VCOD-15, an engineered strain of the marine bacterium Vibrio natriegens, reduced five pollutants to 2% of their starting concentrations in reported laboratory and contained wastewater and soil experiments. That is a promising result, not proof that the microbe can clean an open-ocean oil spill: the study did not demonstrate an ocean release or field cleanup, and complete mineralization remains unfinished work.
What VCOD-15 was designed to break down
The 2025 study by Cong Su and colleagues engineered VCOD-15 to target five pollutants: biphenyl, phenol, naphthalene, dibenzofuran and toluene. These are compounds that can occur in complex pollution settings, but the reported experiments focused on those named targets; they do not establish that the strain can remove every component of crude oil or remediate every oil-contaminated site.

What the experiments found—and what they did not
The reported work moved from flask tests to tests in industrial wastewater using activated-sludge bioreactors, and to saline soil in a pot array. Across the described experiments, concentrations of the five target pollutants fell to 2% of their initial levels. This is a concentration result from those experimental settings, not an oil-spill cleanup rate measured at sea or on a shoreline.

- ZORBENT IS THE SAFEST, FASTEST SPILL ULTRA ABSORBENT POWDER EVER! Does this sound familiar – running late, disaster strikes! You are staring at a giant disgusting pet mess and massive vomit all over the floor? Zorbent to the rescue! Gone in seconds with no residue, dust or odor. Keep reading!
- 16X MORE ABSORBANT than other powders, heavy bags of clay or cat litter. Zorbent works on all surfaces - tile, carpet, concrete, steel, wood, even porous and rough surfaces. Easily removes all liquids like water, juice, urine, vomit, blood, BBQ sauce, oil and a lot more.
- ZORBENT IS ENVIROMENTALLY SAFE AND NON-TOXIC – Zorbent was originally developed to help clean up the Rocky Flats Nuclear plant in Colorado, removing 1.3 million cubic meters of waste. The formulation had to be 100% environmentally safe, non-toxic, non-hazardous, and non-irritating. That same formulation safely cleans up household messes today.
- SUPER EASY TO APPLY AND REUSABLE – Just pour, mix and sweep! Zorbent’s propriety formula quickly encases and soaks up all liquids, leaving surfaces clean and dry. Mix until the mess is absorbed then sweep. Zorbent is the ONLY reusable spill power! Keep using until the powder is fully absorbed. Each 5 qt jug absorbs up to 1 gallon.
- ZORBENT IS LIKE HAVING A PERSONAL CLEAN-UP GENIE in every 5 qt container! Never say “Oh No!” again. Just take out Zorbent and put it to work, and in a jiffy, the surface is clean, dry, dust and odor free. Store an extra container in your garage and car and always have the Genie handy. Proudly made in the USA.
VCOD-15 converted the target pollutants into salicylic acid, catechol and benzoic acid. Other bacteria present in the wastewater or soil then metabolized these intermediates. The reported pathway therefore does not show VCOD-15 alone converting all target material completely to harmless end products. An outside researcher said further metabolic engineering would be needed for complete mineralization.
Has the engineered microbe been tested in the ocean?
The reported tests were in flasks, a wastewater bioreactor and a saline-soil pot array—not an open-ocean oil spill. Study author Hongzhi Tang described a proposed use in which VCOD-15 would treat wastewater or soil inside a closed container and be recovered at the outlet with filtration. That is a contained-treatment concept, not evidence of successful open-environment deployment.

- Universal spill kit provides two absorbent socks, 15 absorbent pads, an LDPE disposal bag, and a pail for use in the containment, cleanup, and disposal of water-based and oil-based nonacid liquids on land; 5-gallon maximum absorption capacity
- Two 4' absorbent socks with polypropylene skins and filled with polymeric foam to absorb liquid
- Socks are flexible to fit tight spaces, wrap around corners or machinery, and encompass spills to form a barrier that helps keep liquid from spreading
- 15 absorbent perforated pads made of chemically inert polypropylene and heat-bonded for strength
- 5-gallon polyethylene pail has a locking lid and handle for storing and transporting spill containment supplies
This distinction matters because oil-spill bioremediation can also use naturally occurring microbes without releasing an engineered organism. In its account of the Exxon Valdez response, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency described adding nutrients to encourage bacteria already present to degrade oil. The 1989 account concerned a small-scale feasibility test and an approved proposal for shoreline application; it was not a test of VCOD-15.

Why containment and ecological effects remain open questions
The reported strain carries a chloramphenicol-resistance gene. Its presence is a relevant safety consideration for any deployment, alongside whether the organism could persist outside a treatment system and how it might affect native microbial communities. The study author’s proposed filtration step is an intended recovery measure, not proof that containment would be reliable in real-world use.
The EPA identifies persistence beyond the application site and effects on native microbial communities as unresolved concerns for open-release uses of engineered microbes. In a July 2026 assessment, the U.S. Government Accountability Office also described wider obstacles to environmental use, including limited testing infrastructure and standards, regulatory uncertainty and public concerns. These sources describe U.S. context; requirements and oversight can differ by jurisdiction.

Is VCOD-15 available for cleanup?
No. The GAO reported in July 2026 that it had identified no commercially available engineered microbes for waste cleanup. VCOD-15 should therefore be understood as research-stage technology, not a product that communities, companies or spill responders can currently buy and deploy.
Moving from contained experiments to practical use would require more than showing that target concentrations fall. Important questions include whether treatment works on realistic pollutant mixtures, whether the intermediates are fully mineralized, how the strain can be reliably contained and recovered, and what ecological and regulatory evidence is required for a specific application.

How to interpret the promise
VCOD-15 is notable because one engineered strain was reported to reduce five named pollutants in several experimental settings. The findings support further investigation of contained treatment, particularly for wastewater or contaminated soil. They do not establish that the strain is safer, more effective or less costly than mechanical recovery, nutrient-based bioremediation or other approaches; the available sources do not provide a head-to-head comparison.
