Could Vagus Nerve Stimulation Help New Skills Stick?

One controlled language-learning study found faster vocabulary recall and a 24-hour retention benefit with cervical stimulation. The finding is promising, but narrow and not a basis for consumer use.

Possibly—but the clearest direct evidence is narrow. In one controlled language-learning study, cervical transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) was linked to faster vocabulary recall during training and better recall on a test 24 hours later, without stimulation. That is evidence of short-term retention in a selected group, not proof that VNS helps ordinary learners retain any skill for months or years.

What does it mean for a new skill to “stick”?

Doing better while practicing is not the same as retaining what you learned. A useful test of whether a skill sticks measures performance after practice has ended and some time has passed—ideally without stimulation during the test. The directly relevant language study included a 24-hour delay; it does not establish longer-term retention.

What the language-learning study found

A 2024 double-blind, sham-controlled study in Scientific Reports examined a five-day second-language vocabulary program involving highly selected career linguists training at the U.S. Department of Defense’s premier language school. The paper tested both auricular and cervical forms of non-invasive VNS. Its reported accelerated vocabulary recall during training on days 2–4 and the 24-hour retention benefit were associated with cervical stimulation, not a general finding that any VNS device improves learning. The final retention test was taken without stimulation. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

The researchers used Xen by Neuvana for auricular stimulation and gammaCore for cervical stimulation. Those devices were used as part of an experimental protocol; the finding does not show that owning either device, or using it without the study’s protocol, reproduces the result. The study also reported effects on fatigue and focus measured with the Air Force Research Laboratory Mood Questionnaire. Those self-reported outcomes do not change the central limitation: the learning result came from a particular task, population and short follow-up.

Why the result may not generalize to other skills

VNS studies differ in stimulation route, timing, task, participants and outcome. A result in vocabulary learning cannot automatically predict performance in speech perception, reward-based decisions or motor practice.

Study and learning domain Stimulation and participants Outcome and retention evidence
Second-language vocabulary, Scientific Reports (2024) Both auricular and cervical approaches were tested in a five-day protocol with highly selected career linguists; the reported recall benefit was associated with cervical tcVNS. Faster recall during training and a benefit at a 24-hour test without stimulation.
Speech-category learning, npj Science of Learning (2020) Non-native Mandarin tone-category training; stimulation was paired with learning. Enhanced category learning and retention of correct stimulus-response associations only for easier-to-learn categories. Read the study.
Go/no-go reinforcement learning (2020) A randomized crossover experiment with 39 healthy participants, 23 of them female; taVNS was tested during a reinforcement-learning task. Stimulation reduced learning in this task, a counterexample to the claim that VNS reliably enhances learning. Read the UCL Discovery record.
Short-term motor practice, The Journal of Physiology (2026) Transcutaneous auricular stimulation during short-term motor practice. Cortical motor maps changed, but behavioral motor learning did not improve. A neural change is not the same as better performance or retention. Read the study.

These studies do not support a single, dependable learning effect. Even when a neural measure changes, it does not by itself show that a person learned more, performed better or retained a skill longer.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The positive language result is promising as a research finding: under one controlled protocol, cervical tcVNS was associated with faster vocabulary recall and a benefit still measurable after 24 hours without stimulation. The evidence does not establish a population-wide effect for everyday learners, a months- or years-long benefit, or a consumer protocol that people can safely and reliably use for learning.

A 2024 systematic review of 29 neurorehabilitation studies, including animal models and human stroke studies, described varied methods and trends toward improved motor outcomes in controlled human research. It also noted severe adverse events related to surgery in invasive VNS studies and the need for further comparisons. This is a distinct clinical rehabilitation context, not proof that stimulation improves general learning. Read the systematic review.

What FDA approval of Vivistim means

The FDA announced approval of the MicroTransponder Vivistim Paired VNS System on August 27, 2021. It is a prescription system intended to treat moderate-to-severe upper-extremity motor deficits associated with chronic ischemic stroke when paired with rehabilitation. The FDA described a clinical study involving 108 patients at 19 U.S. and U.K. sites in the context of that stroke-rehabilitation indication. The agency says Vivistim is not approved for use outside its intended indication; it is not approval of VNS for healthy people seeking a learning or cognitive-enhancement benefit. See the FDA announcement.

In that announcement, then-acting director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health Office of Neurological and Physical Medicine Devices Christopher M. Loftus, M.D., said: “People who have lost mobility in their hands and arms due to ischemic stroke are often limited in their treatment options for regaining motor function”. The statement concerns stroke rehabilitation, not enhancement in healthy learners.

Should you try a VNS device to learn faster?

The available evidence does not justify buying a consumer stimulator or using a prescription device to improve learning. The language study tested particular devices within an experimental protocol, while Vivistim has a specific prescription stroke-rehabilitation indication. These are not interchangeable uses, and the studies do not establish a general-purpose dose or safe consumer routine. Anyone considering stimulation for a medical condition should discuss it with a qualified clinician rather than extrapolate from learning experiments.
