general guide, not individualized financial advice. Deposit coverage depends on the institution, account, ownership category, and applicable limits; check the terms for your specific account.

What are you actually holding?
“Money in an app” can refer to several legally different things. A bank deposit is generally a claim against a depository institution. An exchange account might contain crypto assets, cash, or a separate product such as a crypto interest account. Those balances are not interchangeable, even if one screen displays them together.

Before deciding where to keep a balance, identify the asset, the legal entity that owes or safeguards it, whether it qualifies for deposit insurance, and how you can withdraw or recover it. U.S. deposit protections do not automatically apply to fintech or exchange accounts simply because an app partners with a bank.

Bank deposits and exchange holdings compared
| Decision point | Bank or credit-union deposit | Crypto exchange custody |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | A deposit claim against a depository institution when the product qualifies as a deposit. | May be crypto assets, exchange-account cash, or another product. Identify the asset and legal counterparty. |
| Protection | Eligible deposits at an insured bank or credit union may qualify for FDIC or NCUA protection, subject to applicable rules and limits. See the FDIC deposit insurance overview. | Crypto assets are not FDIC-insured. Do not assume a bank relationship insures an exchange’s customers; check the legal arrangement and terms for any cash balance. The FDIC explains that it does not insure non-bank companies, including crypto companies: FDIC consumer guidance. |
| Risks highlighted in federal guidance | Deposit insurance addresses the failure of an insured institution within its scope; confirm eligibility and limits. | Asset-price changes and illiquidity, platform or custodian failure, withdrawal interruptions, hacking, fraud, technical problems, legal changes, and uncertainty about recovery. |
| Who manages access? | The institution administers the deposit account under its account terms. | With exchange custody, the provider manages private-key access. With self-custody, you manage the keys and recovery. |
| Yield and terms | Check the actual deposit product and current account disclosures; rates are not compared here. | Crypto interest may come from lending or other investment activity, with risks unlike an insured deposit. Review asset-use, withdrawal, custody, transfer, closure, privacy, and fee terms. |
Is crypto on an exchange FDIC insured?
No. FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits at insured banks, within applicable limits and ownership rules; it does not insure crypto assets or protect against their market-price declines. A non-bank exchange does not become an insured bank because it works with one. For exchange-account cash, do not infer coverage from the app display: find out which entity holds the funds, whose name the account is in, and whether the specific arrangement qualifies as a deposit.
Brokerage protection is different, too. SIPC coverage at a member brokerage is not bank deposit insurance, does not protect against market losses, and is not a general insurance program for crypto assets. Check current SIPC terms if brokerage holdings are relevant to your decision.

What happens if a crypto exchange fails?
An exchange is a service provider or custodian, not automatically a bank. If a third-party custodian is hacked, shuts down, or enters bankruptcy, customers may lose access to their crypto. Whether and how assets can be recovered depends on the legal arrangement and circumstances; the cited federal guidance does not establish a uniform outcome for every exchange or account.

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin advises investors to ask what happens if a custodian fails. It is SEC staff guidance, not a rule or binding Commission statement. “Proof of reserves” should not be treated as a complete audit or guarantee of solvency: the SEC staff alert says such methods can be point-in-time, discretionary in scope and assurance, and may not meaningfully show that customer balances are safely backed.

Crypto interest accounts are not savings accounts
A crypto interest account may use deposited crypto in lending or other investment activity. That creates market, company-failure, fraud, regulatory, and technical risks that differ from an insured bank deposit. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy said in its February 14, 2022 bulletin that crypto interest products are not as safe as bank or credit-union deposits, and that crypto sent to offering companies is not currently insured. The bulletin reflects staff views and is not a binding Commission statement.
Exchange custody or self-custody?
A crypto wallet does not hold coins in the way a physical wallet holds cash. It stores or manages private keys used to authorize transactions; a public key can be used to receive assets. With an exchange, the provider controls key access on your behalf. With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for safeguarding them and keeping a recovery method available.

Third-party exchange custody
Custody can make access convenient, but it leaves you dependent on the provider’s controls, operations, and account terms. Ask about insurance and what it covers, security practices, storage subcontractors, hot- and cold-wallet use, commingling, rehypothecation, supported assets, privacy, fees, and withdrawal rules.
Self-custody and hardware wallets
Self-custody shifts key management and recovery to you. The SEC custody bulletin warns: “If you lose your private key, you permanently lose access to the crypto assets in your wallet.” Hot wallets are internet-connected and convenient but exposed to cyberthreats. Cold wallets are typically physical devices kept offline and generally less exposed to those threats; the device can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. A hardware wallet may be one self-custody option, not a substitute for an insured deposit or a requirement for people who do not hold crypto.

How to choose where each balance belongs
- Separate spending and savings from investing. Identify money you may need for bills or emergencies, and distinguish it from any amount you are prepared to expose to crypto-related risks.
- Verify the institution and product. For a deposit, check that the bank or credit union is insured and that the account qualifies. For an exchange balance, identify the legal counterparty and whether the balance is cash, crypto, or an interest product.
- Read the protection and custody terms. Look for who holds the assets, whether funds can be lent or reused, what happens during a suspension or failure, and what fees or withdrawal limits apply.
- Decide who manages keys. If you use exchange custody, assess the provider and your access arrangements. If you choose self-custody, plan how you will secure and recover keys without relying on the provider.
- Match the arrangement to the time horizon. A balance needed on demand has different practical requirements from a long-term crypto investment. Consider access, price volatility, and the possibility that withdrawals or recovery could be delayed.
What the evidence does not establish
Federal consumer materials cited here explain the basic difference between eligible deposits and crypto custody, but they do not quantify comparative probabilities or expected losses for banks versus exchanges. They also do not establish the solvency, coverage, rates, or account terms of any named provider. Verify current limits, eligibility, regulations, and institution-specific disclosures before making a decision.
