A CRT is a strong choice if you want a direct analog connection and the characteristic look of a classic display. A modern TV can also work well for retro gaming when it accepts the console’s signal, runs in a low-latency mode, and—if necessary—uses a suitable scaler. Neither option is automatically faster in every setup: latency depends on the console, controller, signal processing, and display together.
CRT vs. modern TV: the practical differences
| Decision | CRT setup | Modern-TV setup |
|---|---|---|
| Signal path | Connect the console directly by analog video when the TV and console have compatible connections. | Use a compatible TV input, or put a scaler between the console and TV if the TV does not accept or handle the signal as desired. |
| Latency | A direct CRT connection avoids a modern flat-panel scaling path in the display, but console and controller latency still matter. | TV processing can contribute latency. Game Mode or Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) can reduce or manage it, while a scaler adds its own processing. |
| Picture | Provides the characteristic CRT presentation and motion appearance. | Provides a sharp flat-panel image. Scaling and processing affect the result; some scalers offer scanline and mask effects, but these are not identical to a CRT. |
| Setup considerations | Find a working set and check that its inputs match the console. | Check the console’s actual output and the TV’s supported inputs and formats; enable a low-latency mode and add a scaler if needed. |
| Often a good fit | Players who prioritize the original display presentation and already have a suitable CRT. | Players who prefer a current large display, modern connections, or a flexible setup. |
These are practical tradeoffs, not universal rankings. Results depend on the specific console, display, connection, and settings.

What input lag means for the whole setup
TV input lag describes part of the path from receiving an image to displaying it. RTINGS explains that the TV acquires the source image, processes it, and displays it; the TV’s figure is not the latency of the complete gaming system. Console or PC behavior and controller latency also contribute. See RTINGS’ explanation of TV input-lag testing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor that reason, it is misleading to say that every CRT has zero lag or that every modern TV adds a fixed number of frames or milliseconds. A direct analog CRT connection avoids the modern TV’s flat-panel scaling path, but that alone does not establish the total controller-to-screen latency of a particular setup. The reviewed sources do not establish one universal head-to-head CRT-versus-modern-TV result.

Use the TV’s low-latency mode
On a modern TV, enable Game Mode or the manufacturer’s equivalent low-latency setting. Some TVs use ALLM to switch to Game Mode automatically when a compatible source is connected. Availability and behavior vary by model, so check the TV’s own settings and verify the result rather than assuming the feature works the same way on every set.
If motion interpolation or other image processing causes unwanted latency or artifacts, try disabling it and compare the picture and response on that TV. The effect of individual settings is model-dependent.

Check compatibility before choosing a connection
Do not select a connection path based on console generation alone. Identify the output format and connector of the exact console or revision, then confirm that the CRT or modern TV supports the signal. A physical connector match does not by itself guarantee that the display accepts the signal format.
- For a CRT: Confirm the set works and has an input compatible with the console’s output.
- For a modern TV: Confirm that the TV accepts and displays the console’s signal correctly, then enable its low-latency mode.
- If direct connection is unsuitable: Consider a scaler whose documented inputs match the console’s output, and confirm that its output works with the TV.
Using a scaler with a modern TV
A retro-focused scaler can convert a console’s analog video into a digital signal for an HDTV. One example is the RetroTINK-5X Pro. Its manufacturer lists support for formats including 240p, 480i, 480p, and 576i, with digital video output. The product page specifies approximately 0.25 frames of latency in Framelock mode and approximately 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering mode. These are manufacturer specifications for the 5X Pro and its named modes—not measurements of a complete console-to-screen setup or a guarantee for every configuration.

- EXPRESSION OF MOOD – Perfectly embodies that 'don't talk to me' vibe for your office or gaming space, adding personality to any setup.

- THOUGHTFUL COLLECTIBLE GIFT – An excellent choice for adults who appreciate unique figurines, tech culture, or a good laugh.
The 5X Pro also offers adjustable scanline functions and masks that can alter the appearance of the image. These options can approximate aspects of CRT presentation, but they do not make a flat panel identical to a CRT. For the manufacturer’s current product-range context, see RetroTINK’s product site.
Before choosing a scaler, verify the exact console output, required cable, supported input format, output resolution, latency mode, and TV input. The product example is not a claim of independent testing or hands-on evaluation.

Modern-TV setup checklist
- Identify the console’s output. Check the exact model or revision, connector, and video format it produces; do not assume all versions of a console behave alike.
- Check the display’s signal support. Confirm the CRT or TV accepts the format and displays it correctly.
- Connect directly if compatible. If the TV does not handle the console’s signal as desired, select a scaler that explicitly supports that input format.
- Enable low-latency operation. Turn on Game Mode or the TV’s equivalent. If both the source and TV support ALLM, check whether it switches automatically.
- Review extra processing. If motion interpolation or another picture feature is causing lag or artifacts, try turning it off and compare on your display.
- Consider the complete chain. The console, controller, scaler, TV processing, and display all play a role; a TV input-lag figure alone is not whole-system latency.
