Neither CRTs nor LCDs are universally better for retro gaming. Choose a CRT if you want short-persistence motion and the visual behavior of an original display and can live with flicker and lower brightness. Choose an LCD if you value using a modern screen and are willing to check its latency, picture settings, and compatibility with your console’s video output.
What matters most when choosing?
Start with how you play and what you want to see. A CRT presents motion differently from an LCD, while an LCD’s responsiveness depends on the specific display and the processing settings in use. Console output and the connection between console and screen matter too: some older consoles need a scaler or adapter to work with a modern display.

- Choose a CRT for: short-persistence motion and the appearance of an original CRT display, if you tolerate flicker and lower brightness.
- Choose an LCD for: a modern-screen setup, while checking its input lag, pixel response time, Game Mode behavior, and whether your console needs signal conversion or scaling.
How do CRT and LCD motion look different?
CRTs have shorter hold time than LCDs, which can bring perceived motion closer to the ideal motion line. That comes with a trade-off: flicker and lower brightness. LCDs use sample-and-hold behavior, which improves brightness and reduces flicker but can make blur and stutter more noticeable. These are technology-level tendencies, not a guarantee of how every individual set will look. RTINGS’ motion-cadence explainer describes the trade-off.

Input lag and pixel response time describe different parts of what you experience. RTINGS defines monitor input lag as “The time it takes for a monitor to receive a signal and then display the image on screen.” Pixel response time is how long pixels take to complete color transitions. A display can have low input lag but still show motion blur because pixel transitions take time. RTINGS’ monitor input-lag methodology explains the distinction and its test approach.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
For a TV, latency reflects the whole display chain: acquiring the image, processing it, and displaying it. Processing such as motion interpolation can add lag, and Game Mode is intended to reduce it. The console, controller, connection, and display all contribute to the overall experience; a TV’s behavior alone does not describe the complete chain. See RTINGS’ TV input-lag methodology.
There is no sound universal latency number for “a CRT” or “an LCD.” RTINGS’ current monitor methodology page gives 8.33 ms as a minimum for its 60 Hz monitor input-lag test. That is context about one test method, not a typical LCD result or a CRT-versus-LCD comparison.

Can an LCD reproduce the CRT look?
LCDs can add simulated CRT effects, but scanlines alone do not reproduce every characteristic of a physical CRT. Shadow-mask appearance, color blending, and phosphor positioning also shape the look. For an analog-output console, an upscaler or adapter may be needed before an HDMI scanline generator can be used with a modern display. GamesRadar+’s feature on scanlines discusses these visual differences and the signal path.
Using a scaler with an LCD
A retro gaming video scaler can convert and scale older console signals for a modern display and may offer CRT simulation. For example, RetroTINK describes its 4K Pro as a processor/scaler supporting inputs from composite through digital, output up to 4K60, and CRT simulation. Its product page listed the device at $750.00 when accessed in 2026; price and availability can change. The product information does not establish that its simulated effects duplicate CRT motion behavior or that the complete console-to-display chain has zero lag. Check console compatibility and connections before buying. See the RetroTINK-4K Pro product page.

How to compare the displays you can actually use
Compare the specific CRT or LCD, console, and signal path you plan to use—not just the display category. For an LCD, check the resolution and refresh rate you will play at, Game Mode, and whether motion interpolation or other processing is active. For either type, consider pixel response separately from input lag.
- Motion: Do you prefer CRT short-persistence motion, and can you tolerate flicker? Or do you prefer LCD brightness and reduced flicker, accepting that blur or stutter may be more noticeable?
- Latency: Look for measurements for the exact display mode and settings you will use. Do not treat input lag and pixel response time as interchangeable.
- Image: Decide whether you want original CRT behavior, sharper pixels, or simulated effects on an LCD.
- Connections: Confirm the console’s output and the display’s inputs. Identify any scaler or adapter required to bridge them.
- Practical fit: Factor in space, size, the condition of a particular used set, and cost. These are important choices, but the cited comparisons do not quantify them across CRTs and LCDs.
If you are comparing an early 4:3 analog LCD with a CRT, the practical answer is still to compare the particular sets and full signal chains. A label such as “analog LCD” does not establish its latency relative to a particular CRT.
