Cloud saves do not automatically let you move game progress between every device or platform. A platform may sync files among devices using the same service, while cross-platform progression may depend on a separate game account or save backend. Support and behavior vary by game, so confirm the specific title supports the transfer before switching—and check that the save you want has finished syncing.
What “cloud save” and “cross-platform progression” mean
These terms describe related but different features:

- Cloud save or platform sync: A platform stores and transfers a game’s save files between supported devices using that platform’s service. The game must support the feature, and its configuration determines which devices or operating systems can use the files.
- Cross-platform progression: The game makes progress available across platforms, often through a game account or developer-managed backend. Linking accounts may be required.
Neither term promises cross-buy, cross-play, or shared progress between unrelated platform accounts. For example, PlayStation describes syncing PS5 console and cloud data to the most recent data, while Steam’s documentation explains that developers configure operating-system coverage. Those platform features have different boundaries: PlayStation cloud storage support and Steamworks Cloud documentation.

How to check whether a game will sync to another device
- Check the game’s store listing and official support page. Look for explicit cloud-save or cross-progression support for the devices and storefronts you plan to use. Steam notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud, so the feature should not be assumed: Steam Cloud troubleshooting and support.
- Identify the mechanism. Determine whether the game uses the platform’s file sync, linked game accounts, or a developer-managed backend. Account linking is not the same as copying a save file.
- Check coverage and steps. Verify the operating systems, storefronts, console generations, and devices supported. See whether you must sign in to a particular game account, link accounts in-game, or launch the game on the new platform before progress appears.
- Finish a sync before switching. Let the game and platform client upload or sync after your final session. When possible, reopen the game and confirm that the expected save is present before relying on another device.
Why progress may not appear on another platform
The game does not support the transfer
Cloud saves are title-specific. A game may have no cloud sync, or it may sync only within a particular platform service. A store listing that advertises cloud saves does not, by itself, establish that the same save works across another storefront or console family.

Platform sync and game-account progression are being confused
A platform’s cloud service may move files among supported devices without connecting those files to a separate platform account. Cross-platform progression may instead rely on the game’s own account system or backend. Epic’s help explains how account linking can make PC or mobile progress available on other devices, subject to the game and accounts involved: Epic account sync help.
Operating-system paths or settings divide the saves
On Steam, developers configure which files and paths are synced. Steamworks documents that operating-system roots and Auto-Cloud settings can affect whether saves written on different operating systems reach the same location. A game may therefore sync on one set of devices but keep saves partitioned across operating systems: Steamworks Cloud documentation.

The new device has not completed the expected sign-in or launch steps
Some games require the same linked game account on each platform, and progress may not appear until you follow the game’s linking process or launch it on the new device. Follow the title’s official instructions rather than assuming the platform account alone identifies your progress.
How to handle a cloud-save conflict
A conflict can occur when more than one device has a save that has not been synchronized—for example, after playing offline on one device. The conflict prompt may offer competing versions. Do not choose by the word “newer” alone: compare each displayed date and time with your play history, then select the file containing the progress you want to keep.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Pause before selecting either version.
- Compare the timestamps shown in the prompt with when you last played on each device.
- If the game lets you inspect progress, check which version contains the session you want to keep.
- Choose that version and allow synchronization to finish before launching or saving on another device.
Epic’s conflict guidance recommends choosing the newer file after checking that its date and progress match the session to keep: Epic cloud-save conflict help. Its account guidance also says that different progress on linked platform accounts cannot be combined; you must choose which progress to keep: Epic account sync help. Do not assume another game can merge conflicting saves.
How to reduce the risk of losing progress when changing devices
- Keep access to the old device until the new device shows the expected save.
- Use the intended linked game account on each platform and complete any in-game account-linking steps.
- After your last session, wait for the game and platform client to finish syncing; verify the save when practical.
- If you play offline on more than one device, reconnect and resolve any prompt carefully before making further progress.
- Do not treat a cloud service as a guarantee that lost or overwritten progress can be recovered. Steam says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a conflict for a player: Steam Cloud troubleshooting and support.
What developers need to account for
For developers, reliable cross-platform saves require decisions about identity, file coverage, offline play, conflicts, and version compatibility—not just uploading a file. Steamworks describes configuring paths and operating-system coverage. PlayFab’s Game Saves documentation covers synchronization, conflict resolution, and offline play, and warns that updates can arrive at different times across storefronts. Xbox’s documentation describes a game-save synchronization flow and conflict prompts. These are implementation and platform behaviors, not guarantees for every game:
