Adding graphene reduced friction and wear further. The result makes the coating an interesting candidate for rover components, but it does not show that it is ready for use on Mars: the experiment was a controlled bench test, not a rover trial or flight qualification.
What did the study test?
Researchers S. Huang, K. C. Mutyala, A. V. Sumant, and V. N. Mochalin tested a deposited coating of Ti3C2, a titanium carbide MXene. They also tested a composite coating containing Ti3C2 and graphene. MXenes are two-dimensional materials made from transition-metal carbides or nitrides; in this experiment, graphene was an additive, not a replacement for the MXene.

The team used a ball-on-disc tribometer: a diamond-like-carbon-coated steel ball slid against a silica-coated silicon substrate. Tests were conducted in dry nitrogen. The primary paper reports a friction coefficient of 0.0067 ± 0.0017 for Ti3C2 in that setup, a result the authors describe as superlubricity. The study, published in Materials Today Advances in March 2021, is the basis for the rover connection.

In the same study, adding graphene to the Ti3C2 coating lowered measured friction by 37.3% and reduced wear by a factor of two compared with Ti3C2 alone. The graphene-containing coating retained the reported superlubricity behavior.

| Tested coating | Friction result | Wear result | Reported superlubricity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ti3C2 MXene | 0.0067 ± 0.0017 in dry nitrogen | Baseline for the comparison | Yes |
| Ti3C2 MXene with graphene | 37.3% lower than Ti3C2 alone | Wear lower by a factor of two than Ti3C2 alone | Yes |
These figures describe the coatings in the study’s laboratory configuration. They are not a head-to-head comparison with rover lubricants, oils, or other materials in a wheel assembly.
Why consider it for planetary rovers?
Rovers operate far from routine maintenance, so a failure in a moving part can have serious consequences. Mochalin said the question occurred to him while watching a Mars rover landing: “When I watched the landing of the rover on Mars, I thought: ‘What if the lubricant in one of its wheels fails?’” Chemistry World’s report on the work describes the rover as a possible application motivated by the dry, oxygen-poor environment—not as a use already demonstrated.

- Revell Plastic Model Car Kit #85-4498 is skill level 5 and contains 184 parts. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
- Long Wheelbase Station Wagon, multi-part six-cylinder engine
- Right or left-hand driver versions can be built
- Colored instruction manual and waterslide decals included.
- Parts molded in white, clear, and soft black tires. Paint and glue sold separately.
Low friction and wear resistance are relevant properties for moving hardware, and a coating could be considered where conventional lubrication presents challenges. But a low coefficient in one test does not establish dependable operation in a rover. The study did not report a field test or flight qualification.
What remains unproven for rover use?
The experiment measured sliding between a specified ball and coated test substrate under dry nitrogen. It does not establish service life in a rover wheel, performance under Martian dust or temperature cycling, equivalent contact loads, or survival of launch and landing. Those are separate engineering questions; the reported friction result alone cannot answer them.

Atmosphere and moisture are also important. Chemistry World reports that the tests used dry nitrogen to reduce humidity and that MXenes are reactive and susceptible to hydrolysis and reactions with oxygen. Mochalin discussed protection from wet-air exposure, including graphene, as a possible direction. The graphene-containing test result is promising, but it is not proof that the coating is durable in all handling, storage, or rover conditions.
Does the mechanism explain the low friction?
Not conclusively. Mochalin described several possible explanations involving MXene surface functional groups, intercalated species, and the material itself, while emphasizing that the mechanism was not yet certain: “We hypothesised about a few mechanisms, which can be related to functional groups on MXene surfaces and intercalated species, as well as the nature of the material itself, but at this stage there is little we can say with certainty.”

Materials scientist Yury Gogotsi characterized the finding as another notable MXene property: “MXenes have shown many marvelous properties and brought many surprises in the past decade, and here the authors show the ability to greatly decrease the friction by using two-dimensional flakes of MXene.” His comment is an assessment of the result, not evidence of rover readiness.
Is this the same as other “super-slippery” 2D materials?
No. A separate 2020 study of degraded black phosphorus on silica also used the phrase “super-slippery,” and implicated a mobile water layer. That is a different material interface and experiment; it does not establish the mechanism of the Ti3C2 MXene coating or its suitability for rovers. The black-phosphorus study is indexed by PubMed.
