Spaceway-1 was not reported to have exploded. In January 2020, however, Boeing and DirecTV judged that a December battery anomaly created a significant risk of cell rupture when the satellite next entered Earth’s shadow. The FCC therefore authorized an emergency move to a disposal orbit before eclipse season began.
What Spaceway-1 was
Spaceway-1 was a Boeing-built High Power 702 communications satellite operated by DirecTV. Launched in 2005, it supplied backup Ka-band capacity over Alaska and occupied the geostationary orbital slot at 138.9° west longitude. SpaceNews reported a mass of 6,080 kilograms and a design life of 12 years.

What failed in December 2019
Spaceway-1 suffered a major anomaly that caused what DirecTV described in its January 19, 2020 Federal Communications Commission filing as “significant and irreversible thermal damage” to the batteries.

Boeing concluded that the damaged cells could not be guaranteed to withstand the pressure and operating conditions associated with eclipse operations. The company’s assessment, quoted in the filing, was that “there is a significant risk that these battery cells could burst.” Neither the filing nor the other contemporaneous reports gave a numerical probability of failure.

Why eclipse season created a deadline
While sunlight reached the spacecraft’s solar arrays, DirecTV could keep the payload switched off and avoid using the compromised batteries. During an eclipse, Earth blocks the sunlight and a satellite normally relies on stored battery power. That made the next eclipse season the dangerous operating condition.
DirecTV’s filing said the risk made it urgent to fully de-orbit and decommission Spaceway-1 before eclipse season began on February 25, 2020. The company had roughly one month from its January filing to complete an operation that normally would have taken considerably longer.

What DirecTV asked the FCC to authorize
On January 19, 2020, DirecTV Enterprises requested Special Temporary Authority for emergency operations. The request covered moving Spaceway-1 away from its 138.9° west longitude position and waiving the usual requirement to deplete the spacecraft’s propellant before disposal.

- Move it out of the operational geostationary belt: Controllers would use the remaining propulsion capability to raise the satellite above the geostationary arc.
- Dispose of it under an emergency waiver: The normal fuel-venting sequence could not fit the eclipse-season deadline.
NASA’s Aeronautics and Space Report for fiscal year 2020 records that the FCC granted the authority on January 19 because of the unexpected battery thermal damage.

Why the fuel waiver mattered
SpaceNews reported that about 73 kilograms of bipropellant remained. Comparable satellites normally require two to three months to vent residual propellant, while Spaceway-1’s available window was about one month. Requiring complete fuel depletion first could therefore have left the damaged spacecraft approaching eclipse season in its operational neighborhood.
Where the satellite was supposed to go
The planned destination was a disposal, or “graveyard,” orbit approximately 300 kilometers above the geostationary arc. Satellites in geostationary orbit appear fixed over one longitude because they orbit at the same rotation rate as Earth. Retired spacecraft are moved above that belt so they no longer occupy the most valuable operational orbital region.

In this case, the higher orbit was also part of the emergency risk-reduction plan: it removed Spaceway-1 from the active GEO belt before the batteries would be forced to support eclipse operations.
Could a satellite battery really burst in orbit?
Yes. Spacecraft batteries are exposed to repeated charge and discharge cycles, thermal changes and the vacuum of space. A severe thermal event can damage cells and their internal materials. If a damaged cell cannot safely tolerate the pressure and electrical conditions of a recharge cycle, it may rupture. Boeing’s statement concerned that specific failure mode in Spaceway-1’s damaged cells.

That assessment does not establish that a large, cinematic explosion was inevitable. It identifies a potentially catastrophic spacecraft failure that operators wanted to avoid by removing the need for eclipse battery use.
Did DirecTV customers lose service?
No customer outage was reported. Spaceway-1 was being used as backup capacity, and DirecTV terminated its payload operations as part of the disposal response. The company said customers were not affected.
Quick Recap
What is known—and what is not
- Established: a December 2019 anomaly caused irreversible battery thermal damage; Boeing assessed a significant risk that cells could burst during eclipse operations; DirecTV sought emergency authority; and the FCC granted it on January 19, 2020.
- Established: the planned disposal orbit was about 300 kilometers above the geostationary arc, with about 73 kilograms of bipropellant remaining.
- Not established: a numerical probability that the batteries would fail.
- Not established: that Spaceway-1 actually exploded. The available records describe a precautionary disposal maneuver, not a confirmed explosion.
