A boron-carbon-nitrogen (BCN) film has been reported to work as an atomically thin p-type semiconductor in transistors, addressing a persistent gap in two-dimensional electronics. The reported devices are a laboratory result, not a commercial chip: manufacturing hurdles—including high growth temperatures and contact losses—still stand between the material and practical integration.
Why p-type materials matter for thin transistors
Two-dimensional semiconductors attract interest because their thin form could support compact electronic devices. But useful p-type materials, which conduct through positively charged holes, have been harder to find than materials suited to electron transport. A transistor technology needs reliable control of charge, so finding a workable p-type option is an important research goal.

What the BCN study reports
Electronics For You reported on October 6, 2026, that a University of Tokyo-led team headed by Vincent Tung developed wafer-scale films of boron carbon nitride. The reported method introduced carbon into boron nitride through vapor-based epitaxial growth, controlling the supply of boron, nitrogen and carbon to limit carbon clustering while preserving the underlying structure. The report says films were produced at wafer scale, including on patterned silicon chips. Electronics For You’s report attributes the findings to a Nature paper with DOI 10.1038/s41586-026-11047-9.

The team reportedly fabricated and tested 224 transistors under ambient conditions. Electronics For You reports an on-to-off current ratio of approximately 100 million to one and says the material remained stable in air under the reported conditions. These are results attributed to the reported study, not general performance benchmarks for BCN or two-dimensional transistors.

What the result does—and does not—establish
The report describes a research advance in making and testing a p-type, atomically thin material at wafer scale. It does not establish that BCN has been incorporated into a commercial processor, that it outperforms other candidate materials, or that it is ready for routine chip manufacturing. The accessible account does not provide a like-for-like comparison across materials on measures such as contact resistance, minimum feature size or wafer uniformity.
The reported results therefore support a narrower conclusion: BCN is a promising research-stage candidate for p-type transistor devices. They do not show that it already enables smaller or lower-power consumer electronics.

What still makes manufacturing difficult
- Metal contacts: The report identifies contact optimization as necessary to reduce performance losses where metal connects to the semiconductor.
- Device dimensions: The transistors still need to be made smaller for the material to meet the demands of denser chip designs.
- Growth temperature: Electronics For You reports a growth temperature of about 1,000°C as an integration concern. Such heat could damage components already present during chip fabrication, limiting where this process can fit into a manufacturing sequence.
The report discusses vertical stacking and denser, lower-power chips as possible future directions if these challenges are resolved. Those are prospective applications, not demonstrated outcomes of the reported devices.
How to interpret the headline performance figures
An on/off current ratio describes the difference between a transistor’s current in its on and off states; a high ratio indicates strong switching in the tested device. The approximately 100-million-to-one figure is reported for this study, whose devices were tested under ambient conditions. It should not be read as an industry-wide benchmark or as evidence by itself that a material is ready for production. Device scaling, contact performance and compatibility with manufacturing conditions also matter.
