In Bitcoin, only one transaction can spend a given transaction output in the accepted blockchain; a payment that has merely been broadcast is not yet confirmed or settled.
What is double spending?
Double spending means trying to spend the same funds more than once. Bitcoin transactions use outputs from earlier transactions as inputs. Once an output is spent in a transaction recorded in the accepted blockchain, it cannot also be spent by a conflicting transaction there. Bitcoin.org defines the attack as a malicious user trying to pay two recipients with the same bitcoins at the same time (Bitcoin vocabulary).

For example, someone could broadcast one transaction paying a merchant and another transaction attempting to use the same input to pay themselves. Those transactions conflict: they cannot both spend that same output in the accepted Bitcoin transaction history.
How does Bitcoin handle conflicting payments?
Bitcoin does not rely on a central mint to approve each payment. Its peer-to-peer network records transactions in blocks, which are linked into a history secured with proof of work. When transactions conflict, the network’s consensus process and accepted chain determine which spend is recorded; simply being seen first by a particular node does not guarantee that a transaction will prevail. Satoshi Nakamoto described the design as “a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network” in the Bitcoin whitepaper.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin transactions spend previously created outputs, and valid transactions use outputs that remain unspent. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains this transaction and block-chain model in its sections on the block chain and how Bitcoin works.
What does crypto double spending mean for a payment recipient?
A payment broadcast to the network but not yet included in a block has zero confirmations. It is not the same as a completed, confirmed payment: a conflicting transaction may still be accepted instead. The Bitcoin Developer Guide advises against trusting an unconfirmed payment without assessing the risk (Payment Processing).

Inclusion in a block gives a transaction one confirmation. Each later block adds another confirmation and generally makes replacing the transaction more difficult. This increases confidence, but does not make reversal risk instantly or absolutely zero: a recent block can be replaced.
How many Bitcoin confirmations are enough?
There is no single confirmation threshold for every payment. The recipient’s decision depends on the transaction’s value, the time available, and how much reversal risk they can tolerate. A low-value purchase may justify a different policy from a high-value transfer.

Bitcoin.org describes blocks as being added roughly every 10 minutes on average and notes that higher-value payments may warrant six or more confirmations. The developer guide also presents six confirmations as an approximate rule of thumb and says one confirmation averages about 10 minutes when a transaction pays sufficient fees. These are Bitcoin-specific estimates, not guaranteed timing or universal rules for other cryptocurrencies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is double spending the same on every cryptocurrency?
No. The explanation above concerns Bitcoin’s transaction model and confirmation process. Other cryptocurrencies may use different transaction structures and consensus mechanisms, so Bitcoin’s terminology and confirmation guidance should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every chain.
