To find out whether Cox has a network problem where you live, open Cox’s official outage page, enter your service address (include the unit number and ZIP code if you have them), or sign in to your Cox account. The outage map shows nearby service disruptions that could affect your connection. An address-specific result from Cox is the only reliable way to confirm an outage at your home. A search engine result, a social media post, or a neighbor’s report cannot tell you the live status of your line.
Step 1: Check Cox’s outage map for your address
Cox’s outage page is built around three questions customers commonly ask: “Is there a Cox Internet outage?”, “Is there a Cox outage in my area?”, and “Is there a Cox outage map I can view?” The page answers all three through an address lookup or through your account.

- Open Cox’s official outage page from a device that is still online, such as a phone on cellular data. Your home connection may be the one that is down, so avoid relying on it.
- Enter your full service address, including the unit number and ZIP code if applicable. Alternatively, sign in to your Cox account to view outage information tied to your service.
- Read the result. If Cox lists a disruption for your address, the page shows the outage details and any restoration update that has been posted.
A nearby outage listed on the map may still affect your connection even if the listing does not name your street. Treat the map as the authoritative status for the network, and treat your own line checks as the way to narrow down what is happening locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 2: If Cox reports an outage
When Cox confirms a network event, its guidance is to leave your equipment alone. Do not reset or reboot your modem or gateway during the outage, because Cox warns that doing so can cause additional problems while the network is being repaired. Restarting the device does not speed up Cox’s repair work and can complicate the restoration when service returns.

- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
Cox states that it is working to restore network service and that updates will be posted as they become available. You can follow those updates in three ways:
- Reload the outage page for your address to see new status information.
- Use SmartHelp on Cox.com or in the Cox app for outage details and automated troubleshooting.
- Enable text alerts by submitting a mobile number through MyAccount outage alerts or the Cox app, so you receive a message when service is restored.
Cox’s public guidance does not publish a restoration time for general outages, and its FAQ directs customers to SmartHelp for address-specific details, including an estimated restoration time where one is available. Any time estimate you see should come from that address-specific tool at the moment you check, not from a general article or an older screenshot.

- ⚠️ COAXIAL CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT FIBER: This modem works ONLY with Internet delivered through coaxial cable (the round cable with screw-on connector). Even if you have Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox service, verify you have their CABLE internet service, NOT their fiber optic service. Check your wall connection before purchasing. Will NOT work with fiber internet (Verizon FiOS, AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber), DSL, satellite, or 5G home internet. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchasing.
- ⚠️ NO WiFi, NO Voice, NO Router Features: This device ONLY connects to your cable line and provides ONE Ethernet port. It does NOT create WiFi networks, has NO phone/voice capabilities, and cannot connect multiple devices without a separate WiFi router.
- 🔧 REQUIRED FOR SETUP: (1) Cable internet service (not fiber), (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation call. Without a router, you can connect only ONE device via the single Ethernet cable included.
- 💰POTENTIAL RENTAL FEE SAVINGS - While some providers have reduced or eliminated modem rental fees, this modem can still provide cost savings and performance benefits. Check with your provider about current rental fees before purchasing.
- DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY - Supports cable internet speeds UP TO 1 Gbps with advanced DOCSIS 3.1 performance. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and multiple devices when paired with your WiFi router.
Step 3: If Cox does not list an outage
If the outage map shows nothing for your address, the problem is more likely local to your home or account. Work through these checks in order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Payment status. Confirm that your Cox account has no outstanding balance or suspension, since service can stop for account reasons that look like a network failure.
- Connectivity on another device. Test a second device on the same Wi-Fi network and, if possible, a device connected directly to the gateway by Ethernet. If every device fails, the problem is likely at the gateway or the line. If only one device fails, the issue is probably that device’s Wi-Fi settings.
- Cables and outlets. Check that the coaxial cable is firmly seated at the wall and gateway, that the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet, and that the outlet or power strip has not tripped or lost power. Look for a blown fuse or tripped breaker if other devices in the home are also off.
- Gateway placement. Make sure the gateway is not buried in a cabinet or near heat sources, which can cause intermittent drops.
- SmartHelp. Use SmartHelp on Cox.com or in the Cox app to run automated troubleshooting. It can guide the next steps based on what your account shows.
These checks help you separate a home problem from a network problem. They do not prove that Cox has an outage, and a clean result from them does not rule out a fault further up the line. If the problem persists after these steps, contact Cox support through SmartHelp so a technician can review your line.

Check with your ISP to confirm you have cable (coaxial) service before purchasing.
- 📞 DATA ONLY - NO PHONE SERVICE - This modem does NOT support telephone or voice service of any kind. If your internet plan includes phone service or you need VoIP calling, you must purchase a separate voice-capable modem or VoIP adapter. This device handles internet data only.”
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.

- ⚡ DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY: Latest cable standard with 32x8 channel bonding for reliable multi-gig speeds. Backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 networks. Eliminates monthly modem rental fees (typically $14-20/month). For CABLE internet only - verify compatibility with your cable provider.
Comparing the two paths
The two checks answer different questions, so it helps to run them in the right order.
| Check | What it establishes | What to do next | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cox outage map or account status | Whether Cox has identified a reported network disruption for your address or nearby area | If an outage is listed, follow the update and leave equipment alone. If none is listed, move to local checks. | Reflects Cox’s own status at the moment you check. Does not diagnose a problem inside your home. |
| SmartHelp and local checks | Whether the problem is likely in your payment status, devices, cables, power, or gateway placement | Fix any local cause you find. If the problem persists, use SmartHelp or contact Cox support. | Not a substitute for Cox’s account-specific outage status. Local checks do not confirm or rule out a network-wide event. |
Staying connected during an outage
If you depend on the connection for work or school, Cox’s outage page points to two options. Cox Hotspots are free for Cox customers to use, and Cox states there are more than 4 million of them. That figure comes from Cox’s own outage guidance, and the page does not show a publication year for it, so treat it as Cox’s current claim rather than an independently verified count.

Cox’s outage guidance gives you a reliable way to check your own address and clear instructions for what to do during an outage. It does not publish outage frequency, average duration, or historical outage data for its service areas, and the materials available for this article do not establish those figures. If you need that history for a decision about service, ask Cox directly or check its published service status information at the time you need it.
