Crash-avoidance technology can make a collision repair more expensive when cameras or other sensors need replacement or calibration. At the same time, some systems prevent crashes and reduce claims in the crash types they address. The cost question has two parts: how much a claim costs when a crash happens, and how often claims happen in the first place. That does not mean every driver saves money overall.
Why can a minor-looking repair involve sensor calibration?
Driver-assistance systems rely on cameras, radar and other sensors whose position and operation matter. A windshield replacement can affect a forward-facing camera; crash damage can affect sensors; and automakers may require calibration when a sensor is removed, replaced or reinstalled. The work that looks routine from outside the vehicle can therefore involve additional checks.

Calibration requirements and procedures vary. They can call for trained technicians, specialized equipment, a suitable workspace and up-to-date software. Whether a specific repair requires calibration depends on the vehicle and the work performed; the cited sources do not establish one universal procedure or price.

In a 2023 IIHS survey, nearly 500 owners who had recently had front crash prevention, blind-spot detection or driver-assistance cameras repaired answered questions about their most recent repair. About half reported issues with the repaired feature afterward. Among respondents whose repair involved windshield replacement, about two-thirds reported post-repair issues; among those whose repair was required because of crash damage, nearly three-quarters did.

- When the product is working, the sensor emits ultrasonic waves. When encountering an obstacle, the ultrasonic waves are reflected. The sensor receives the reflected signal and transmits it to the control box. Through calculation, the control box obtains the distance between the vehicle and the obstacle, and reminds the driver to pay attention through the display and sound, etc., to avoid danger. It is a good helper for us to drive the car!
- 1: When reversing, activate the rear 4 sensors and the front 2 sensors to detect and alarm. During normal driving, when braking, the 4 sensors in front of the car are activated to assist the driver to safely pass through narrow passages. When you release the brake, the parking sensor will work for about 15 seconds before stopping.
- 2: The product alerts the driver through sound, numbers, and light bars at the same time.
- 3: Probe behind the car to prevent collision, probe in front of the car to prevent rubbing.
- 4: On the display, there are 8 light bars representing each sensor, allowing the driver to distinguish the orientation of obstacles.
These figures describe owners who had a feature repaired, not all drivers with driver-assistance technology. They point to a repair-quality and process concern; they do not show that calibration itself causes defects. IIHS Senior Research Scientist Alexandra Mueller said most of the more than 3,000 owners contacted had never needed a feature repair, while some owners who had needed one found that problems were not always resolved easily.
How can the technology save money if repairs cost more?
Insurance losses reflect both claim severity and claim frequency. Severity is the amount needed to settle a claim and can serve as a proxy for repair cost. Frequency measures how often claims occur. Sensors can raise the cost of a collision repair, increasing severity; crash prevention can reduce the number of claims in relevant crash categories, lowering frequency. IIHS-HLDI describes overall losses as the product of those two measures.

IIHS reported in 2023 that automatic emergency braking reduced police-reported rear-end crashes by 50 percent. That result is evidence of a real-world safety benefit, not a promise for every vehicle, driver or situation. IIHS also reports real-world crash reductions associated with front crash prevention, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot detection and rear crash prevention. Benefits vary by system and crash type, and findings for one feature should not be assumed to apply to another.

IIHS-HLDI’s March 2026 summary says safety benefits can stack when features are bundled, but the effect depends on the bundle and vehicle studied. Even when a system lowers claims in the crash categories it addresses, the available evidence does not establish a universal net savings for every owner, vehicle, insurer or combination of features.

Why do repair-cost headlines show only half the picture?
IIHS reported in August 2026 that average vehicle repair prices had risen more than 40 percent since 2020, attributing that figure to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That price measure does not count repairs avoided because a vehicle did not crash, so it cannot by itself show the total economic effect of crash-avoidance technology.
A 2023 IIHS article used a simple $250 windshield replacement as an example and separately reported an HLDI finding that vehicles with front crash prevention were more likely to have glass claims of $1,000 or more, with calibration likely accounting for much of the difference. Those are historical illustrations, not current quotes or a prediction of what a particular repair will cost.

- Easy to Use: When the vehicle is engaged in reverse gear, the reversing radars system automatically enters the detection working state.
- Accuracy: 30-250 centimeter-level display accuracy, accurately display the distance of obstacles, stop the vehicle in time.
- Sound Alarm: The "BiBiBi" buzzer will give a step-by-step alarm prompt, the closer the distance is, the faster the alarm sound will be.
- Reliable Quality: Dual CPU design, quick response, support probe self-check function, abnormal status prompt, preventing reverse collision caused by probe damage.
- Easy Installation: Flush mount design with drill bit for easy drilling on car bumper. It is compatible with 12 V vehicle in the market.
What should you ask after windshield work or crash damage?
- Ask the repairer whether the vehicle manufacturer requires calibration for the work being done.
- Ask whether the required calibration was completed and whether the invoice documents the procedure and any resulting system checks.
- Ask the insurer or warranty provider how the repair and any follow-up visit are covered.
- If a warning light appears or a feature behaves unexpectedly after the repair, report it to the repairer and ask what inspection or follow-up is appropriate.
There is no universal shop, price or coverage rule established by these sources. A vehicle-specific repair requirement and the terms of your policy or warranty determine what applies to your case.
What these systems do—and what they do not do
Features with similar-sounding names have different jobs. NHTSA describes forward collision warning as detecting a potential collision and alerting the driver; automatic emergency braking applies the brakes when a forward collision is imminent. Blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning address different conditions. These are driver-assistance functions, not a substitute for attention or control.
