Cross-browser testing means checking more than Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. A useful test matrix also accounts for operating systems, devices, screen sizes, hardware, input methods, assistive technology, network conditions, and performance. Because testing every possible combination is impractical, define coverage around your audience and the user journeys where failure would matter most.
What should I test besides browsers?
A browser name alone does not identify the environment a person uses. Record and test the combination of browser and version, operating system, device, viewport, input method, and relevant network or hardware constraints. MDN recommends prioritizing important combinations rather than attempting complete coverage, using audience analytics when available (MDN: Introduction to cross-browser testing).
Browser build and operating system
Track the browser version alongside its operating system and device. A browser project may not behave exactly like a branded release: Playwright notes that its Chromium build can be ahead of Chrome and Edge. Use branded browser binaries when the result depends on media codecs, enterprise policies, or required extensions (Playwright: Browsers).
Viewport, screen, and orientation
Test meaningful combinations of width and height, not just a single desktop and mobile preset. Check whether content overflows, remains readable at zoom, and behaves when users scroll or rotate a device. Screen resolution, physical dimensions, zoom, scrolling, color capability, and contrast can all affect the experience (W3C: Guidelines for writing device independent tests).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hardware and device limits
Include lower-powered devices if your audience uses them. CPU and memory constraints can expose sluggish interactions, janky animation, or pages that consume too many resources. Device capabilities also vary in network access and support for extensions; the W3C device-independent testing note is older, so use it for these durable categories rather than current browser recommendations.
Input methods and accessibility
Exercise important flows with a keyboard alone and with a screen reader. Check that focus order is understandable, controls can be reached and operated, and content is available without relying on a pointer or touch gesture. Test touch and mouse or trackpad interactions where relevant. Browser accessibility and communication with assistive technologies are part of the user experience, not a separate browser brand check (W3C WAI: User Agent Accessibility Guidelines overview).

Network conditions and offline states
Test representative slow or unreliable connections and high latency when those conditions are plausible for your users. If your product promises useful offline behavior, test it explicitly. For an installed web app, include an intentional offline fallback rather than leaving users with only a generic browser error page (MDN: Best practices for PWAs).
Performance and rendering
Measure loading, input response, animation smoothness, and resource timing on the environments that matter. MDN’s general performance guide gives example guidelines of 1 second for loading, 50 milliseconds for idling, 16.7 milliseconds for animation, and 50–200 milliseconds for responding to user input (MDN: Web performance). These are contextual guidance, not universal release thresholds; set targets for your product and the journey being measured.

Installed-app and operating-system integration
For a PWA or browser-based app with installation features, check installation, screen adaptation, supported input methods, offline fallback, and expected operating-system integration. The relevant checks depend on what your app actually promises; do not treat installation as proof that the installed experience works across devices (MDN: Best practices for PWAs).
How do I build a practical test matrix?
- Set the support boundary. Agree on supported browsers and versions, operating systems, device classes, and accessibility expectations. “All browsers” is not a practical coverage target.
- Use audience and product evidence. Review analytics for browser and operating-system combinations actually used. Add combinations required by contracts or policy, plus environments used on high-impact journeys.
- Start with baseline checks. After an implementation phase, exercise changed functionality in several stable browsers, include mobile platforms, and perform quick keyboard and screen-reader checks. Expand coverage when a change is risky.
- Automate repeatable paths. Run functional checks across chosen browser builds in CI or another repeatable environment. Choose branded binaries if codecs, enterprise policies, or extensions affect the result.
- Use simulation for reach and devices for fidelity. Emulators and virtual machines can extend coverage to operating systems and device profiles without requiring every physical device. Keep real-device checks for touch behavior, lower-powered hardware, operating-system integration, and important workflows where simulation may miss details.
- Make failures reproducible. For each issue, record browser and version, operating system, device, viewport, input method, network state, reproduction steps, and expected versus observed results.
Do I need to test on real phones?
Not for every test, but real devices are valuable for the behaviors most affected by actual hardware and interaction. MDN identifies physical devices as the most accurate option for behavior and overall experience; emulators and virtual machines are useful alternatives when physical access is limited (MDN: Introduction to cross-browser testing).

| Approach | Coverage breadth | Fidelity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local browser installs | Limited to available machines and builds | High for the installed environment | Early checks and primary development platforms |
| Emulators and virtual machines | Add operating-system and device combinations without stocking every device | Useful approximation, not identical to physical hardware | Extending coverage and reproducing OS or browser issues |
| Physical phones, tablets, and computers | Limited to devices owned or borrowed | Highest of these approaches for actual device behavior and experience, according to MDN | Touch, hardware constraints, OS integration, and final checks of key journeys |
| Hosted browser or device services | Potentially broad; depends on service coverage | Depends on whether tests use real or simulated devices | Teams without an internal device lab; verify exact coverage and terms with the service |
A single phone cannot establish compatibility across devices. Choose physical devices that represent important audience segments or high-risk workflows, then use emulation and automation to cover more combinations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can screenshots help with visual checks?
For a local visual check, capture the same page and state at the target viewport in each browser environment, then compare the output for layout shifts, clipping, missing assets, and unexpected styling differences. Keep the browser, OS, viewport, zoom, and page state consistent between captures; otherwise a difference may come from the setup rather than the code.
