The key difference is where the money comes from: a prepaid crypto card draws on funds or crypto assigned to the card, while a crypto rewards credit card uses an issuer’s credit line and is repaid later in fiat. The label alone does not tell you how a card is funded or when crypto is converted.
What’s the difference between a crypto prepaid card and a credit card?
A crypto prepaid or debit-style card uses value you supplied in advance or made available to the program. A crypto credit card uses borrowed funds from an issuer; you repay the balance later, typically in fiat. Crypto rewards on a credit card do not mean your crypto holdings are funding each purchase. Crypto.com summarizes the distinction as spending funds already held versus using credit for purchases: Crypto.com’s card explainer.

| Feature | Prepaid or debit-style crypto card | Crypto rewards credit card |
|---|---|---|
| Source of purchase funds | Preloaded funds, crypto converted for spending, or in some programs crypto collateral or another liquidity arrangement. | The issuer’s credit line. |
| When you pay | Value is already loaded or assigned to the program; the transaction draws on that value. | You repay the issuer later under the credit card terms. |
| Crypto’s role | It may be converted into fiat at top-up or at purchase, depending on the program. | It may be a rewards currency, rather than the source of funds for the purchase. |
| What the label does not establish | It does not prove the card draws directly from a bank account or that the provider holds a conventional deposit account for you. | It does not tell you the rewards rate, interest terms, fees, or repayment protections; those depend on the card agreement. |
“Debit-style” is not always the same as a conventional bank debit card. A program may use a prepaid balance, crypto collateral, or a liquidity arrangement instead of taking money directly from a bank account. Check the cardholder agreement to establish the actual funding method.

- You make funds available. For a prepaid or debit-style program, you load fiat or provide crypto or other value under the program’s rules. A credit card instead authorizes a purchase against available credit.
- The card transaction is authorized. The card network and issuer process the purchase in the merchant’s currency. A crypto-linked card may sell or convert crypto to cover the fiat amount, but the timing and rate depend on the provider.
- The merchant is generally paid in fiat. Spending crypto as the funding source does not mean the merchant receives cryptocurrency. Mastercard describes conversion to fiat before a crypto-funded payment reaches its network: Mastercard’s crypto card program page. Mastercard also notes optional stablecoin settlement in select markets; that is a network or program settlement feature, not proof that a cardholder’s individual merchant receives stablecoins.
- The transaction posts and is settled. The amount initially authorized and the amount ultimately posted can differ, for example when a foreign-currency conversion or later settlement rate applies. Review the provider’s rules for the exchange-rate source, conversion date, and transaction record.
When does the card convert my crypto to fiat?
There are two common points in the flow: conversion when you top up the card, or conversion when you make a purchase. The provider’s terms determine which applies. A purchase date and settlement date may not use the same exchange rate, so check which rate source and timestamp govern the amount charged. Crypto.com and Binance describe provider-specific card arrangements; neither example establishes a universal conversion rule: Crypto.com’s explainer and Binance Global Card information.

Does the merchant receive cryptocurrency?
Usually, no: a consumer may fund a purchase with crypto while the merchant receives fiat through the card network. The network or program may support separate settlement arrangements, including stablecoin settlement in select markets, but that does not change the ordinary cardholder purchase flow described above. Confirm the particular program’s terms rather than assuming all crypto cards convert at the same stage.
What happens to the balance, and who holds it?
“Crypto card balance” can refer to different things: fiat loaded onto a card, crypto held in a provider account, or collateral made available to support spending. The card agreement should identify the issuer, the entity holding each type of value, and any applicable protections.

For a specific U.S. example, Crypto.com’s prepaid Visa agreement effective September 1, 2026 identifies Community Federal Savings Bank as issuer. It says only USD is held on the card, while cryptocurrency is not held by the bank and is not FDIC-insured. Those statements apply to that agreement and product, not to every crypto card: Crypto.com’s U.S. prepaid Visa cardholder agreement.

Refund terms can be especially important when the purchase fee is not returned. Binance says refunds for its Global Card are typically processed within 30 business days to the Funding Account in USDC and that purchase fees are not refunded. This is a Binance-specific policy, updated September 25, 2026—not a general rule for crypto cards: Binance Global Card support information.

- Choose a prepaid or debit-style arrangement if you want purchases to draw on value you have already supplied and understand how the program converts or uses that value.
- Consider a credit card if you want to borrow for purchases and repay later, and you have reviewed its credit, interest, fee, and reward terms.
- Compare the actual agreements if crypto conversion, custody, merchant settlement, refunds, or dispute rights matter to you. Product names alone do not resolve those questions.
Availability, supported assets, limits, features, and issuer terms differ by provider and location. Binance, for example, cautions that its Global Card may not be available everywhere and that features can vary by location. Crypto spending may also have tax consequences in some countries; the applicable treatment depends on local rules, so the card’s marketing description is not tax guidance.
