Possibly, but there is no confirmation from AMD or Valve that a chip called Gainsborough is intended for Steam Deck 2. Reports have connected the codename to a possible future Deck, while the proposed specifications and timing remain unverified leak claims.
What is AMD Gainsborough?
Gainsborough is a reported AMD chip codename. Digital Citizen says the name appeared in AMD driver material and that a separate claim based on shipping records also circulated. Those reported artifacts do not establish what product the chip is for. Digital Citizen

PC Gamer reports that Moore’s Law Is Dead linked Gainsborough to a possible Steam Deck 2. That is a reported connection, not an announcement by AMD or Valve. PC Gamer

It could, but the connection is unconfirmed. Valve says it partnered with AMD on the custom APU in the Steam Deck it sells today; AMD has also described historical semi-custom APU work with Valve. Neither statement identifies Gainsborough or confirms the hardware for a successor. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page and AMD’s corporate filing establish the existing relationship, not a Gainsborough product plan.

What specifications and release timing have been rumored?
Reports attribute Zen 6 CPU architecture, RDNA 5 graphics, TSMC N3P manufacturing, and a late-2027 or 2028 timeframe to leaks. AMD and Valve have not confirmed these details as specifications or a release date. They should be treated as speculation, not as a Steam Deck 2 announcement. PC Gamer and Digital Citizen
How does the rumor compare with the confirmed Steam Deck?
There are not two confirmed products to compare. Valve’s current hardware page describes the Steam Deck’s custom AMD APU as using Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 graphics. Gainsborough’s architecture, process, performance and availability remain unverified reports.

What would count as a meaningful next-generation upgrade?
A faster chip alone may not meet Valve’s stated bar for a successor. Steam Deck designer Pierre-Loup Griffais told PC Gamer: “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that.” The comment describes Valve’s desired scale of improvement; it does not confirm Gainsborough or any successor specifications. PC Gamer
