It would not carry a satellite into orbit: the rocket would still have to provide the acceleration needed to reach orbit. A 2019 report described the idea as a research concept supported by computer simulations, not a tested launch system.
How would a steam balloon satellite launch work?
The proposed arrangement is a balloon-assisted first stage. Buoyant lift would raise the satellite and its launch vehicle above the ground into thinner air; a rocket would then take off from that altitude and perform the remaining work of reaching orbit. The balloon is a way to begin the rocket flight higher up, not a substitute for orbital launch.

Futurism’s August 22, 2019 report on work being investigated by a team at the Finnish Meteorology Institute says simulations suggested the concept might be feasible. The report gives no altitude, balloon dimensions, payload mass, rocket design, or details about the simulations, so it does not establish what a working system could carry or how much performance it might save. Why use steam instead of hydrogen or helium?
The report contrasts steam with earlier balloon-launch ideas using hydrogen or helium. It presents lower gas expense as a reason to consider steam and identifies hydrogen’s combustibility as a safety concern. Those are motivations described in the article, not independently verified comparisons: it provides no gas prices, cost model, or engineering analysis of the different options.

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- VOYAGER – 1.5 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 1.38 x 1.77 x 6.70 inches.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
What benefits were proposed—and what remains unproven?
The article raises the possibility of a smoother ride, recovering and reusing equipment, and reducing environmental impact. It does not report passenger-acceleration measurements, a recovery or reuse test, fuel accounting, or a lifecycle emissions assessment. These are potential advantages to investigate, not demonstrated results.
Assessing the proposal against conventional ground launches or hydrogen- and helium-balloon concepts would require evidence on several fronts:
Rank #2
- Model Kit
- May Require Paints and Glues to Assemble
- Accurate Scale Model
- Detailed Instructions Provided
- Decals/Transfers Included
- The cost and handling requirements of each lifting gas.
- Safety implications, including hydrogen flammability.
- How much rocket performance could be saved by starting at altitude.
- Whether the balloon and launch equipment could be recovered and reused.
- The total environmental impact of the complete launch system.
The 2019 report provides no quantitative comparison on these points.
Has the steam-balloon launch concept been tested?
Futurism reported on August 22, 2019 that the concept had not been tested and that computer simulations supported its possible feasibility. The accessible reporting establishes that status at the time; it does not establish whether the project later advanced, was demonstrated, or ended. Its present-day status is unresolved.
