Where is Halyard’s Castle, and what is proposed?
The proposal is the Cato Data Centre, planned by ILI Cato Limited on farmland at Camilla Farm, north of Camilla Road near Gleniston and northwest of Auchtertool in Fife. APRS describes a proposed 600 MW hyperscale campus with data halls, plant, electricity substations, roads, parking, fencing, gatehouses, drainage and landscaping. APRS says its review of the submitted plans indicates that the proposed development footprint extends across the location of Halyard’s Castle, which it identifies as a historic asset within the site. It also refers to castle ruins among the historic assets that need consideration. Because this is APRS’s interpretation of project plans, it should not be read as a finding by Fife Council or as confirmation that the castle will be removed. Could the castle be destroyed to make way for the data centre?
The available evidence does not establish that Halyard’s Castle is scheduled for demolition or that demolition has been approved. It establishes a narrower point: APRS says the proposed footprint shown in plans it reviewed overlaps the castle’s location. Whether the final layout would directly affect the castle or its ruins cannot be confirmed from that claim alone.

The headline’s “1,000-year-old” description is likewise unverified. The sources available here do not provide an authoritative heritage record establishing the castle’s age, designation or condition. Until such a record and final project drawings are checked, describing it as 1,000 years old or saying it is certain to be destroyed would go beyond what is established.
Has the data centre been approved?
The available sources do not establish the latest status of the planning application or show that permission has been granted. APRS says its report was written before a planning-permission-in-principle application was submitted and was based on environmental-impact-assessment scoping documents. The report therefore cannot settle the application’s current stage or the final site layout.

Separately, APRS reports that Fife Council issued an environmental impact assessment (EIA) screening opinion on April 1, 2026, deciding that an EIA was not required. Screening determines whether a full EIA is required; it is not planning permission, and it does not establish that environmental effects are absent. APRS reports the screening date and outcome.

What environmental and heritage issues have been raised?
APRS identifies Auchtertool Linn Local Wildlife Site, nearby Camilla Loch Site of Special Scientific Interest, Firth of Forth Special Protection Area and Loch Leven Special Protection Area in its discussion of the surrounding environment. It flags issues for consideration including noise, lighting, drainage, habitat connectivity and safeguards for the historic environment. The available material does not provide a complete environmental assessment or establish project-specific figures for water use, emissions, cooling or backup generation. Those details matter when assessing a large data-centre proposal, but they should not be inferred from its stated electricity demand alone.
What does Scotland’s 2026 planning oversight change?
In a Scottish Parliament exchange on September 3, 2026, Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth said a planning direction issued on August 17 required planning authorities to notify ministers within seven days of validating data-centre applications above 50 MW, including applications already in the system. The proposed Cato campus is described by APRS as 600 MW, well above that threshold, but the notification rule is oversight—not an approval, refusal or decision about Halyard’s Castle. Gilruth also said the Scottish Government was considering future planning guidance. A Scottish Parliament motion page records calls for national planning and spatial guidance, environmental standards, consideration of energy emissions and water use, waste-heat reuse and community benefits. Those are positions raised in Parliament, not adopted requirements or a decision on the Cato application. The motion page records those policy calls.

- Final application drawings: These would show whether the layout has changed and how it relates to the reported castle location.
- Planning decision and conditions: These would establish whether permission is granted and what requirements apply to construction and heritage protection.
- An authoritative heritage record: This is needed to confirm the castle’s name, age, designation and condition.
Until those records establish the facts, the defensible conclusion is that a heritage group has reported a potential overlap between the planned footprint and Halyard’s Castle’s location. The reviewed evidence does not confirm demolition, permission or the castle’s claimed age.
