A delayed or declined crypto-exchange transfer does not automatically mean your bank blocks all crypto transactions. The cause may be a bank security rule, a payment-processing problem, incorrect details, a transfer limit, or a hold imposed by the exchange. Start by identifying whether you are depositing from a bank, buying with a card, or withdrawing from the exchange: each follows a different path.
Why did my bank transfer to a crypto exchange fail?
For card and payment declines, Kraken lists several possible causes: the bank or card issuer rejected the payment, a security block, a payment-processor issue, insufficient funds, incorrect billing information, or a daily spending or international-transaction limit. Some banks block transactions to cryptocurrency platforms by default, Kraken says, but that does not establish that every bank does so or explain a particular decline. Kraken’s payment-decline FAQ, last updated May 25, 2025, recommends contacting the bank or card issuer to ask whether it rejected the transaction or applied a security restriction. Verify your billing details, available balance, and applicable limits as well. [Correction: citation markers omitted; source linked.]

A failed payment may still appear as pending at your bank. Kraken describes this as a pre-authorization hold: it says it does not claim funds for failed transactions, and that the bank usually releases the hold within seven business days, often sooner. The bank controls when the hold is released, so treat that as a typical timeframe rather than a guaranteed deadline. Kraken’s FAQ explains this specifically for payments to Kraken.

Is the transfer pending, on hold, declined, or returned?
Those statuses describe different stages. A bank’s “pending” card charge after a failed payment can be a pre-authorization hold. “On hold” may instead refer to a restriction Kraken places on withdrawing deposited funds. A “declined” payment did not complete, while a “returned” transfer was sent back after rejection. Read the exact wording in both your bank and exchange accounts before deciding who needs to investigate.

Can a bank block a crypto exchange withdrawal?
Yes, a bank can reject a withdrawal sent from an exchange, but a rejection alone does not prove a blanket policy. Kraken says some banks do not accept transfers involving crypto exchanges. Under Kraken’s process, a rejected withdrawal may be returned, and Kraken may then block that bank in its system to avoid further delays crediting returned funds. Its explanation also notes that regional availability and funding-provider rules can prevent withdrawals. These are Kraken-specific service rules, not a published list of banks or a general legal rule. See Kraken’s explanation of “Bank not allowed” and other error messages.
If your exchange shows “bank not allowed,” or a withdrawal is rejected or returned, contact the exchange using its official support channel. Ask what the status means for your account and which withdrawal methods are supported in your region. Do not assume that changing providers or routes will bypass a bank restriction; the available evidence does not establish that.

Could an exchange hold or transfer time explain the delay?
Yes. Kraken’s documentation distinguishes payment rejection from limits on when deposited money can be withdrawn. Its rules include a 72-hour withdrawal hold for certain deposit methods and a seven-day withdrawal hold for cash deposits through ACH Plaid. Those holds concern Kraken withdrawals, not a universal bank processing rule. Kraken says timing and holds vary by method and currency; check its current funding page and the instructions shown in your account.

As examples for US customers, Kraken’s funding table, last updated October 1, 2026, lists ACH (Plaid) deposits as near-instant with a seven-day withdrawal hold, and FedWire (Dart Bank) deposits as zero to one business day with no hold. Those figures are Kraken’s estimates for those listed routes, not guarantees or recommendations. Eligibility, processing time, fees, minimums, and holds vary by region and method, and Kraken says availability is limited to specific regions and information can change without notice. Use the current Kraken cash deposit options and processing times and the instructions in your signed-in account before sending funds.

A displayed portfolio value also may not equal the balance available to withdraw in a particular currency. Kraken says that a user trying to withdraw USD needs USD available; assets held in other forms may need to be converted first. This is Kraken-specific account guidance, not a bank transfer delay.
Why has my crypto deposit not arrived?
For a missing Kraken deposit, first check its status. If no status appears, Kraken says funds may not yet have reached its bank, or a required payment reference may be missing so the deposit cannot be assigned automatically. Compare your transfer receipt with the current deposit instructions, confirm the money has left your bank, and account for bank holidays. If those checks do not resolve it, contact Kraken Support. Kraken says not to contact its funding providers or payment processors directly because doing so can add delay. Its missing-deposit and withdrawal guidance also says a Fedwire deposit mistakenly sent as ACH may fail and take up to ten business days to return.

What to check before contacting support
- Identify the direction and method. Is this a bank-to-exchange deposit, a card purchase, or an exchange-to-bank withdrawal?
- Record both statuses. Note the exact wording shown by the bank and the exchange, along with the date and amount.
- Check current instructions. Confirm that the method supports your country and currency, and review the processing window, any withdrawal hold, and any required transfer reference.
- Compare the transfer receipt with the destination details. Check the account information and reference, and confirm whether the bank actually sent the funds.
- Check bank processing days. Weekends and bank holidays can affect arrival estimates.
- For a declined card payment, ask the issuer what happened. Confirm whether it rejected the transaction or applied a security block or spending limit; also recheck billing details and funds.
- Escalate through the relevant official support channel. Contact the exchange about a missing deposit or rejected exchange withdrawal; contact the bank about its own decline or pending authorization.
