cPanel is the browser-based control panel for managing a hosting account’s domains, website files, email, databases, and security. To get started, sign in at your host’s cPanel address, learn where the key tools are, then work through your site, email, HTTPS, and backup setup. The steps below follow cPanel’s current Meridian interface where noted, but your host may use a different theme or disable some features.
What cPanel does—and what may differ on your account
cPanel describes its interface as “the main page for the cPanel account user.” It brings together tools for domains, email accounts, website content, SQL databases, and other web services. Your hosting provider controls which interfaces and features are available, so labels and options can vary. cPanel: The cPanel Interface
The current Meridian theme groups tasks into six hubs: Websites, Email, Files, Databases, Security, and Performance. It can also include a Dashboard with account information and suggested actions, Guided Setup for domains, websites, and email, and a Command Palette for finding tools and workflows. These are Meridian features—not a guarantee that every cPanel account uses that theme. cPanel: The cPanel Interface and Meridian
Some accounts display an Onboarding Assistant after the first login. Depending on the host and account settings, it may offer WordPress creation, Sitejet Builder, backup restoration, or an option to explore the account. If it does not appear, use the regular navigation and search for the relevant tool. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel

How do I log in to cPanel?
- Get the cPanel address and account credentials from your hosting provider. The documented HTTPS format is your domain or server IP followed by port 2083—for example,
https://example.com:2083orhttps://192.0.2.1:2083. Use the actual domain or IP supplied by your host. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel - Open that address in a browser and sign in with the username and password provided for cPanel. If the address or credentials do not work, ask the host to confirm them; account access is managed by the provider.
- On the home screen, identify the sections for your immediate tasks. In Meridian, use the hubs or Command Palette; in another theme, use the available categories or search.
Where do I upload my website files?
Use File Manager to upload, edit, or delete files on the server. Before uploading, confirm the document root—the folder that serves files for the domain you intend to update. A hosting account can have more than one domain, and each may use a different document root. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel
- Open File Manager from the Files area or your theme’s navigation.
- Locate the document root for the correct domain. If you are not sure which folder serves that domain, check the domain configuration in cPanel or ask your host before replacing files.
- Upload the site files into that document root, then check the domain in a browser. Avoid deleting or overwriting files until you know whether they belong to a live site.
How do I create a cPanel email account?
Open Email Accounts to create, manage, or delete mailboxes. In Meridian, the Email hub may also summarize mailbox counts, storage, forwarders, and autoresponders. Availability and limits depend on your hosting account. Creating a mailbox does not, by itself, configure an external mail app; use the host’s mail-server settings for that step. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel cPanel: The cPanel Interface and Meridian

- Open Email Accounts in cPanel.
- Choose the option to create an account, select the domain, and enter the mailbox name and password. Follow any storage or password requirements shown by your host.
- Save the account. To use it in a separate mail application, obtain the incoming and outgoing server details from your provider.
How do I install WordPress with cPanel?
cPanel documents two routes: use WP Toolkit, if your host enables it, or install WordPress manually. Some accounts also offer WordPress creation in the Onboarding Assistant. Follow the route available in your account rather than assuming every cPanel installation includes WP Toolkit. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel cPanel: How to Install WordPress with WP Toolkit
- WP Toolkit: Open WP Toolkit and follow its installation flow to choose the domain and configure the site.
- Manual installation: Follow cPanel’s documented manual route, including setting up the database and entering its connection details during WordPress configuration. cPanel: How to Install WordPress with WP Toolkit
If WordPress reports a database connection error, check that the database name and password in wp-config.php match the database credentials for the account. cPanel: How to Install WordPress with WP Toolkit
Should I use Sitejet Builder or WordPress?
These tools serve different workflows; the right one depends on how you want to build and edit the site, and which features your host has enabled. cPanel documentation covers Sitejet Builder and WP Toolkit as ways to create a website, but it does not establish one as universally better or more portable. cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel cPanel: How to Install WordPress with WP Toolkit
| Option | What it does | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Sitejet Builder | Provides a visual site-building and publishing workflow. | Confirm it is enabled. Publishing sends the design to the domain’s document root; inspect existing files before confirming because publishing can delete them. |
| WordPress with WP Toolkit | Installs WordPress through a cPanel tool when the host provides it. | Confirm WP Toolkit is present and choose the correct domain for installation. |
| Manual WordPress installation | Sets up WordPress without relying on WP Toolkit. | Follow cPanel’s manual installation instructions and have the correct database credentials ready. |
Before publishing a Sitejet site, check the target document root for existing files. If cPanel prompts you to confirm replacement, do not proceed unless you intend to replace what is there. cPanel: How to Create a Website with Sitejet

How do I enable SSL and HTTPS?
Open SSL/TLS Wizard to select domains and follow the available certificate workflow. Depending on provider configuration, your account may offer AutoSSL with Let’s Encrypt; other setups may present certificate purchase or installation options through the cPanel Store. Do not assume that every host uses the same certificate process. cPanel: SSL/TLS Wizard
In Meridian, certificate status and security actions may also appear on the Dashboard or in the Security hub. Check the status for the domain you want to protect, and contact your provider if the relevant certificate or AutoSSL controls are missing. cPanel: The cPanel Interface and Meridian

If your provider enables it, Backup Wizard can create a full account backup or partial backups, and can restore portions from a partial backup file. A full backup cannot be automatically restored through cPanel: full restoration is a WHM function, so contact your hosting provider for help. The tool may be absent if the provider has not enabled it, and a backup can fail when the account is near or over its storage quota. cPanel: Backup Wizard
- Open Backup Wizard and choose the backup or restore action you need.
- Select a full or partial backup according to what you need to preserve. Follow the on-screen prompts to create or restore the selected material.
- Check that the operation completed and that the backup file is available. Keep a copy somewhere outside the same hosting account so it is not your only copy.
What should I set up first?
A practical order for a new hosting account is to confirm the domain, put the site in the correct location, establish email if needed, secure the domain, and verify a backup. Use the tools your host exposes; some accounts combine several of these steps in Guided Setup or the Onboarding Assistant. cPanel: The cPanel Interface and Meridian cPanel: Getting Started in cPanel
