Choose Crimson Desert if you want a broad open-world adventure built around exploration, traversal, varied activities, and flexible action combat. Choose Dragon’s Dogma 2 if the idea of traveling with AI-controlled companions—its pawn party, even when you play solo—is more appealing. Both games are released; Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion is scheduled for October 9, 2026, as of October 7, 2026. Official feature descriptions support a taste-based recommendation, not an objective winner.
What kind of adventure does each game offer?
Crimson Desert: exploration, movement, and activities
Pearl Abyss describes Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure set on Pywel. Its world spans wilderness, cities, ruins, and different cultures, with multiple regions, quests, side activities, and resource gathering. The official descriptions also highlight climbing and gliding, making movement through the world a prominent part of the experience.

Combat is described in terms of weapons, hand-to-hand moves, and chaining attacks. Exploration and boss encounters contribute to progression. Pearl Abyss sums up its combat approach this way: “On the unforgiving battlefields of Crimson Desert, there is no single path to victory.” Pearl Abyss’s official game site and its PlayStation game page describe these features.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: a traveling party, even when playing solo
Capcom classifies Dragon’s Dogma 2 as an action RPG set in a fantasy open world. Its defining feature in the official description is the pawn system: AI-controlled characters accompany the player as traveling companions. Capcom says this lets players enjoy “a taste of adventuring in a group when playing solo.” If you want party-style travel without relying on human co-op partners, that is the clearest reason to favor Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Platforms and release timing
Both base games have launched. Their announced platform lists differ, and a platform listed for an expansion should not be mistaken for the original game’s launch list.

What the available facts do—and don’t—settle
Capcom reported more than 14 million units sold for the Dragon’s Dogma series as of March 31, 2026. That is a cumulative figure for the franchise, not sales for Dragon’s Dogma 2 alone. Capcom’s April 7, 2026 announcement also provides the upcoming expansion details.
The official feature pages do not establish comparative review scores, performance parity across platforms, current prices, game length, total map size, or the ownership requirements for the expansion. They are enough to compare the games’ stated design priorities, but not to declare a tested overall winner.
