COVID-19 Tests Compared: Rapid Antigen Tests vs. PCR Tests

Rapid antigen tests provide a quick result, while PCR and other NAATs are more likely to detect SARS-CoV-2. Learn how to interpret a negative result and choose a test.

Rapid antigen tests are faster and convenient for home use; PCR tests, a type of NAAT, are more likely to detect SARS-CoV-2. A single negative antigen result does not rule out infection. Choose based on how quickly you need an answer, how important diagnostic confidence is, and whether you recently had COVID-19.

How antigen tests and PCR tests differ

Antigen tests detect proteins from the virus. PCR tests detect viral genetic material and are one kind of nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). CDC says NAATs, including PCR, are more likely to detect the virus than antigen tests. CDC testing overview CDC clinical overview

Decision point Rapid antigen test NAAT, including PCR
What it detects Viral proteins (antigens). Viral nucleic acid; PCR is a NAAT method.
Typical result time Usually 15–30 minutes, according to CDC guidance. Lab-based tests may take up to three days; point-of-care NAATs may be quicker.
Detection Less likely than most NAATs to detect infection, especially without symptoms. More likely than antigen tests to detect the virus.
Access Self-tests are available for home use and through online and retail sellers. Often collected by a provider and sent to a lab, though some tests are performed at the point of care.

CDC describes NAATs as the “gold standard” for COVID-19 tests, while noting that antigen tests are less likely to detect infection, particularly in people without symptoms. CDC testing guidance

How to interpret an antigen result

A positive result

CDC says positive antigen results are accurate and reliable. CDC testing overview Follow the product instructions and contact a healthcare provider if you may be eligible for treatment or need advice about your circumstances.

A negative result

One negative antigen test cannot rule out infection. CDC cites FDA recommendations to take two antigen tests 48 hours apart if you have symptoms, or three tests 48 hours apart if you have no symptoms. Follow the specific test’s instructions; a NAAT may be an alternative when a more reliable diagnosis matters. CDC testing overview CDC self-testing guidance

Which test should you choose?

Choose an antigen test for a quick home answer

An authorized at-home antigen self-test is practical when speed and convenience matter. CDC says these tests usually return results in 15–30 minutes. Treat a negative as preliminary and use the product’s repeat-testing schedule rather than relying on one result.

Consider a NAAT when confidence matters

A NAAT, such as PCR, is a reasonable option when a more reliable diagnosis is important, including after a negative antigen result when symptoms or circumstances leave concern. A clinician or testing site can advise whether a lab-based or point-of-care test is available. Lab turnaround may be up to three days, while point-of-care NAATs can be faster. CDC testing overview

If you tested positive in the past 90 days

NAATs may continue to detect viral material for up to 90 days after infection. This interval describes possible detection, not how long a person is infectious. Reinfection can still occur during that period, so a positive NAAT may need to be interpreted in light of the timing of your prior infection. CDC recommends antigen testing in the relevant symptom scenarios for people with a positive test in the past 90 days; consult its current guidance or a clinician if you are unsure which scenario applies. Treatment for eligible people needs to begin within a few days of symptom onset. CDC outpatient guidance advises using a NAAT such as PCR when possible to support a reliable diagnosis without delaying treatment. CDC treatment guidance
