Creating another Apple Account does not, by itself, replace your existing account or move its data and purchases. Apple now uses the name Apple Account for the service formerly called Apple ID; existing sign-in details still work. The important distinction is whether you merely create another account, sign out on a device, change the account used for Family Sharing purchases, or migrate eligible purchases. Those actions have different effects.
What happens when you create a second Apple Account?
You get a separate sign-in that can be used for Apple services such as iCloud and the App Store. Creating it is not the same as signing out of your existing account on an iPhone, Mac, or other device. Apple’s account-creation instructions do not say that setup automatically replaces, merges, or transfers anything from another account.

If you create the account but continue using your existing one on your devices, account creation alone does not disconnect that existing account or make its data and purchases disappear. You must take a separate action to change which account a device or service uses.
What changes if you sign out of the existing account on a device?
Signing out changes the account connected to that device. Apple says this also signs you out of iCloud, the App Store and other media services, iMessage, and FaceTime. iCloud information remains in iCloud, but is removed from the device unless you choose to keep a copy when prompted. Services that may be turned off include Find My, iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and Messages in iCloud.

Before signing out
- Wait for recent iCloud changes to finish syncing; check iCloud.com or another device if you need to confirm that information is available.
- Keep an up-to-date iCloud backup and make an archive or copies of information stored in iCloud.
- Confirm you can access information that is not synced to iCloud.
- Read the device’s prompts carefully and decide whether to keep a local copy of information on the device.
If you only want to stop using selected iCloud features, change those individual settings instead of signing out of the entire account.

Will your old App Store purchases move to the new account?
No—not simply because you created a new account. Apple has a separate purchase-migration feature, and eligibility is not universal. Among its requirements, both accounts must be set to the same country or region for purchases. Check Apple’s current purchase-migration overview and migration steps before acting.

After a migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for Media & Purchases on Apple devices and apps. iCloud data does not migrate with purchases, so retain access to any secondary-account data you still need. Apple also warns that deleting the secondary account after migration means losing access to its purchases.

Is Family Sharing a better option for a family?
Often, yes: Apple recommends that each family member use their own Apple Account, with Family Sharing used for eligible shared services and purchases. Sharing does not apply to every purchase or subscription; see how Family Sharing works and Apple’s advice to give each family member their own account.
If you change the account used for purchase sharing, family members may lose access to purchases and subscriptions associated with the previous account. Apple says this purchase-sharing account can be changed once every 90 days. Its instructions are at Use a different Apple Account to share purchases with Family Sharing.

How to choose the right action
| What you want | What to do | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| A separate sign-in, without changing your current device setup | Create another Apple Account | The account is created; creation alone does not sign the existing account out of devices or transfer its data and purchases. |
| To use a different account on one device | Sign out, then sign in with the other account | That device disconnects from services tied to the old account. iCloud data remains in iCloud but is removed from the device unless you keep a copy. |
| To share eligible purchases or subscriptions with family | Use Family Sharing with each person’s own account | Access depends on what is eligible and on the account selected for purchase sharing. |
| To put eligible past purchases under another account | Check and follow Apple’s purchase-migration requirements | Only eligible purchases are affected; iCloud data does not migrate, and the secondary account loses Media & Purchases use on Apple devices and apps. |
Creating the account and avoiding a setup snag
Apple lists account creation on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, Windows through Apple Music or Apple TV, and the web. Setup involves providing an email address or eligible sign-in identifier, verifying it, creating a password, choosing a country or region, and configuring two-factor authentication. Payment-method requirements and age confirmation can vary by creation method and region. If the App Store does not show “Create New Apple Account,” Apple says to make sure you are signed out of iCloud. Follow Apple’s current creation instructions for the method you are using.
