Crypto Coin Balances: What Wallet Figures Include

A crypto balance is a wallet’s or service’s view of network or account records. Learn why total, confirmed, and spendable amounts can differ.

A crypto coin balance is the amount a wallet, blockchain address, account, or exchange reports as associated with it. It is a display calculated from network records or a service’s own records—not a balance field stored inside the wallet app. The figure shown as “total” may include funds that are pending, locked, or otherwise unavailable to spend immediately.

Where a crypto balance comes from

A wallet interface reads or calculates information about an address, account, or set of addresses and presents it as a balance. The underlying representation depends on the blockchain. An exchange may show a balance from its own account records rather than a direct, real-time view of an on-chain address.

This distinction matters when comparing a wallet screen with a blockchain explorer: the two may be showing different scopes or different kinds of balance, even when both figures are accurate for what they represent.

How balances work on different blockchains

UTXO systems such as Bitcoin

Bitcoin uses the unspent transaction output (UTXO) model. Transactions consume earlier outputs and create new ones. A wallet calculates a balance by adding up unspent outputs associated with keys it controls; there is not one account-balance field in the Ethereum sense. A payment can also create a change output that returns unused value to an address controlled by the wallet. A single receive address may therefore not represent every output the wallet includes in its account total. See Ledger Academy’s explanation of UTXOs.

Account-based systems and tokens

In an account-based system, the blockchain maintains account state that includes a balance. Token balances are also represented in the relevant chain’s state. Wallet software reads and displays that information; the balance is not an object held inside the app. The Federal Reserve discusses how Ethereum account and ERC-20 token balances are maintained across the participating network in its overview of tokens and accounts.

What common balance labels mean

Labels are not universal: wallets and services can define them differently. Exodus, Bitcoin Core, and Ripple documentation illustrate why the field name and provider matter.

  • Confirmed: An amount treated as confirmed under the wallet’s rules. Exodus describes its confirmed amount as the on-chain consensus amount; the confirmation threshold depends on the chain. Its documentation says most supported chains treat one confirmation as confirmed, while some require more. See Exodus’s balances model.
  • Unconfirmed: An amount associated with pending transactions. A wallet may include a pending incoming amount in a total while not counting it as spendable.
  • Available or spendable: The amount the wallet currently considers movable in a transaction. Bitcoin Core’s getbalance reference explains that spendability can depend on confirmations and wallet options. See the Bitcoin Core getbalance reference.
  • Locked or reserved: An amount withheld from ordinary spending for a protocol or wallet purpose. Exodus documents wallet reserves and locked balances; Ripple distinguishes available and frozen amounts in its balance documentation.

For that reason, do not assume a displayed total is immediately spendable. Check the wallet or service’s definitions for the specific asset and network.

How to investigate a balance mismatch

  1. Match the asset and network. Confirm that both screens refer to the same coin or token on the same blockchain. A token can exist on more than one network.
  2. Match the account scope. Check whether the wallet is grouping multiple addresses or outputs while the other screen shows only one address, or whether an exchange is showing its own account record.
  3. Compare like-for-like fields. Identify whether each number is total, confirmed, available, or spendable. Those labels can represent different calculations.
  4. Check pending activity. Look for incoming or outgoing transactions that one screen includes and the other excludes, and consider the chain’s confirmation rules.
  5. Verify the underlying records. Use the wallet’s documented tools or a suitable explorer to check the relevant transaction and address data. If the figures still differ, the cause depends on the asset and provider; a mismatch alone does not establish that funds are lost or that either display is wrong.

Which balance should you rely on?

Use the figure that answers your specific question. For a transaction, the relevant figure is generally the amount the wallet treats as available or spendable—not necessarily the total it displays. For an on-chain check, verify the correct address or account and interpret its state using that network’s model. When comparing two screens, align the asset and network, account scope, balance label, pending-transaction treatment, and confirmation or reserve rules.
