Could Mars Have Supported Life? The Evidence Scientists Need to Find

Ancient Mars may have supported microbial life, but habitability is not proof. Here’s what Perseverance’s Sapphire Canyon sample shows—and what scientists still need to test.

Yes. Ancient Mars had environments that could have supported microbial life, but no life has been confirmed there. The strongest recent clue is a set of features in a Perseverance rock sample that scientists describe as potential biosignatures—observations that deserve further testing, not proof of organisms. To assess them, researchers need to combine geological context, textures, mineralogy, chemistry and organic compounds, while checking whether nonliving processes could explain the same evidence.

What does “could have supported life” mean?

In astrobiology, a habitable environment is one with conditions that could allow life as we know it to exist. It is not evidence that life actually arose there. On ancient Mars, rivers, lakes and deltas, water-altered minerals, organic matter and potential sources of chemical energy make some environments plausible candidates for habitability.

Scientists therefore distinguish between habitability—whether a place had suitable conditions—and life detection—whether evidence establishes that organisms were present. Mars has evidence relevant to the first question. The second remains unresolved.

What is the strongest recent clue?

The Cheyava Falls rock and Sapphire Canyon core

In July 2024, NASA’s Perseverance rover collected the Sapphire Canyon core from the Cheyava Falls rock in the Bright Angel formation, in an ancient river-valley setting within Jezero Crater. NASA describes Neretva Vallis, the associated ancient river valley, as about 400 meters wide. The setting matters because water-laid sediments can preserve traces of past environments.

A peer-reviewed Nature paper published September 10, 2025, describes organic-bearing mudstone and distinctive mineral, chemical and textural associations in the sample. The authors say the observations warrant consideration as potential biosignatures. That is a cautious scientific interpretation: the features may be consistent with biological activity, but the paper does not establish that life made them.

What “potential biosignature” means

NASA defines a potential biosignature as “a substance or structure that might have a biological origin but requires more data or further study before a conclusion can be reached about the absence or presence of life.” In other words, it is a clue with possible biological relevance, not a confirmed fossil or a life detection.

Researchers still need to reconstruct how the rock formed and changed, and to test whether ordinary mineral precipitation, alteration or other non-biological chemistry could produce the observed pattern. The return of samples for study in Earth laboratories would offer a stronger opportunity to investigate those processes; the Nature authors describe it as the best opportunity to understand the features.

What other Martian evidence tells us—and what it cannot tell us

Ancient water and sediments

NASA summarizes evidence that early Mars had rivers, lakes and deltas. Jezero Crater was selected as a Perseverance landing site in part because its ancient lake and delta deposits could preserve traces of past microbial life. More recently, a September 2026 NASA report on Jezero’s Margin Unit described evidence for multiple aqueous systems and differing rock histories. That context cautions against treating Jezero as a single, simple lake environment; it does not itself provide evidence that life existed.

Organic carbon in Gale Crater

In 2022, NASA reported that Curiosity measured 200–273 parts per million of total organic carbon in mudstone from an ancient lake setting in Gale Crater. NASA described the sampled Yellowknife Bay mudstone as approximately 3.5 billion years old. Organic carbon can provide feedstock for prebiotic chemistry and potentially biology, but it can also come from nonliving sources. Its presence is not proof of life.

An unusual carbon-isotope result

NASA also reported an unusual carbon signature in Curiosity-drilled rocks in 2022. An isotope pattern can help researchers compare possible origins, but an anomaly alone does not identify its cause. Paul Mahaffy, former principal investigator of Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars laboratory, cautioned: “We’re finding things on Mars that are tantalizingly interesting, but we would really need more evidence to say we’ve identified life.”

What evidence should scientists look for?

No single molecule, mineral or image can establish that life existed. A persuasive case would require multiple observations that reinforce one another and survive tests against plausible non-biological explanations.

Evidence to examine What researchers need to establish
Geological setting Whether the rock formed where liquid water, usable energy and relevant chemical ingredients were available, and what happened to it afterward.
Preservation Whether the sediment and minerals could preserve organic material or textures over geological time, and whether later alteration could have erased or mimicked a signal.
Morphology and texture Whether structures and spatial patterns fit a biological explanation better than mineral precipitation, alteration or other abiotic processes.
Mineralogy and chemistry Whether minerals and elements occur together in patterns consistent with biological chemistry, and whether nonliving reactions can produce the same associations.
Organic molecules and isotopes What carbon-bearing compounds are present, how they are distributed and what their isotopic patterns indicate, while accounting for meteorites and geological chemistry.
Independent confirmation Whether different kinds of measurements support the same interpretation, ideally with detailed laboratory analysis of returned material.

Jezero’s sedimentary record is a reason to search there, not a guarantee that signs of life were preserved. Likewise, the textural evidence in the Bright Angel findings is part of a combined case to investigate, not a stand-alone verdict.

Why the Sapphire Canyon result is not proof of life

Rover instruments can identify patterns and characterize samples in place, but the observations still need interpretation. The same mineral or chemical feature may have more than one origin. To move from a potential biosignature to a stronger conclusion, scientists need to establish the sample’s geological history, examine the spatial relationships among its features and test whether abiotic processes can account for them.

Earth laboratories can apply more detailed measurements to returned material than rover instruments can carry out on Mars. The authors of the 2025 Nature paper say that studying returned samples, including Sapphire Canyon, would provide the best opportunity to understand the processes behind the reported features. That is a path to better testing—not a claim that the sample has already demonstrated ancient life.

How to read future Mars-life headlines

  • “Habitable” means conditions may have been suitable for life; it does not mean life was present.
  • “Organic” means carbon-containing chemistry, not necessarily biology.
  • “Potential biosignature” means a feature merits further study because it might have a biological origin.
  • “Life detected” or “confirmed fossil” would require evidence strong enough to distinguish biological origins from credible non-biological alternatives. The findings described here do not meet that standard.
