Possibly, but not because AI servers use the same chips as every car. The two industries compete for some shared manufacturing capacity and supply-chain resources, while relying on different mixes of components. The evidence points to pressure on particular parts—especially some memory and foundational chips—and to risks that vary by supplier and vehicle, not a universal shortage of cars.
Why an AI boom can affect car production
AI data centers need large quantities of semiconductors: advanced logic, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and chips for power, networking and other foundational functions. Cars use their own mix, including memory, controllers and power devices. These are not interchangeable products, but they can depend on overlapping manufacturing capacity and supply-chain resources.

The scale of AI infrastructure investment helps explain why the competition matters. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) projects more than $4 trillion in global data-center infrastructure investment through 2028, including up to $2.8 trillion in semiconductors. Those are projections, not completed spending or a forecast of automotive shortages. SIA’s 2026 industry overview also says one AI server rack contains more than 4,500 packaged chips, with chips accounting for 95% of its value.
The important distinction is where pressure lands. A tight supply of a particular memory type, for example, does not mean every microcontroller or power chip is scarce. Nor does demand for AI accelerators directly displace a specific automotive controller. The exposure depends on the component, the suppliers that can make it, and whether automakers have qualified alternatives.

Which automotive chips face the clearest pressure?
| Chip or supply area | Role in vehicles or AI infrastructure | What the evidence indicates |
|---|---|---|
| DRAM, including DDR4 and LPDDR4 | Memory used in compute-heavy vehicle systems such as cockpits and ADAS/autonomy; AI data centers also use memory, including HBM. | S&P Global Mobility analyst Jeremie Bouchaud said major DRAM makers were directing wafer capacity toward HBM for AI data centers. He assessed automotive DRAM supply in 2026–27 as constrained but responsive to higher prices, and expected DDR4 and LPDDR4 to remain in automotive production through the end of 2027. This is an analyst outlook, not a guaranteed shortage or a measured outcome for every automaker. (S&P Global Mobility, 29 December 2025.) |
| Foundational, high-volume chips | Components such as chips used in vehicle electrical control units. | The 2025 Nexperia disruption showed how a relatively small, widely used component can become a production risk if supply is interrupted and replacement parts need qualification. ACEA said alternative sources existed, but ramping them up could take months. It did not identify AI demand as the cause of that incident. (ACEA, 16 October 2025.) |
| Other automotive semiconductor categories | Vehicles also use controllers and power devices; AI data centers require logic, memory, analog and foundational chips. | Automotive semiconductor demand is growing across categories, but S&P Global Mobility describes bottlenecks as uneven rather than universal. A pressure point in one category should not be treated as proof of a shortage in all the others. (S&P Global Mobility, 2026.) |
How a small component shortage can stop a much larger product
A car needs many different chips to be available together. If a supplier cannot deliver a part used in an electrical control unit, having ample supplies of unrelated chips does not necessarily let a factory finish that vehicle. Substituting another component can require technical validation and automotive qualification, as well as enough production capacity to supply the replacement at scale.
ACEA reported that suppliers were told on 10 October 2025 that Nexperia could no longer guarantee deliveries. In its 16 October statement, the association said stocks were generally expected to last weeks, while qualifying alternatives and ramping up added capacity could take several months. ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries described the risk as extending across suppliers and virtually all members. The episode illustrates a vulnerability in concentrated supply chains; it is separate from the AI-related DRAM pressure and is not evidence that AI caused the Nexperia disruption.
Why cars need more chips even as supply gets tighter
Electrified powertrains, driver-assistance systems and centralized, software-defined vehicle architectures are increasing semiconductor content in vehicles. S&P Global Mobility estimates automotive semiconductor revenue at around $90 billion in 2025 and projects approximately $139 billion by 2031, a 7.5% compound annual growth rate. The same 2026 analysis estimates that electric vehicles average roughly two to two-and-a-half times the semiconductor value of internal-combustion vehicles. These are market estimates and projections, not a count of chips in every car.

More semiconductor value per vehicle means automakers have a larger and more varied set of component requirements to manage. It does not, by itself, establish that production will fall: the outcome also depends on supply, inventory, sourcing choices and qualified substitutes for each component.

The available evidence does not establish that every make, model or market has less inventory, or that a buyer will face a delay. A component constraint can affect allocation, lead times or prices in selected cases; it becomes a vehicle-production problem when the required part cannot be supplied or replaced in time. The risk therefore depends on a specific vehicle’s components and its suppliers’ alternatives, not just on whether it is an EV or uses advanced driver assistance.
- Ask a dealer about the current lead time and availability for the exact trim and configuration you want; broad industry forecasts cannot tell you the inventory at a particular dealership.
- If you can be flexible, ask whether another trim, configuration or delivery location is available sooner. That is a practical way to respond to local inventory differences, not a guarantee that one version is less exposed to chip constraints.
- Before paying a deposit, confirm the expected delivery window, what happens if it changes, and whether the quoted vehicle is allocated or simply estimated. These details are dealer- and contract-specific.
As historical context—not a forecast for this cycle—S&P Global Mobility reported that chip shortages prevented more than 10 million cars from being built in 2021. The current evidence describes more targeted and variable risks; it does not establish a repeat of that disruption.

Why supply cannot adjust overnight
ACEA’s 29 September 2026 summary of an EY analysis says automotive semiconductor dependencies sit within concentrated supply chains that also face demand from AI, data centers, defense and clean energy. Adding alternative sources can require specialized expertise and workers, permits, technical validation and automotive qualification; some of those processes can take years. Even when another supplier exists, it may not have immediate capacity to produce a compatible part in the required volume.

Together, these address both sides of the problem: the ability to add or switch supply, and suppliers’ confidence that investment will have sustained demand.
