CrowdSec detects suspicious behavior in configured logs and requests, but detection alone does not block traffic. Its Security Engine parses events and evaluates them against scenarios; the Local API turns alerts into decisions; and a separately installed remediation component enforces those decisions at a firewall, reverse proxy, web server, or supported application layer.

What is CrowdSec?

CrowdSec describes its Security Engine as “a lightweight, collaborative Intrusion Detection System (IDS) with optional Web Application Firewall (WAF) capabilities.” It is software for detecting potentially hostile behavior from configured logs and HTTP requests. Administrators can use it on an individual machine or as part of a larger deployment, depending on their log pipeline and enforcement needs. CrowdSec’s introduction describes the engine and its opt-in community collaboration.

The word “collaborative” refers to an optional community threat-intelligence contribution; it does not mean that every installation automatically shares all of its logs. Participation in the community blocklist is opt-in. The description here does not establish which fields might be transmitted in any particular configuration, so consult CrowdSec’s current privacy documentation before making decisions about data handling.

How does CrowdSec work?

The important distinction is between an alert, a decision, and enforcement. CrowdSec documents these as separate stages rather than one automatic blocking action. Its concepts documentation describes the event flow, while the remediation introduction explains how enforcement components connect.

  1. Acquire events: CrowdSec reads logs from configured services or other configured sources. The Log Processor handles those events.
  2. Parse and enrich: Parsers normalize log entries into events that detection content can evaluate.
  3. Evaluate behavior: Scenarios check events for patterns that may indicate abuse. A repeated series of failed SSH logins is one example used in the official concepts documentation.
  4. Create an alert: When behavior matches a scenario, the Log Processor creates an alert. An alert records detected activity; it is not itself a block.
  5. Apply a profile and create a decision: The Local API (LAPI) stores alerts and applies configured profiles to determine whether a decision should be made.
  6. Enforce the decision: A remediation component retrieves decisions from LAPI and applies them at its configured enforcement point.

This separation matters operationally: installing the detection engine does not by itself guarantee that a matching IP address will be blocked. The intended enforcement layer needs a compatible remediation integration, and it must be configured to consume and enforce the relevant decisions.

What do CrowdSec scenarios do?

Scenarios are YAML detection files that define how events are evaluated for a behavior pattern. CrowdSec’s scenario documentation describes filtering events, grouping them, and using leaky-bucket thresholds. In practical terms, a scenario can select relevant events, group them around a subject such as an IP address, and assess whether enough matching activity occurs within its configured logic to trigger detection.

FortiGate-60F Network Security Appliance Plus 1 Year FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection (UTP) and FortiCare Premium (FG-60F-BDL-950-12)
  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.

  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

Scenarios are detection logic, not enforcement rules by themselves. A scenario match can produce an alert; profiles and the Local API govern the resulting decision, and a remediation component is still needed to act on that decision.

Does CrowdSec block IP addresses?

It can support IP-based blocking when a decision is produced and a suitable remediation component is installed and configured to enforce it. CrowdSec’s documentation assigns enforcement to remediation components, formerly called “bouncers,” which connect to LAPI. Depending on the integration, enforcement may happen at a firewall, reverse proxy, web server, or another supported layer.

  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

Without a remediation integration at the relevant point in the traffic path, the Security Engine may detect activity and create alerts or decisions without that setup blocking the traffic. Check both the supported integration and its compatibility with the actual software version and deployment before relying on it for protection.

What is a CrowdSec bouncer?

“Bouncer” is the older name for a remediation component. CrowdSec’s official introduction says: “Remediation Components (previously called bouncers) enforce the Security Engine’s decisions by connecting to the Local API (LAPI).” The component is the part that applies a decision where traffic is handled; the Security Engine’s detection stage does not substitute for it.

Where can CrowdSec fit in a deployment?

CrowdSec documents several deployment categories, including standalone and distributed machines, centralized log pipelines, Kubernetes, containers, and WAF-only use. Those are broad patterns, not a guarantee that every integration works with every stack. The correct design depends on where relevant logs originate, where processing should run, and where a decision can be enforced. See the official documentation landing page and remediation guidance for the applicable integration.

Deployment question What to decide
Where are the events? Identify the service logs or HTTP events to acquire and whether the Log Processor runs beside those services or receives events through a centralized pipeline.
How is the Local API arranged? Choose a standalone arrangement for a machine or a distributed design where processors and the Local API have separate roles, according to the deployment’s needs.
Where must a decision take effect? Determine whether enforcement belongs at the network or infrastructure layer, or at an application-facing layer such as a reverse proxy, web server, or WAF integration.
Is there a suitable remediation integration? Verify that a supported component exists for the specific firewall, proxy, server, or application and that it is compatible with the environment.
Is centralized management or paid intelligence needed? Assess whether the deployment needs fleet management through Console or paid blocklist/threat-intelligence features; consult current vendor terms for scope and availability.

What do the collaboration and commercial offerings establish?

The community blocklist contribution is opt-in, which is distinct from running local detection and enforcement. CrowdSec also lists paid Console and threat-intelligence offerings. Its pricing page describes a Partnership Program that allows security data to be embedded in commercial offerings and used for resale or other commercial purposes. Those statements do not establish an affiliate program, referral commission, or particular contractual terms. Commercial availability and terms can change; check CrowdSec’s current pricing page for current details.

How should you evaluate CrowdSec for your stack?

  • List the services whose logs or requests you want to evaluate, and confirm that the necessary sources can be acquired and parsed.
  • Decide where the Log Processor and Local API should run, including whether the design is standalone or distributed.
  • Select the enforcement point that can actually affect the traffic you want to control.
  • Verify a remediation integration for that specific enforcement point and confirm its current compatibility and configuration requirements in CrowdSec’s documentation.
  • Decide separately whether optional community participation, centralized management, or paid intelligence features suit your privacy and operational requirements.
