Gartner’s 2026 endpoint protection research names these providers in the same market as CrowdStrike, but market inclusion is not a ranking or a guarantee that any one product fits your organization.
What counts as an endpoint security alternative?
An endpoint protection platform is software used to protect managed endpoints. Gartner’s market definition covers devices such as desktops, laptops, virtual desktops, mobile devices and servers. These platforms can combine static and behavioral analysis with controls such as device control, host firewall management and application control. The exact capabilities available depend on the product and the package being offered, so confirm the proposed scope rather than assuming every platform includes the same features.

“Alternative” does not necessarily mean a product-for-product replacement with identical coverage. One organization may need endpoint protection for a defined device fleet; another may also be evaluating detection and response, a broader XDR approach or managed detection and response. Make that distinction before comparing providers, and get the vendor to identify which capabilities are included in the specific offer.
It also helps to distinguish a product category from a purchasing decision. A platform may be relevant to your shortlist, but that alone does not answer whether its supported configurations match your devices, whether its included capabilities cover your requirements, or whether your team can operate it. Treat those as separate questions and look for evidence for each one.

Which providers belong on an initial shortlist?
Gartner’s 2026 endpoint protection research names CrowdStrike, Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks, SentinelOne, Sophos and other providers in the market. The four options below are practical candidates to investigate, not a universal ranking. Gartner’s 2024 abstract said, “All solutions in this Magic Quadrant offer effective protection against most common attacks.” That statement concerned the products covered by that report; it is not a guarantee about every configuration, deployment or organization.
| Provider or product | What the cited material establishes | What to verify for your organization |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Endpoint | Named in Gartner’s endpoint protection market material. Microsoft Learn identifies it as an EDR solution. | Entitlement, configuration, fit with your Microsoft environment and the capabilities included in the proposed package. |
| SentinelOne Singularity Endpoint | Named in Gartner market material and Microsoft Learn’s EDR integration documentation. | Supported platforms, integration requirements and fit with your deployment. |
| Sophos Endpoint | Named in Gartner market material and Microsoft Learn’s EDR integration documentation. | Current package capabilities, support and operating-system requirements. |
| Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR | Named in Gartner market material and Microsoft Learn’s EDR integration documentation. | How it fits your current security operations and broader platform strategy. |
Microsoft Learn’s integration documentation also identifies Falcon, Sophos, SentinelOne Singularity and Cortex XDR as EDR integrations and provides some operating-system support details. That information is not a complete compatibility assessment or a determination of licensing eligibility for a particular buyer. Confirm current support, agent requirements and exclusions with the vendor for every device and operating system in scope.
Other providers to include when they fit your requirements
Gartner’s 2026 abstract also lists Bitdefender, Broadcom, Check Point, ESET, Fortinet, Trellix, TrendAI and WithSecure. Their inclusion means they may be worth investigating against your requirements; it does not establish that they are suitable for your environment or rank them against the other candidates. Expand the shortlist if one of these providers better matches your operating environment, existing tools or documented needs.
How to compare endpoint security providers
1. Build an endpoint and operating-system inventory
List the systems you actually need to protect before requesting proposals. Include desktops, laptops, virtual desktops, mobile devices and servers, along with their operating systems. Gartner’s market definition spans these endpoint types, but that does not mean every provider or package supports every system in your fleet.
For each endpoint group, record the operating system and version, whether the device is physical or virtual, how it is managed, and any deployment constraints. Ask each finalist to identify supported configurations, required agents, exclusions and any dependencies. Treat an unconfirmed platform as a coverage gap until the vendor verifies it for the proposed deployment.
Make the inventory useful for comparing offers by noting quantities or user/device groupings where you can, without assuming that a vendor will license each group in the same way. Flag unusual or business-critical endpoint types so they do not disappear inside a broad “workstations” total. Ask vendors to respond against the same inventory and call out any devices they have not covered in their answer.

Do not treat an operating-system mention in an integration document as proof that your specific version, configuration or deployment is supported. Record the exact scope of any confirmation, including prerequisites or exclusions, and check it again when the proposal is updated. This reduces the risk of comparing one vendor’s verified coverage with another vendor’s general statement.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Define the protection scope you need
Write down whether your requirement is endpoint protection, detection and response, broader XDR, managed detection and response, or some combination. These labels do not establish comparable entitlements across vendors. Ask for a written mapping from each requirement to the named product, package and included capability in the offer.
- Identify the protection and response outcomes your organization requires.
- Separate capabilities you already provide through other tools from those the endpoint product must supply.
- Ask what is included in the quoted package, what requires an add-on and what is not available for the platforms you use.
- Confirm who operates each function: your security team, the provider, or another service arrangement described in the contract.
Ask each vendor to explain its answer in terms of your requirements rather than relying on product labels. If you need detection and response, for example, clarify which response capabilities are part of the proposed offer and who is expected to use them. If you are considering a managed service, make the service boundary explicit: identify the work the provider is proposing to perform and the responsibilities that remain with your staff.
Keep the comparison anchored to the package you would actually buy. A capability described in a product family, product page or demonstration is not automatically included in every offer. Note whether the vendor identifies a capability as included, optional, unavailable or still awaiting confirmation, and do not mark an unanswered requirement as satisfied.
3. Check integration and operational fit
A product’s capabilities matter only insofar as your organization can deploy and operate them. Gartner Peer Insights identifies integration and deployment, service and support, and product capabilities as comparison dimensions. Use those categories to structure vendor discussions rather than relying on a feature checklist alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMap how endpoint alerts will reach your existing security operations, who will investigate them and how response actions will be handled. During evaluation, observe the deployment effort and ask support questions that reflect your likely operating conditions. Confirm requirements and responsibilities in writing; a general product description does not establish how a particular integration or support arrangement will work in your environment.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
For integration, describe the tools and workflows that matter to your organization, then ask the vendor to explain the proposed connection and any dependencies. The goal is not simply to see that an integration exists in a list; it is to understand whether the relevant information and actions will fit your intended workflow. Document any work your team or another provider would need to do.
For service and support, compare the arrangements actually offered, not just general statements about support. Ask how the proposed support applies to the package and deployment under consideration, what your team is responsible for, and where the terms are stated. Use the same questions with every finalist so the comparison does not mistake different service boundaries for equivalent offers.
4. Consider workspace strategy, sovereignty and AI controls
Gartner’s 2026 abstract calls out “sovereignty objectives” and requirements for “AI discovery and usage control on corporate endpoints” as buyer considerations. This is market guidance, not a regulatory requirement. If either issue matters to your organization, translate it into a concrete requirement before soliciting offers.
- For sovereignty objectives, specify the relevant geographic, data-handling or operational constraints and ask the vendor to explain how the proposed service addresses them.
- For AI discovery and usage control, describe what must be identified or controlled on corporate endpoints and ask which proposed capabilities address those needs.
- Assess each candidate in the context of your broader workspace security strategy and existing tools, not as an isolated endpoint purchase.
A phrase such as “sovereignty” is not precise enough to score on its own. Document the objective that applies to your organization and request an answer tied to the actual service being proposed. Similarly, state what you mean by AI discovery or usage control: which corporate endpoints are in scope, what needs to be identified or controlled, and how you will verify that the requirement is addressed. Gartner’s mention of these priorities is a prompt for buyer evaluation, not proof that any named product meets a particular requirement.
5. Compare the complete offer and contract
Compare the full commercial offer, including contract and support terms, against your written requirements. The available material does not provide a comparable current price list or establish licensing eligibility for any particular organization. Do not infer cost, included features or entitlement from a provider’s name or from an integration listing. Request a proposal tied to your device inventory, required scope and contract needs, and document what is included.
Evaluation and contracting are part of the provider comparison, not administrative details to postpone until after a technical choice. Check the proposed term, support arrangement and any conditions that affect the deployment or continued use. Where offers differ, record the difference against the requirement it affects rather than treating unlike packages as equivalent.

There is no defensible price comparison in the cited material, so avoid relying on a generic price estimate or assuming a particular vendor will cost less. Ask for a complete offer based on the same scope and clarify how the proposal relates to your endpoint inventory, required capabilities, support needs and contract requirements. If a quote leaves an item unclear, obtain a written clarification before scoring it as covered.
Commercial comparison should include more than the headline number. Verify which product and package the offer names, which capabilities it includes, what support arrangement applies and whether any stated conditions affect the intended deployment. Compare like with like where possible; where offers are structured differently, preserve those differences in the scorecard rather than forcing them into a false equivalence.
Run a proof of concept before choosing
No universal winner or matched test across these candidates is established by the cited material. A documented proof of concept (PoC) is therefore a practical way to check whether a finalist meets your requirements in your own environment. Agree on the scope and success criteria before deployment so the evaluation measures the same things for each candidate.
- Select representative endpoints. Use devices and operating systems from the inventory, including important deployment variations. Record any platform that cannot be included and get the vendor’s explanation of its support status.
- Agree on evaluation criteria in advance. Define the protection, operational, integration and deployment outcomes you need. Set a pass condition for each one that your team can observe and document.
- Confirm the proposed package and setup. Have the vendor identify the product, included capabilities, prerequisites and support arrangement being evaluated. Do not test an unspecified or materially different offer from the one you may contract for.
- Record deployment and integration work. Note the steps your team must perform, the systems involved and any obstacles. Check how alerts fit your security operations and whether the planned responsibilities are clear.
- Evaluate against the same criteria. Apply the agreed process to each finalist and record results, limitations and unresolved questions. Avoid treating a demonstration or a vendor assertion as equivalent to an outcome verified in your environment.
- Resolve gaps before selection. Ask for written answers on unsupported devices, package boundaries, integration dependencies and contract terms. If a material requirement remains unresolved, treat it as an open risk rather than assuming it will be covered later.
A useful PoC is designed around decisions you need to make, not a broad demonstration of every available feature. Tie each test to a written requirement, identify who will observe the result and preserve the evidence. When a test cannot address a requirement, record why and decide whether a different validation method or a vendor clarification is needed.
Keep candidate evaluations comparable. Use the same representative endpoint groups, agreed criteria and recording method when practical, and note any differences in setup that could affect interpretation. A PoC does not replace commercial review or confirmation of support, package scope and contract terms. It supplies evidence about the candidate in the tested environment; it does not establish coverage for devices or configurations that were not evaluated.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by market presence alone. Gartner’s inclusion of a provider establishes relevance to the market material, not suitability, rank or fit for your environment.
- Assuming every endpoint is covered. A broad product category does not confirm support for your operating systems, device types or versions. Validate the inventory with each vendor.
- Comparing product names instead of packages. The available information does not establish equivalent entitlements. Compare written offers and clarify add-ons, exclusions and support.
- Confusing an integration listing with full compatibility. Microsoft Learn’s EDR integration information is useful evidence of listed integrations, but it is not a complete compatibility or licensing assessment for your organization.
- Overlooking operations and service. Integration and deployment, service and support, and product capabilities all belong in the comparison. A technically attractive proposal still needs a workable operating model.
- Treating Gartner’s 2024 statement as a guarantee. Its comment about effective protection against most common attacks applied to products in that report; it does not promise an outcome for every configuration or buyer.
- Letting the sales cycle define the requirements. Write requirements before comparing offers, then map each promise to a package, deployment condition or contract term.
- Assuming an integration means licensing is settled. A listed EDR integration does not establish that your organization is eligible for a particular license or package. Confirm entitlement for the proposed buyer and deployment.
- Leaving open questions implicit. If a vendor has not confirmed support, a package boundary or an operational responsibility, keep it marked as unresolved. Silence is not confirmation.
A practical decision framework
Use a written scorecard that reflects your organization’s priorities rather than a generic vendor ranking. For every finalist, capture evidence and unresolved questions across the same categories:
Best Value
- Coverage: Which inventoried endpoints and operating systems are supported, and what exclusions or prerequisites apply?
- Scope: Which required protection, detection, response or managed-service capabilities are included in the offered package?
- Operations: How will deployment, alert handling, integration and support work with your team and existing tools?
- Strategic fit: Does the proposal address relevant workspace, sovereignty and AI discovery or usage-control requirements?
- Commercial fit: Do the full offer and contract terms align with the written requirements and intended deployment?
- Validation: Did the finalist meet the PoC criteria, and are any material gaps still unresolved?
For each category, keep the requirement, the vendor’s answer, the evidence and the status together. A concise status such as confirmed, partially confirmed, not met or unresolved is more informative than an unsupported numerical score. If you do use weights or scores, set them before reviewing the final offers and explain how they reflect your organization’s priorities.
Choose only after the requirements, tested fit and offer are aligned. If two candidates remain viable, prioritize the one whose verified coverage and operating model best fit your environment—not the one with the broadest market recognition. If neither resolves a material requirement, expand the shortlist or revisit the requirement rather than treating a weak fit as a completed decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which CrowdStrike alternatives should I shortlist first?
Start by evaluating Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, SentinelOne Singularity Endpoint, Sophos Endpoint and Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR. Gartner’s 2026 endpoint protection material names these providers in the same market as CrowdStrike. That establishes candidates to investigate, not a ranking or a guarantee of fit. Bitdefender, Broadcom, Check Point, ESET, Fortinet, Trellix, TrendAI and WithSecure are also named and may be relevant if they match your requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Gartner’s 2024 statement mean every endpoint security product will protect my organization?
No. Gartner’s 2024 abstract said, “All solutions in this Magic Quadrant offer effective protection against most common attacks.” The statement concerns products covered by that report; it does not guarantee results for every configuration, deployment or organization. Validate your own requirements and environment.
How do I compare the cost of CrowdStrike alternatives?
The cited material does not provide a comparable current price list or establish licensing eligibility for a particular organization. Request proposals based on the same endpoint inventory, required scope, support needs and contract requirements. Confirm the named product, included capabilities, any add-ons and applicable terms rather than inferring cost or entitlement from a product name.
Does Microsoft Learn’s EDR integration listing prove compatibility or licensing eligibility?
No. Microsoft Learn identifies Falcon, Sophos, SentinelOne Singularity and Cortex XDR as EDR integrations and provides some operating-system support details. That is not a complete compatibility assessment or a determination of licensing eligibility for your organization. Confirm the required platforms, agents, exclusions and entitlement with the vendor.
What should an endpoint security proof of concept test?
Use representative devices and operating systems from your inventory, and agree on observable protection, integration, deployment and operational criteria before testing. Confirm that the product and package being evaluated match the offer you might contract for. Apply the same criteria to each finalist where practical, record limitations and unresolved questions, and do not treat an untested endpoint as verified coverage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are sovereignty and AI usage controls regulatory requirements?
Gartner’s 2026 abstract identifies sovereignty objectives and AI discovery and usage control on corporate endpoints as buyer considerations. That market guidance is not itself a regulatory requirement. Define the geographic, data-handling, operational or AI-control needs that apply to your organization and ask vendors how their proposed offers address them.
The Bottom Line
Shortlist providers by relevance, but choose by verified fit. Compare Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, SentinelOne Singularity Endpoint, Sophos Endpoint, Cortex XDR and any other plausible candidates against the same device inventory, capability requirements, operating model and contract criteria. Confirm support and package boundaries, then validate finalists in a documented PoC. Gartner’s market inclusion and Microsoft Learn’s integration listings can inform the evaluation, but neither is a substitute for organization-specific compatibility, licensing and commercial confirmation.
