Possibly—but Sony’s rules make bulk buying harder in theory, not demonstrably impossible. Sony Store Japan’s 2026 PS5 Pro offer requires a Japan-registered PlayStation account, Japanese residence and at least 60 hours of qualifying PS4 or PS5 play during a fixed two-year window. Sony limits applications to one console per account and says it will use a lottery if eligible applications exceed planned stock. Those requirements may deter casual or automated scalping, but Sony has not published results showing whether they reduced resale activity or prices.
How Sony Japan’s 2026 PS5 Pro application works
The rules apply to a specific Sony Store Japan offer for the PS5 Pro, model CFI-7100B01—not to PS5 Pro sales worldwide. Sony’s 2026 application notice sets these conditions:

- The applicant must live in Japan and use a Sony account registered in Japan for PlayStation online services.
- That account must have at least 60 hours of PS4 and/or PS5 gameplay accumulated while signed in between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026 at 23:59.
- Each Sony account may apply for one console.
- If eligible applications outnumber the units planned for the offer, Sony will allocate consoles by lottery rather than simply rewarding the fastest checkout.
- Applications close October 7, 2026 at 23:59. Sony expects to contact selected applicants from around October 26; selected buyers must complete an online Sony Store purchase by November 2, 2026 at 11:59.
The playtime window closed on September 27, 2026. Someone who had not met the threshold by then cannot add later playtime to that stated period. Sony lists the offer’s suggested price as ¥137,980 including tax.

Why the rules could make scalping harder
The requirements create friction before a buyer can enter. A reseller cannot qualify simply by creating accounts shortly before the offer: each account needs a substantial history of qualifying gameplay, and the applicant must meet the Japan account and residence conditions. The one-console-per-account cap also limits the advantage of submitting many applications through a single account. If demand exceeds planned stock, a lottery reduces the edge that a fast script or checkout connection might have in a first-come sale.

These are plausible deterrents, not proof that scalpers were excluded. A determined reseller might use accounts that already qualify or sell a console after receiving it. Sony’s notice does not quantify circumvention, explain enforcement outcomes, or report how many successful applicants intend to resell.
What the rules do not establish about buyer protection
Sony’s application notice describes eligibility and allocation; it does not report the number of available consoles, applications, winners, resale listings or resale prices. Without those outcomes, it is not possible to tell whether the method reduced scalping, increased the chance for ordinary buyers, or changed the secondary-market price. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the process may make speculative bulk buying less convenient, but the published rules alone cannot show whether it protected buyers in practice.
The same eligibility burden can keep genuine customers out. People outside Japan, people without a Japan-registered account, and people who did not reach the playtime threshold during the fixed window cannot apply through this offer. That may exclude new owners, returning players and people who use their consoles less often, even if they would keep the PS5 Pro for personal use. Sony has not stated how many legitimate buyers are affected.

How this compares with Sony’s limited-edition allocation
Sony has used an application process with a possible lottery before. Its Japan page for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Special Set describes a separately numbered collector product limited to 12,300 units worldwide. That is precedent for application-based allocation of a scarce console, but it is not the same offer: the 30th Anniversary set was a limited collector edition with its own conditions, while the 2026 offer covers the standard PS5 Pro.
Which PS5 Pro price applies?
Price figures refer to different moments and offers. Sony’s September 2024 Japan launch announcement gave the PS5 Pro a recommended price of ¥119,980. The Sony Store Japan application notice lists ¥137,980 including tax for the 2026 offer. The earlier launch figure should not be mistaken for the listed price of this later application route.
Sony describes the PS5 Pro as offering features such as advanced ray tracing, sharper images on 4K televisions and high-frame-rate gameplay. PlayStation Japan provides a PS5 Pro compatibility guide for software and hardware. Those product details may help a buyer decide whether the console suits them, but they do not demonstrate that the allocation rules work against scalping.
