Build the social card as an HTML page, load fonts that cover every script it uses, then capture the page with Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot(). Puppeteer captures the rendered result; the layout, suitable Indic fonts, and checks that the text displays correctly are your responsibility.
Build the preview image as a web page
Make a dedicated card page with explicit dimensions, layout, colors, and text. Open it in Puppeteer and use Page.screenshot() to save the rendered page. Puppeteer’s API documents screenshot capture, but does not prescribe a social-preview template or one universal set of dimensions. Choose dimensions to suit the destination that will display the image, and use the same dimensions in the page and capture options.

The example below assumes you have a local social-card.html file and a font file at fonts/NotoSansDevanagari-Regular.ttf. Replace the sample headline and font path with your content and the font for the target script. Install Puppeteer in your project and run the script in the same environment you intend to use for production.

</html>For a URL-based card, navigate to that page instead of a local file. Ensure the page can load its styles and font files in the rendering environment. Wait for the page and fonts to be ready before capture; otherwise a screenshot may show fallback text styling or incomplete content. Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() API documents the available capture options.
Choose fonts by script, not by the label “Indian language”
Indian languages use multiple writing systems. A font that renders Latin text—or one Indic script—does not establish coverage for another. Noto’s guidance names separate families for Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil, and Telugu. Select a family with the glyph coverage needed for the actual text in your card, then verify it in the browser runtime that will render the image.

- For a compact interface card, consider a script-specific UI family. Noto recommends UI variants for interfaces with limited vertical space; its Noto Sans Devanagari UI specimen is an example for Devanagari.
- For document-like text, a non-UI family may be a better fit. The Noto Sans Bengali specimen is specific to the Bengali script.
- For mixed Latin and Indic text, specify an intentional fallback stack and check that each text run uses a font with the right glyphs. Chromium selects and shapes fonts by text run and may attempt fallback when a glyph is missing, but fallback is not a guarantee that the result will be correct.
Chromium documents script-specific shaping and font fallback in its RenderText overview. Its Unicode overview also emphasizes: “Graphemes are not breakable!”
Preserve complete graphemes when shortening text
A displayed character can be made from multiple Unicode codepoints. Avoid truncating a headline by slicing a JavaScript string at an arbitrary UTF-16 offset: that can split a visible grapheme and damage a conjunct or vowel sign. If the card needs a character limit, use grapheme-aware segmentation, keep whole clusters, and then check how the shortened text wraps in the rendered image.

Validate the actual captured image
Include representative text from every target script in your checks. Render with the same fonts, browser runtime, and asset paths intended for deployment, then inspect the resulting PNG or JPEG—not just the HTML page in a different browser.
- Check that glyphs are present rather than displayed as boxes or replacement symbols.
- Inspect conjuncts, vowel signs, punctuation, and mixed-script runs at the final image size.
- Look for unexpected line breaks, clipped headlines, and text that exceeds the card’s bounds.
- Repeat the check when changing fonts, font-loading behavior, browser versions, or deployment environments.
These checks matter because font fallback and shaping determine the rendered result, while the screenshot API simply captures what the browser displays.
