Then choose a platform-listed payment method, a plugin or hosted checkout, or a custom API integration—and verify how it handles refunds, order changes, fees, and settlement before switching it on.
Choose an integration route that fits your store
Crypto checkout is not a single feature that works the same way across platforms. The route you choose determines how customers pay, where funds go, and how much integration and ongoing maintenance your team handles.

Use a platform-listed payment method
On Shopify, review the available methods in Settings > Payments > Add payment methods. Shopify lists options including Solana Pay, Crypto.com, BitPay, DePay, OpenNode, Strike, Lunu, Bit2Me Commerce, and IBEX Pay, but their supported assets, settlement arrangements, and availability are not uniform. Search for the assets you intend to accept, then check the provider’s current terms and merchant eligibility. Shopify also advises merchants to verify that cryptocurrency payments are acceptable in their region. Shopify’s cryptocurrency payment guidance describes the platform’s listed methods and general considerations.
Use a platform plugin or hosted checkout
A provider plugin or extension can avoid building the checkout flow yourself, though you still need to configure the provider account and test order handling. BitPay documents plugins or extensions for WordPress/WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento 1 and 2, OpenCart, PrestaShop, and other platforms. It also describes hosted checkout for smaller merchants. Confirm that the relevant integration is currently available and that your business can open an account before planning around it. BitPay’s integration guidance outlines its plugin, hosted-checkout, and API routes.

Build or update a custom API integration
An API gives developers more control over how payment status, orders, and checkout are connected, but it also makes your team responsible for implementation and maintenance. Before using an older tutorial or code sample, confirm the provider’s current authentication method, endpoints, and migration requirements. This is especially important for legacy Coinbase Commerce integrations, which have a specific transition path described below.
Check the details that determine whether checkout will work
- Platform and integration: Verify that the exact store platform and version are supported, and identify who maintains the plugin or API connection.
- Merchant country and onboarding: Confirm that the provider accepts businesses in your jurisdiction and that accepting crypto is permitted for your business there.
- Asset and network: Check the precise coin and blockchain network accepted. A currency name alone may not identify a supported payment route.
- Settlement and custody: Establish whether funds settle in fiat or crypto, which currency is used, where the proceeds are held, and whether a wallet is required.
- Settlement timing and checkout: Consider how long payment confirmation and settlement take, and what customers must do to complete payment.
- Order operations: Check how refunds, partial captures, subscriptions, disputes, and order changes work. These rules can differ between payment methods from the same platform.
- Costs and upkeep: Review provider and any platform-level fees, plus the work required to keep the integration and credentials current.
Shopify USDC checkout has specific eligibility and transaction rules
Shopify documents a USDC payment option through Shopify Payments for eligible merchants. Customers must have USDC on a supported network. Depending on the merchant’s setup and region, payout can be in the merchant’s local Shopify Payments currency or, in some regions, USDC to a crypto wallet. Check Shopify’s current USDC payment documentation for eligibility, supported networks, and payout details.

The USDC flow has restrictions that matter when configuring products and order handling: USDC orders cannot be partially captured, used for subscription purchases, or disputed through the stated Shopify flow. Refunds depend on the merchant’s payout balance. If the merchant chooses wallet payout, Shopify says the merchant needs enough USDC available to refund an order. If payout is made in the selected Shopify Payments currency, the refund is funded from the Shopify Payments balance and converted to USDC.

Plan for settlement delays and manual refunds
Shopify warns that longer settlement times for cryptocurrency transactions can contribute to overselling during flash sales. Build the payment flow into inventory planning instead of assuming every crypto order settles as quickly as a standard card payment. Shopify also says there are no automatic refunds for cryptocurrency payments through its general gateway guidance: merchants need to issue refunds manually through the payment gateway. Third-party gateway fees may also apply. These are general Shopify crypto-payment cautions; the USDC flow has its own payout and refund rules described above. See Shopify’s cryptocurrency guidance.
Handle Coinbase Commerce as a migration, not a new integration
Coinbase says access to the Coinbase Commerce portal ended after March 31, 2026. That deadline has passed, so businesses with an existing Commerce setup should check their current account status and Coinbase’s transition guidance rather than treating Commerce as a new checkout option. Coinbase said funds and transaction history needed to be exported or withdrawn before the deadline.

Coinbase Business is stated to be available to businesses with a legal entity in the United States or Singapore. Merchants elsewhere were directed to an alternative provider unless their region becomes eligible. For eligible API merchants moving to Coinbase Business, Coinbase instructs them to update authentication and use Coinbase Business Payment Link API endpoints and schema. Review the provider’s current transition documentation for account-specific instructions.
Validate the checkout before launch
- Confirm fit: Record your platform, merchant jurisdiction, target assets and networks, and desired payout destination.
- Check live availability: Use the platform’s current payment-method directory and the provider’s documentation to confirm integration availability and account eligibility.
- Read operational terms: Document settlement timing, fees, refund steps, and any limits on partial captures, subscriptions, disputes, or order changes.
- Test the full order lifecycle: In a suitable test or controlled environment, verify payment status updates, order fulfillment behavior, and the procedure your team would use for a refund.
- Assign ongoing ownership: Decide who monitors payment exceptions, maintains plugins or API credentials, and checks provider changes that could affect checkout.
BitPay says merchants can receive settlement in currencies including USD, EUR, and GBP, among others; the available settlement choice and account terms should be confirmed directly with the provider. BigCommerce also documents a BitPay connection in its help center. See BigCommerce’s BitPay connection guide alongside the provider’s current integration documentation.
