In Counter-Strike 2, an entry fragger takes first contact, support players help make that contact count, lurkers apply pressure away from the main group, and AWPers contest sightlines with the AWP. These are flexible team conventions, not fixed classes or an official Valve role system: players can trade responsibilities as the round plan and situation change.
What the four roles do
Role names describe responsibilities a team may assign for a particular round or plan. They are useful shorthand for coordination, but they do not guarantee a particular kill count or require one player to perform the same job every round.

Entry fragger: make first contact and create space
The entry fragger is usually the first player into contact at a site or contested area. ESL describes the entry as “The first point of contact. The head of the spear” in its Counter-Strike role guide. The goal is to challenge the defense and create space or information for teammates to act on.

An entry does not have to win every opening duel to contribute. If the push can follow the contact, use the information, and trade the entry’s death, the first player may still have helped the team gain ground. The role is about initiating a coordinated move, not simply being the player who gets the first kill.

Support: set up the push and enable follow-up
Support players help teammates execute the plan with utility, timing, and follow-up. Flashes and smokes can help an entry take a duel or cross a dangerous sightline; boosts are another example of team-enabling utility mentioned by ESL. A CS:GO role table in an academic paper also describes support players as using utility to cover and aid an entry push, and trading kills. That is historical terminology rather than a claim about a required CS2 lineup.
Support is not synonymous with a low-frag job. The useful question is whether the player’s actions give teammates a better chance to take space, stay alive, or trade. A flash thrown too early or a teammate too far behind to follow may not help the entry; good support timing makes the first contact actionable.

Lurker: create pressure away from the main group
A lurker operates apart from the main group to gather information, exploit a gap, catch a rotation, or punish opponents pushing away from the main action. ESL’s guide emphasizes patience, timing, and reading how opponents rotate; a Steam Community CS2 role and playstyle guide likewise describes catching rotations and punishing pushes away from the pack.
The separation is a trade-off, not a rule about a fixed distance or a specific time to move. A lurker who applies pressure at the right moment can constrain defenders or give the team useful information. If the player is detached when the main group needs help, however, that group may be left short of support. The lurker’s timing should serve the shared plan.

AWPer: control sightlines with the AWP
An AWPer specializes in the AWP and uses positioning and sightlines to seek an opening pick or make an angle difficult for opponents to cross. ESL notes that game sense and positioning matter alongside aim. The Steam Community guide distinguishes between aggressive AWP play for opening picks and more passive play holding an angle.
An academic role table about CS:GO describes AWPers as holding long angles and seeking important kills; this is useful background on the term, not a current CS2 rule. A team does not need to field a dedicated AWPer every round. Whether someone takes the role depends on the plan and circumstances.

How the roles work together
On one possible coordinated attack, the entry makes first contact, support uses utility and stays positioned to follow or trade, an AWPer contests a relevant sightline, and a lurker applies pressure elsewhere or looks to punish a rotation. This is an example of how the responsibilities can complement one another, not a mandatory sequence or a universal four-player setup.
The map, side, economy, round plan, and opponents’ behavior can change which jobs matter and who performs them. A player may have more than one responsibility, and a team can adjust its assignments as the round develops. ESL recommends practicing the chosen role, communicating plans, and remaining flexible.

How to coordinate the roles in practice
- Agree on the first contact: identify who is expected to lead into the contested area so teammates can time their follow-up.
- Connect utility to action: communicate when a flash or smoke is coming and make sure the entry and follow-up players can use it.
- Keep the lurker’s pressure relevant: coordinate the detached player’s timing with the main group’s move rather than treating separation as an independent mission.
- Give the AWPer a purpose: decide whether the player is seeking an opening pick or holding a sightline that matters to the plan.
- Adapt responsibilities: if the round state changes, communicate who can cover the missing task instead of relying on rigid role labels.
These conventions are explained in an ESL guide published in 2023 and community role guides; they are not a Valve-prescribed taxonomy. The academic terminology cited above concerns CS:GO, so it should be read as historical background rather than a statement of current CS2 rules.
