This keeps the bubble and wording independently editable, so you can adjust the shape, text, and placement before saving a layered PSD.
Choose a built-in bubble or make a custom one
For a conventional speech bubble, start with Photoshop’s built-in Talk Bubbles shapes. Select the Custom Shape tool from the shape-tool group, then open the Shape picker in the Options bar and choose a bubble. Adobe’s tutorial for Photoshop 2020 locates the presets at Window > Shapes > Legacy Shapes and More > All Legacy Default Shapes > Talk Bubbles. That path is specific to the older interface; in a newer version, look in the Shape picker or Shapes panel if the legacy folders are arranged differently. A preset is the quickest option when its silhouette and tail direction suit the image. If you need a distinctive outline or tail, draw a path with the Pen tool or shape tools and choose Edit > Define Custom Shape to save it for reuse.
Draw and position the bubble
- Select the Custom Shape tool and choose a Talk Bubbles preset in the Options bar’s Shape picker.
- Drag across the canvas to draw the bubble. Photoshop creates it on a shape layer.
- Choose a fill color in the Options bar, then select the Move tool and place the bubble where it belongs in the image.
Because the bubble is a vector shape, you can resize or transform it without losing image quality. If the tail points the wrong way, select the shape and use Edit > Transform Path > Flip horizontal, as shown in Adobe’s tutorial.

Add editable dialogue
- Select the Horizontal Type tool.
- Click inside or over the bubble and type the dialogue. Photoshop places the wording on a type layer.
- Use the Type controls to adjust the font, size, and color, then use the Move tool to position the text comfortably within the bubble.
Keep the type layer separate from the shape layer. That way, you can revise the words or typography without redrawing the bubble, and adjust the bubble without turning the dialogue into part of the graphic. Adobe covers the editable shape-and-type workflow in Add text and shapes to an image.
Fit the bubble to the text
Make sure the lettering has breathing room on every side. If it feels crowded, enlarge or reshape the bubble, reduce the type size, or reposition the text. Resize the shape layer rather than rasterizing it, so it remains a vector object.

For a conventional bubble, ordinary type positioned over the shape is usually the simplest approach. Photoshop also supports text inside a closed shape and text along a path; those options are useful when the lettering needs to follow a particular contour. Adobe explains them in Add text along paths or inside shapes in Photoshop. In supported desktop versions, Dynamic Text’s Dynamic fit can automatically resize text to fit a selected shape or path; availability and interface details depend on the version. Save the layered file and export a copy
Save the working document as a PSD to preserve the separate shape and type layers for future editing. When you need an image to share, export or save a separate JPEG or PNG copy. Keeping the PSD means the exported image does not have to be your only version.
